THE GO TO MARKET HANDBOOK FOR B2B SaaS LEADERS: HOW TO STACK THE ODDS IN YOUR FAVOUR WHEN SCALING YOUR SOFTWARE BUSINESS
There are few people we admire more than the Founders and Leaders of software companies who have the courage, determination and, some might say, sheer madness to put their livelihoods and reputation on the line, to leave their own ‘dent in the universe’. It’s a day to day, up at dawn, pride swallowing siege to lead such a business. And we know this for a fact because we’ve walked in your shoes many times.Over the last 25 years, we’ve been involved in the start-up, scale up and exit of several successful technology businesses, that between them have realized close to billion dollars of shareholder value. But along the way we’ve also had more than our fair share of disappointments and have the mental scars and bruising to prove it. We’ve made mistakes and fallen in what felt like bottomless pits. But fascinatingly enough, we learned as much from the ones that didn’t work, as we did from the successes. It’s these lessons which we thought we’d share in this book.
So, who is this book for? We think there are three use cases here, so let’s expand.
Firstly, you could be a Founder who has raised seed money or achieved a Series A and who set off like a rocket in the early years, conquering all before them. But something has happened.
For some reason the business is not growing as fast as you’d once hoped. Without perhaps knowing why, sales have started to slow, and some air has come out of the tyres amongst key stakeholders. Renewals are harder to achieve, once automatically accepted upsells are being rejected and pricing is being squeezed. There’s a sense that the business needs a re-set and perhaps fresh ideas, and energy are needed to get the team back to smashing targets
What we’ve learned is that if things have started to slow, especially from a sales point of view, it’s generally down to one of two things. Either the core value proposition has become lost somewhere in the heat of battle and has shifted with or without your knowledge. Or the sales team have lost their way and need some fresh inspiration. We’ll address both these issues (and many more) in this book. Sometimes it’s a combination of both, sometimes it’s something different, but these are two most common reasons we’ve found. If this is you, we hope this book will provide some fresh inspiration.
The second use case would be a Technical Founder who has created some brilliant software but is unsure about how to go to market. Without trying to sound too like Liam Neeson, creating a highly effective sales and marketing plan requires a particular set of skills and experience.
You might well be thinking it’s time to invest in an expensive sales team, and that might be the right answer. But before you do that, it might be worth reading this book because it contains a set of workbooks that will significantly stack the odds in your favour of gaining repeatable sales traction.
Finally, this book is for Founders who are starting out on the SaaS journey and thinking about where to begin. You’ve come up with a great idea on how you might change the world for the better, but before you go all in, feel like you’d like to understand the Go to Market process more.
This book is made up of ten workbooks which we recommend you follow sequentially and take time at the end of each chapter to reflect and then take action. We’ll teach you how to prepare your pain statement and then test it on personas within your target market. We’ll discuss how to uncover your perfect customer and what an Economic Buyer looks like. We’ll build Market Maps and debate the best ways you can become famous in your chosen field. We’ll look at Product Messaging, packaging, and pricing and at the very end we’ll show you how to put together an exciting Investor Proposition for when you need to raise capital. At its heart, this book is a Go to Market Handbook for SaaS Leaders because there’s nothing more important than hitting your sales targets.

Smart Startups: What Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know–Advice from 18 Harvard Business School Founders
Two startup company founders and angel investors go inside eighteen companies founded by Harvard Business School graduates, uncovering surprising lessons for success and unexpected pitfalls essential for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Conventional “wisdom” holds that the most successful entrepreneurs in the world are born with a genius for starting companies, experience one lightning-bolt moment of inspiration after another, follow a tried-and-true process to scale to a billion dollars, and attract deep-pocketed investors at every turn.
The real story is a bit more unconventional—and much more interesting.
Would-be-entrepreneurs Catalina Daniels and James Sherman, hungry to study and apply the best practices of startups to their own ventures, studied the nuts-and-bolts of entrepreneurship as classmates at Harvard Business School. Years later, after successfully founding and exiting several companies, and as angel investors in start-ups, they were surprised to realize that their experiences greatly differed from what they had been taught in school. HBS provided a world-class education in the basics. But there was so much they learned the hard way—working in the trenches—that, looking back, they wished they’d known before starting up.
Inspired, Daniels and Sherman interviewed eighteen HBS graduates and entrepreneurs about their experiences founding companies such as Blue Apron, Rent the Runway, Gilt, and AdoreMe, probing them about what they discovered along the way and what they wish they had known beforehand. The authors bring these insights to life by showcasing the founders in their own words and giving readers the experience of chatting with these remarkable entrepreneurs over a cup of coffee No other book has unearthed advice from so many HBS entrepreneurs. The result is wisdom that challenges assumptions, destroys preconceived notions, crystalizes hunches, and articulates perceptions with a depth possessed by few people in the world.
Starting a business is hard. Seventy percent of startups today fail after their seed round, and less than ten percent achieve success for founders and investors. Faced with such a daunting threshold, aspiring entrepreneurs need all the advice, wisdom, and inspiration they can get. Smart Startups is written for them—a timeless record of essential knowledge that can help them avoid failure and achieve success.

The Art of Consultancy: A Powerful Toolkit to Becoming a Top Consultant
This is the practical approach I wish I had come across much earlier in my career. Cynthia Pexton-ShawWhether you are just starting out, considering or already working as a consultant this book is essential reading, enabling you to understand the needs of your client and to get the result they want.
There are more factors to consider in order to be a successful management consultant than simply subject matter knowledge. Problem solving and solution delivery have to be accomplished in usually tight project timescales while keeping clients happy. This book, based on the experience of training thousands of consultants, provides insights into the key processes of selling and delivering consulting services, together with the essential underpinning tools and techniques, and the commercial imperatives for running a successful consulting practice.
This book contains the tools, tactics, secrets and attributes to develop and become a successful management consultant. The contents include chapters on the key processes such as:
- The business of consultancy
- Marketing and selling consultancy projects
- Overview of the delivery process
- Entry, Contracting, Diagnosis, Intervention and Closure
And the essential underpinning skills such as:
- Analytical tools and techniques
- Reporting and Influencing clients
- Designing, delivering training sessions and workshops
- The practice environment
‘This is the practical approach I wish I had come across much earlier in my career. Calvert provides a strong guiding framework for delivering consultancy projects from beginning to end. His writing makes consulting easily accessible for anyone who wishes to deliver their particular expertise into a client organisation.’ Cynthia Pexton-Shaw, Elevation Learning
‘A book that gets to multiple editions is clearly a classic of its sector. Calvert’s is in its seventh and will probably go on to many more. It achieves a threefold feat: of being useful to the expert and to the recently qualified and to the student. Even those of us who have spent decades in this profession need a consultancy bible to refer to. Calvert shows how to be rigorous and systematic, but the book is packed with practical advice from one who is both an academic expert and a senior practising consultant. This is both The Art and The Science of Consultancy.’ Ian Watson – Immediate Past Chair ICMCI
‘This book explains in plain English the role and daily challenges of life as a management consultant, and has been an excellent source of reference in building our business. Calvert presents a practitioners view covering the requisite soft skills as well as the mechanics of solving the client’s business problems.’ Martyn Evans, Consulting Director, Altus

The Strategy Book: How to think and act strategically to deliver outstanding results
“This book will help readers tackle the really important challenges they face both in developing strategies and putting them into action” Consulting Magazine
Strategy is about shaping the future. Thinking strategically is what separates good managers and great leaders. Learn the fundamentals about how to create winning strategy and lead your team to deliver it. From understanding what strategy can do for you, through to creating a strategy and engaging others with strategy, this book offers practical guidance and expert tips. It is peppered with punchy, memorable examples from real leaders winning (and losing) with real world strategies.
Strategy is simple, but simple is complex. The Third Edition includes updated examples and a new set of practical future-focused tools including the Quick Strategy Canvas and the Big Picture. These will help any manager, regardless of experience, to better develop their inner strategic potential for outstanding results in our ever changing world.
People who wanted to shape the future have created our present. With over 7 billion fellow humans sharing our planet, things are not going to slow down or get simpler. At the heart of strategy is the mind of the individual strategist, and by nurturing your ability to see the big picture you can get better at adapting successfully. You can get better at shaping events to get to somewhere better. Using available means to desirable ends.
Expectations keep shifting, new competitors keep appearing, rules change and then change again, technologies disrupt and then politics shake up the nature of the landscape in which you compete, work and live. Being more strategic is about our-thinking both competitors and limitations.
Strategy is not a solo sport. The Strategy Book focuses on how you can create powerful strategies with other people to deliver success together in a competitive world. It answers the following questions:
· What do we know about strategy?
· What can creative strategy do for you?
· How can you create winning strategies?
· How to think and act strategically?
· How can you engage people with strategy?
· How do you avoid pitfalls and screw-ups?
It can be read as a whole or you can dip into the easy-to-read, bite-size sections as and when you need to deal with a particular issue. The structure has been specially designed to make sections quick and easy to use – you’ll find yourself referring to them again and again.

Clever Security Clever Business: Using a Security Management System to enhance security, unlock business opportunities and boost cost-efficiency
Enhance security. Unlock business opportunities. Boost cost-efficiency.
Terrorists and other criminals are constantly probing the cyber and physical defences of businesses, testing the robustness of the security measures and the alertness and resolve of the people. These are real risks yet the response is often questionable. Businesses adopt security measures that provide uncertain levels of protection and place a drag on business opportunities in return for what seems an unfathomably big budget.
Underlying the unease about the security measures and budget is the ill-informed security culture of “It will never happen here….”.
If only there was a better way….
If only there was a way to understand the magnitude of the security risks, what security measures were appropriate, and what the security budget should actually be.
If only there was a way to coordinate physical, cyber and personnel security.
If only there was a way to align security to business goals, enabling progress rather than restricting it.
If only there was a way to assure the business that it was adequately protected and there would be no unwelcome surprises.….There is, and it’s easier than the “carry on as you are” option
Clever Security, Clever Business reveals the secrets for blending agile security with informed business management to deploy security where and when it’s needed. It shows how a Security Management System – a SeMS – can equip security and business managers with the tools to keep security in proportion with the right budget for the right security measures.
Properly executed, a SeMS is an enabler of business success, opening doors to new business opportunities by providing the certainty needed to make confident business decisions – and doing so cost-efficiently.
But you can’t buy a SeMS off the shelf that will support the goals and harness the idiosyncrasies of your business, you have to grow one organically. Based on the experience of successful SeMS projects, Clever Security, Clever Business shows you how to build a practical corporate security management solution and develop healthy security behaviours using proven business processes and methods.“Very thought provoking and a must read for any CEO and Head of Security”
Billy Hann, CEO, Dublin Bus“Engaging, thought-provoking, a very approachable and practical explanation of security management”

Collective Intelligence: How to build a business that’s smarter than you
“Sundberg and Begg have produced an essential guide to help leaders tap their organization’s full potential by creating the conditions for critical thinking, clear communication, and nimble execution.”
Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Power of Regret, Drive, and To Sell is Human
Businesses need to be smart to succeed, but it’s not enough to make yourself smarter as the leader or to fill the company with smart people. Businesses full of smart people (and led by them) make stupid decisions all the time. Instead, in today’s rapidly changing, uncertain world you need to design your business itself to be intelligent, to harness the collective abilities of its people by systematically addressing critical thinking, communication and focus.
The real lesson from Amazon, Google and the like – that enables them to keep winning year after year – is that they do business intelligently. Business is complex, which is why it requires a deep, practical intelligence to survive, let alone thrive. This book shows why businesses that act smartest, and display an organizational capacity for critical thinking, underpinned with clear and effective communication, allowing them to develop razor-sharp focus, are the ones that really stand out and achieve sustained success.
