Confessions of an Actor: The Autobiography
Laurence Olivier was a true legend. No classical actor had ever been such a dazzling star. No star had been such a magnificent actor. In this marvellous autobiography Laurence Olivier tells his own story: his brilliant career as actor, director, film-maker and producer; his role as husband to three women including Vivien Leigh and Joan Plowright; and his many friendships – with Sir Ralph Richardson, Noel Coward and Sir Winston Churchill, to name just a few. CONFESSIONS OF AN ACTOR is more than just a memoir. It is a deeply felt testament by one of the most astonishingly gifted artists of all time.Read more

Your Dog Ate My Shoe: Etudes For Young Actors Op. 1
This is the first book in the series of short one to three-minute exercises for young actors. This first volume contains one hundred eleven scenes of different levels of difficulty for actors as young as six years old to late teens and young adults.
Each generation deserves its own voice. Therefore, in contrast to other acting books written for teens by adults, this book was written by their peer.
Each scene is provided with a b-code that describes for what age range and gender identification it is suitable to be performed. Scenes were constructed in a way that it would be easy for the young actor to perform them with their acting coach, parent or colleague.
All scenes are formatted according to the standard script formatting guidelines.
The paper version of this book is intentionally printed on non-glossy paper and is meant to be scribbled on. Please make it your own, take it with you to your acting lesson, and put your thoughts and findings in pencil or ink.
Please note that this book is published not-for-profit the collection is provided in electronic form to patrons so they can support the website https://www.bcacting.com.
At the time of publishing (October 2023) All of scenes in this book can be downloaded for free from the official website https://www.bcacting.com where they were originally published between April and September 2023.
“Your Dog Ate My Shoe” is a citation from one of the very first scenes written for this book. The subtitle of the book “Etudes For Young Actors Op. 1” is inspired by music books, étude in French means an exercise, and opus is a collection of works. As actors use their bodies as an instrument to perform truthful emotions, there’s no better subtitle that I could imagine.

Being an Actor
When it was first published in 1984, this book exposed the pressures, rewards and insecurity of an actor’s life, and caused a storm of controversy for its forthright views on the shortcomings of contemporary directors. Ten years later, Simon Callow has provided a new and gloomy assessment of the state of British theatre today, with the decline of ensemble playing, a lack of training for young actors, “brochure theatre” where novelty replaces substance, and audiences who applaud the hydraulics of the stage machinery rather than the quality of the actor’s performace. It ends with a warning that without attention to the roots of the art of stagecraft, the tree of British theatre will surely die.Read more

I, an Actor by Nicholas Craig: Another Great Actor Explores Himself
At last the memoirs of Nicholas Craig – theatrical eminence best known for his Truepate in The Cuckolde of Leicester and more popularly as Gob in Oh No! It’s the Neighbours! – are re-released for a grateful audience, updated with a wealth of new and controversial material. Startlingly truthful, unflinchingly illustrated, I, An Actor is a piton up the slope of creativity for theatre fans and aspiring actors alike, revealing everything that most theatrical autobiographies cravenly avoid. Should you sport a moustache in your publicity photo? How can you fix a prolapsed labial or a bad case of ‘blow-out’? What should you never call Alec Guinness during rehearsals? Is it true Brian Blessed only weighs 9 1/2 stone? And what should you do when Hollywood comes calling? This book blows the lid off the secrets of the profession, leaving no reputation safe.Read more

Trusting the Actor: New Techniques for Actor Training
This revolutionary book is more than just a dry theoretical study of acting techniques. Against a background of Apartheid South Africa it tells the story – both humorous and moving – of how teacher/director Brian Astbury – founder of South Africa’s legendary Space Theatre – and hundreds of actors and acting students both in production and at Britain’s top drama schools developed a set of exercises over two decades to help actors overcome problems not addressed in other methods.These teach how to be ‘in the moment’;
to gain access to the inexhaustible storehouse of the imagination;
to access, integrate and properly use the emotions of the character;
to overcome difficulties with learning lines;
to recreate performance without conscious thought.“An idiosyncratic, challenging and practical guide to the craft of acting, crammed with anecdotes and humorous insights”
Richard E. Grant Actor/director/writer (Withnail and I, The Player, Wah-Wah and many others)“A truly inspirational teacher”
Julie Hesmondhalgh Actor (Hayley, Coronation Street)“A unique figure in British theatre. Provocative, controversial, doggedly inspiring. He has been the pivotal teacher, enabler and mentor for me and countless others.
Rufus Norris Director (Festen, Cabaret, Market Boy, Tintin, Vernon God Little, Blood Wedding)“I cannot recommend it highly enough”
Stephen Moyer Actor (True Blood, NY-LON, Prince Valiant, the RSC)“A conversational (almost chatty) love story, a tale of a theatre company’s struggle against Apartheid, an irreverent look at life”
Alexander Siddig Actor/director (Deep Space Nine, Syriana, Un Homme Perdu, 24, Primeval, Hannibal)“Brian Astbury was, without a doubt, the biggest influence on me. His teachings are still what I go to in trouble”
Jason Flemyng Actor (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Quatermass Experiment, Drum, the RSC)Read more

Games for Actors and Non-Actors
The French edition of Jeux pour Acteurs et Non-Acteurs published in 1982 is currently in its seventh edition. For this first translation into English Boal has added new examples and fresh ideas to make it the most up-to-date introduction to the techniques of Image Theatre and Forum Theatre available.
Boal’s early work took place under the military regime in Brazil. During a period of exile in Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, and the US he developed work on combating oppression through theatre. His methods transform theatre from a hierarchical structure where actors are active and audiences passive, to a democratic arena where the spectator becomes the `spectactor’, contributing ideas, taking over roles, and using theatre to confront everyday problems, such as sexual harassment, poor pay, homophobia, and racism and find ways of fighting them.
Games for Actors and Non-Actors is a handbook of methods, techniques, games, and exercises designed to help anyone – whether actor or non-actor – rehearse for real life: make the fictional real.Read more

Acting: Face to Face 2nd Edition: The Actor’s Guide to Understanding How Your Face Communicates Emotion for TV and Film (Language of the Face Book 1)
Master your facial expressions…
… complete your on-camera training…
…. change your life.
Contrary to popular belief, the camera doesn’t magically place emotion or thought on your face – YOU do.
Here’s the thing about facial communication… your face speaks an emotional, cognitive and emblematic language. Knowing how to speak this language fluently and authentically is a skill and often the difference between booking the on-camera job or not.
Is this you?
- Are you often told your facial expressions are too big, too small, too messy?
- Does your face frequently fail to represent what you’re really feeling inside?
- Do your headshots fail to capture who you really are?
- Is your face uncontrollable – Can’t stop it from moving? Can’t get it to move?
- Are you unable to figure out how to get what you feel and think on your face the way you intend?
Mastering how your face speaks to the camera starts here.
Acting: Face-to-Face, the Actor’s Guide to Understanding How Your Face Communicates Emotion for TV & Film is the first book in a two-book series about speaking what I call, “The Language of the Face.”
Our journey begins with-
- Why only a small percentage of on-camera actors get the majority of the work
- What those actors do differently than the rest
- Why acting is an art of deception and why deception is the key to truthful acting
- Why your facial messages may not be expressed the way we intend.
Then we’ll take a deep dive into-
- The science of emotions –
- The 3 ways emotions are facially expressed
- How to identify your personal emotion creating and revealing strengths and weaknesses
- The 4 steps to achieving “Emotional Alignment”- The balance between what you feel and what your face reveals.
What’s new in the expanded 2nd edition?
- Updated “Myths and Misconceptions.” chapter.
- What we’ve learned from mask-wearing.
- Deeper dive into EYE COMMUNICATION – what the eyes can and can’t say.
- 35 new photos to illustrate specificity and subtlety of emotional expression.
Also added are 3 brand NEW chapters including a mini version of the proprietary Emotion Screen Test (EST).
The EST is a guided in-depth self-evaluation of your own facial expressions. Its main purpose is to help you clearly evaluate your emotion creating and revealing strengths and weaknesses.
Are ready to finally complete your on-camera training?
I’m pretty certain you’ll love this comprehensive book on facial communication because it’s easy to follow and the information you’ll take away may not only game-changing, it may very well be life-changing.
Let the journey begin…

The English Actor: From Medieval to Modern
The English Actor charts the uniquely English approach to stagecraft. In thirty chapters, Peter Ackroyd describes, with superb narrative skill, the genesis of acting – deriving from the Church tradition of Mystery Plays – through the flourishing of the craft in the Renaissance to modern methods that followed the advent of film and television. The biographies of the most notable and celebrated actors are also explored, right up to the present day. In this book, Ackroyd gives us an original and superbly entertaining appraisal of how actors have acted – and how audiences have responded – since the medieval period, and what we mean by the ‘magic of the stage’.Read more

The Actors’ Crucible: Port Talbot and the Making of Burton, Hopkins, Sheen and All the Others
The town of Port Talbot has long been seen (quite literally) as synonymous with the steel industry. Yet it also has another claim to fame as the actorsx27 capital of Wales. It has produced a remarkable number of actors since the inter-war years. Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen head the glittering cast but there are many others including early stars such as Ronald Lewis and Ivor Emmanuel, more recent figures like Rob Brydon and Di Botcher as well as a cluster of exciting young actorsstarting to make their names in the West End and on the big and small screen.This book suggests explanations for this phenomenon. Its author is a historical biographer who hails from Port Talbot and has done extensive research including numerous interviews. It explores the provision of educational and cultural facilities for young people over the years and demonstrates a commitment to drama that is deeply embedded in the townx27s history. It tells in some depth the stories of the super-stars but in a novel way, focusing on how they emerged and on those who nurtured their talent, presenting the actors as part of a tradition that was set in motion even before Richard Burton began to make his mark. It surveys the careers of fifty actors from Port Talbot and it considers what its most famous stars have put back into their community, culminating in the spectacular three-day event of Easter 2011 when Michael Sheen resurrected Port Talbotx27s pride and hopes through the immersive theatrical experience of The Passion.Written at a time of mixed fortunes for actors when funding for training is threatened yet opportunities for theatre and film work are expanding within Wales, this book puts centre-stage a town, its actors and those who guide them and so offers a new kind of cultural history. Such an approach also raises wider questions about the importance of the arts and of drama in particular to the wellbeing of communities.Read more

It features outrageous tales from his own life and career as well as those told to him by a host of stars and filmmakers, including Tony Curtis, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, David Niven, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, John Mills, Peter Sellers, Michael Winner, Cubby Broccoli and many more.

Hollywood or Home
Kathryn Gray’s long-awaited second collection Hollywood or Home, has as much ruthless glamour as any old Hollywood movie. These worldly-wise poems are seriously playful and playfully serious as they explore celebrity culture. Spectres of Hollywood – moguls, politicians, starlets, and monsters – leap from screen to page. Common tropes are observed, and industry secrets revealed.
In decadent celebrity culture, where a star is born every minute and becomes a flop even more quickly, these fierce and funny poems open space for the writer to reassess failures and successes, to overcome writer’s block, and to remember that we never stop longing for our old dreams to come true. Writing at the top of her game, Gray manages to find spectacle – and survival – out of Hollywood’s brutal disdain for failure.
