It’s vital to come up with something fresh that’s suited both to you in order to allow you to express who you are as a performer and to the specific purposes of the audition.

In this invaluable collection you’ll find forty speeches by leading contemporary playwrights including Annie Baker, Jez Butterworth, Nadia Fall, Ella Hickson, Arinzé Kene, Dawn King, Jessica Swale, Jack Thorne, Enda Walsh and Tom Wells, from plays that were premiered at many of the UK’s most famous and respected venues, including the National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, Manchester Royal Exchange, Royal Court Theatre, Bush Theatre, Traverse Theatre, the Young Vic, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Drawing on her experience as an actor, director and teacher at several leading drama schools, Trilby James introduces each speech with a user-friendly, bullet-point list of ten things you need to know about the character, and then five ideas to help you perform the monologue.

This book also features a step-by-step guide to the process of selecting and preparing your speech, and approaching the audition itself.

‘Sound practical advice for anyone attending an audition a source of inspiration for teachers and students alike’ Teaching Drama Magazine on The Good Audition Guides

    A NOTE ON THE TITLE

The use of the word ‘Male’ in the title of this monologue collection refers to the characters as originally written, and is not intended to suggest any restriction in terms of usage.

We encourage performers of all gender identities to explore and choose any monologue that they connect with as an individual, and not feel constrained by who it was originally written to be performed by.

  • Shooting the Actor

    03

A companion volume to Being an Actor, Callow’s classic text about the experience of acting in the theatre, Shooting the Actor reveals the truth about film acting. The book describes his film work, from Amadeus to Four Weddings and a Funeral, from Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls to Shakespeare in Love.

Its centrepiece is a hilarious and sometimes agonising account of the making of Manifesto, shot in the former Yugoslavia. When Callow first met the film’s director Dušan Makavejev to discuss the movie, they both got on famously. Months later the two were barely speaking. Insightful and always entertaining, Shooting the Actor reveals more than any formal guide could about the process of film-making and the highly complex nature of being both actor and director.

  • More than an Actor

    06

Well-bred, educated at Eton and the Central School for Speech and Drama in London, the youngest of four boys in an upper-class family, Peter H. was in many ways the embodiment of Englishness, from the way he took his tea to his love of Shakespeare. Encouraged by his wonderful mother, he chose a career in acting and, under the tutelage of Sir Laurence Olivier at the British National Theatre Company, became a stellar performer – a classical actor in the postwar era of gritty realism.

    W. Grey Champion’s narrative, relying on contemporary accounts of people who knew Peter, tells the haunting story of the man himself – beset by misfortune and tragedy, which aggravated mental and physical disorders ending his life too soon. The author withholds Peter’s stage name early on in order to accentuate his vision of a truly superlative person, who was much more than an actor.

A compelling imaginative read that pays tribute to the memory of the venerable Jeremy Brett (Peter Jeremy William Huggins). – Linda Pritchard

  • Erotic Vagrancy: Everything about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor

    08

‘The book of the year’ SUNDAY TIMES
‘One of the very best biographies I have ever read’ STEPHEN FRY
‘A hot thunderstorm of a book’ DAVID HARE
‘Erotic Vagrancy gave me a week of pure joy’ CRAIG BROWN
    ‘Unputdownable’ TONY PALMER
    ‘A genius writer’ LYNN BARBER

Thirteen years in the writing, Erotic Vagrancy doesn’t only surpass every other biography of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton yet to appear, this rich, vital and passionately articulated book, which is as extravagant and wayward as its two subjects, is also about celebrity, creativity, being flawed, being brilliant, sexuality, the intermingling of a low and a highbrow existence, pride, insecurity, attraction and repulsion, and devilry.

We see Taylor the child actress exchanging dogs and horses for husbands. We see Burton emerging from the mists and brimstone of Wales to be the greatest theatrical animal of his generation. The pair come together in Rome during the making of Cleopatra, which gives Lewis the opportunity for a major farcical set-piece. We then enter a world of jewels and private jets, vodka, yachts and furs – the splendid vulgarity of the Sixties, where the narrative of Taylor and Burton becomes a Pop Art story.

Then, inevitably, it all goes wrong, with alcoholism, violence, recrimination and divorce ( twice ) – with Burton, whom Lewis depicts as a Faustus figure, damned by fame, dead at fifty-eight.

Stephen Fry has said, ‘It is one of the very best biographies I have ever read. One of the best books about fame, desire, Hollywood and mid-to-late twentieth century culture ever written. Inside which, brilliant, hilarious and sensitive insights on all manner of subjects fizz and froth. Magnificent, terrible, tragic, triumphant.’

This book focuses on competitive positioning and includes in-depth discussions of the processes used within marketing to achieve competitive advantage in a business environment – by creating and sustaining superior performance in the marketplace. The key approach used in this book is to focus on two central issues in marketing strategy formulation – the identification of target markets, and the creation of a differential advantage. In doing so, it recognises the emergence of potential new target markets born of the recession, increased concern for climate change and disruption from ongoing technological advances. It helps you examine ways in which firms can differentiate offerings through recognition of environmental and social concerns and innovation.

    01

“Bachata!” is the little brother to “Salsa!” and “Rueda!” in the ‘Little Book of Dancing’ series…

It is a brief introduction to the many styles of dancing Bachata, especially the newer Bachata Rueda, which is rapidly gaining in popularity around the world

Reviews of the previous books Salsa! and Rueda! have been excellent!

“Wonderful funny written book. Each page gives you new experience, a hint and a big smile. The most I loved about the book was the humor it was written with, practical advice about salsa and dancing etiquette. Beautiful and easy reading.”

“Fun, easy to read book for salsa lovers and those interested in learning how to dance. I enjoyed the book very much! The author talks about different aspects of dancing, gives lots of good advice to both men and women and eliminates doubts beginners might have. His little anecdotes give the book a personal touch. If you are not a dancer yet, the book will make you want to take up salsa`ing! Great read!”

  • Choreography – craft and vision: Developing and Structuring Dance for Solo, Duet and Groups

    SOFTCOVER SPECIAL Edition KDP

This book offers a comprehensive toolbox of approaches
    to analysing and creating contemporary
    choreography.

Are you ready to deepen your understanding
of the world of dance and the creative
    process of choreography?

In this book about choreography you will learn
how to develop dance and performance.
In order for you to truly enjoy the process of
choreography, I will offer you tools to help you
    enter into a creative flow.
Because ultimately, that’s what it’s all about:
getting into a free flowing joyful process with the
dancers and having plenty of fun along the way,
as you develop a solo, a duet or a group piece for
    the stage or a film.

You will learn how to expand your repertoire and
how to trigger in your dancers, identification and
    connection with your theme.

I will present various ways in which you can
develop and structure your work. Tools with
which you can introduce tension, multiple facets,
variety and powerful dynamics into your dances,
    allowing a dramaturgy to emerge.

You will receive over 120 exercises to inspire you
    for your rehearsals or classes.
You can now preview the entire book online for
free or download a reading sample.
    Take a look.
It will inspire you and your dancing and it will
    improve your choreography.

When it comes to choreography, many
    dancers are initially lost.
Nevertheless, there are people who can’t
dance and still develop great pieces.
Maybe you’re a gifted mover, but that
doesn’t mean that your material works in one
    piece.

Even if your movements are great and
others admire you for how you dance, it can
happen very quickly that the sensation of your
skills wears off very quickly and your movements
seem arbitrary. Especially if you have transferred
them to a group. And you ask yourself in such a
moment: What am I doing wrong? My dancers
are great, my movement material is innovative,
but on stage it all seems interchangeable and it’s
just movement. And you think: This is all
    pointless.

No, that’s not it! It’s about how you deal
with everything. How you connect the dancers
with your ideas and with your material. How you
manage that the dancers make your visions and
your movements theirs. How to get them there
to identify with what moves you. But even that is
    not enough.

You need to know more about how
dramaturgy works in dance. How you build up an
arc of suspense and what that has to do with
space and rhythm. How to create interesting
contrasts and how to deal with music and
    movement.

This book covers all of that. You can open
it anywhere and get inspiration for the rehearsal
or class and expand your thought space. But you
can also focus on certain topics such as music
and movement. You can delve deeper into the
work of thematic development and structuring
    of access development.

In total there are 120 studies and
exercises that you do not have to do one to one.
You can use the exercises as a suggestion and
develop them further in order to get on with
    your dancing and choreography.

  • NYC Ballet Fashion Gala: Choreography & Couture

Celebrating the dual art forms of ballet and fashion, this beautiful book explores the creative collaborations between the New York City Ballet and top fashion designers of our age, including Valentino, Dries Van Noten, and Olivier Theyskens among others. Ballet and fashion have long been intertwined. From its creation in seventeenth-century France, classical ballet adapted elements from high style including the ballerina s corseted bodice, tulle skirt, and pointe shoes. The world of fashion happily reciprocated, incorporating balletic style into day and evening wear, a trend that continues to this day. The interrelationship between these beautiful art forms is exemplified by the New York City Ballet s annual Fall Fashion Gala in which the company s young choreographers collaborate with prominent fashion designers on a newly commissioned ballet. From the first gala in 2012 when renowned choreographers Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon worked with Valentino, up through the present, the performances have become the most glamorous cultural event of the season with the biggest names in fashion bringing their artistic vision to a never-seen-before ballet. With stunning photography, this book features incredible images of the dancers in motion, with details highlighting their couture costumes. Richly illustrated, with the designers costume sketches complementing the photography, the book also features interviews between the dancers, choreographers and designers, as well as essays by noted fashion writers, illuminating the dynamic process of design and dance.

  • Love, Dance and Ecstasy

Dionysos is the Greek god of the grape-harvest and winemaking, of the growth and fertility of vegetation – especially orchards and vineyards – and, lastly, of insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre. Because of his links to plant growth, he also became associated with death, resurrection and regeneration. He was also known as Bákkhos to the Greeks, a name adopted by the Romans as Bacchus. The focus here is on the links between Dionysos’ cult and the perennial human preoccupations of drugs, sex and ecstasy.
