Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory (Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies)
Reassembling the Social is a fundamental challenge from one of the world’s leading social theorists to how we understand society and the “social”. Bruno Latour’s contention is that the word “social” as used by Social Scientists has become laden with assumptions to the point where it has become a misnomer. When the adjective is applied to a phenomenon, it is used to indicate a stabilized state of affairs, a bundle of ties that in due course may be used to account for another phenomenon. Latour also finds the word used as if it described a type of material, in a comparable way to an adjective such as “wooden” or “steely”.Rather than simply indicating what is already assembled together, it is now used in a way that makes assumptions about the nature of what is assembled. It has become a word that designates two distinct things: a process of assembling: and a type of material, distinct from others. Latour shows why “the social” cannot be thought of as a kind of material or domain, and disputes attempts to provide a “social explanation” of other states of affairs. While these attempts have been productive (and probably necessary) in the past, the very success of the social sciences mean that they are largely no longer so. At the present stage it is no longer possible to inspect the precise constituents entering the social domain. Latour returns to the original meaning of “the social” to redefine the notion and allow it to trace connections again. It will then be possible to resume the traditional goal of the social sciences, but using more refined tools. Drawing on his extensive work examining the “assemblages” of nature, Latour finds it necessary to scrutinize thoroughly the exact content of what is assembled under the umbrella of Society.

The Reason Everything Happens: Mental Health Without The Bulls**t
I’m not a doctor, a psychologist or a psychiatrist and this isn’t an academic work.
These are just the thoughts of someone who got stuck in the mental health quagmire, who chose to find their own way back to dry land and how now tries to help others get trapped up to their necks.
In doing this, I use three key words:
Responsibility. Consequences. Accountability.
A stronger mind starts with us taking responsibility for everything we do and say.
We then need to understand the potential consequences of these words and actions.
And we need to be accountable to ourselves, to stick to the plan of who and what we want to be.
There’s no question these days that it’s too easy to blame others for how we’re feeling, to feign outrage or claim to be triggered. We’re encouraged to lash out, to look for scapegoats.
This isn’t a healthy way to be, not for us or for anyone around us, which is why The Reason Everything Happens encourages us to accept – even embrace – our own failings and weaknesses as well as our successes and strengths. It invites us to try to understand why other are the way they are, rather than isolating them because of it.
Because if every did this…well, the logic is that no one would be scapegoating anyone else, no one would be lashing out.
That’s a huge wish on my part, of course. But even if this book encourages one person to choose a new way of thinking, to accept responsibility and understand consequences, to be accountable, then it will have been worth writing.
Oh, and it also tells you how to cook the perfect Beef Wellington.Read more

Cognitive Biases Mastery – 2 Books In 1: How To Outsmart Mental Pitfalls And Make Smarter Choices To Elevate Work Performance (Decision Making Mastery)
Your subconscious is working against you – a simple tweak to your thought process can fix that.
We’re all biased.
You may have read the above and already your mind is raising its defenses. No… I don’t have a biased bone in my body.
The fact is: you do. So does everyone around you.
Scientific studies, in fact, suggest that certain forms of bias may be hardwired into the human psyche.
For instance, Professor Stephen Neuberg published research in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2005, showing that we evolved as a species to quickly assess dangers posed by those outside our group for survival.
The ability to process information rapidly was a life-or-death evolutionary advantage to our ancestors in their hostile environment.
As our environmental landscape changed, we still needed to process information with speed, but the decisions became increasingly nuanced.
The swift system that evolved to identify and mitigate threats in hunter-gatherer societies became faulty, resulting in several cognitive biases everyone harbors.
Cognitive biases – or mental shortcuts – help you sift through the massive volumes of information available at each given time.
One comes to appreciate this thought process when confronted with the fact that, according to Professor Timothy Wilson from the University of Virginia, we face about 11,000,000 pieces of information simultaneously.
However, these mental shortcuts can lead to irrational, false, or even harmful conclusions.
For example, an HR manager – overestimating their understanding of a subject – could neglect to consult knowledge specialists during their hunt for new tech solutions.
This could lead to a loss of crucial time required for operational tasks.
Worse, this decision could lead to losing company money on ineffective tech solutions.
Such cognitive processes can consequently prove detrimental to your professional and personal life.
But wait – you didn’t think we’d leave you without good news, did you?
All the techniques that give you control over subconscious cognitive activities are within your reach.
This book bundle will help you to identify and correct the cognitive biases you fall prey to in your everyday life.
This book bundle includes:
- Cognitive Biases In A Nutshell: How To Spot And Stop The Hiccups In Our Thinking Process
- Lay Off Your Cognitive Biases: How To Identify Them And Ways To Prevent Disastrous Mistakes And Missed Opportunities At Work
Here’s just a fraction of what you’ll discover inside:
- How wanting something to be true influences you to “find” evidence that it is and how to avoid this
- Elon Musk’s secret behind professional and personal growth
- The 5 ways your ego tricks you into thinking you know more than you do
- How bias exists along a scale and where yours falls on it
- What are the Halo and the Horn effects and how you can reduce their impact on your decisions
- Why this crucial mistake could cost you your job and land you at the “Peak of Mount Stupid” (And 6 strategies to help you overcome it)
- These 6 thought-provoking questions can eliminate any unconscious cognitive biases at play during your decision-making process
…and much, much more.
We’re not telling you we have a magic potion to eliminate your cognitive biases completely, but we sure do have a recipe filled with strategies you can eventually turn into habits.
This book bundle will set you apart because you will know what they are and how to steer clear of the traps they set for your reasoning.

Safety Performance Reimagined: A 4D Approach to Organizational Performance
This book reimagines how safety performance is done. The two authors share case studies and stories from decades of experience working with companies globally to create sustainable safety performance in high-risk operations. It takes a practitioner’s approach to translate academic theory into practical steps that can be used from the boardroom to the frontline.
Safety is ultimately about people. Safety Performance Reimagined identifies the need for a sociotechnical approach and introduces the concept of 4-Dimensional Safety which successfully navigates the complex interplay between people, technology, systems, the structures, and the markets they operate in.
How do leaders and the people conducting operations in complex environments create resilient, safe, and sustainable performance?
The conventional approach fails to equip organizations to handle the complex interplay between people and technology in workplaces. Safety Differently, Safety-II, and HOP have all contributed to answering the “what’s missing” question. They address the Why and the What of the New View of safety, but there is one more piece that needs more exploration—the How.
This book provides proven practical solutions and outlines ‘How’ organizations can achieve sustainable safety performance.Read more

Safety-I and Safety-II: The Past and Future of Safety Management
Safety has traditionally been defined as a condition where the number of adverse outcomes was as low as possible (Safety-I). From a Safety-I perspective, the purpose of safety management is to make sure that the number of accidents and incidents is kept as low as possible, or as low as is reasonably practicable. This means that safety management must start from the manifestations of the absence of safety and that – paradoxically – safety is measured by counting the number of cases where it fails rather than by the number of cases where it succeeds. This unavoidably leads to a reactive approach based on responding to what goes wrong or what is identified as a risk – as something that could go wrong. Focusing on what goes right, rather than on what goes wrong, changes the definition of safety from ‘avoiding that something goes wrong’ to ‘ensuring that everything goes right’. More precisely, Safety-II is the ability to succeed under varying conditions, so that the number of intended and acceptable outcomes is as high as possible. From a Safety-II perspective, the purpose of safety management is to ensure that as much as possible goes right, in the sense that everyday work achieves its objectives. This means that safety is managed by what it achieves (successes, things that go right), and that likewise it is measured by counting the number of cases where things go right. In order to do this, safety management cannot only be reactive, it must also be proactive. But it must be proactive with regard to how actions succeed, to everyday acceptable performance, rather than with regard to how they can fail, as traditional risk analysis does. This book analyses and explains the principles behind both approaches and uses this to consider the past and future of safety management practices. The analysis makes use of common examples and cases from domains such as aviation, nuclear power production, process management and health care. The final chapters explain the theoretical and practical consequences of the new perspective on the level of day-to-day operations as well as on the level of strategic management (safety culture). Safety-I and Safety-II is written for all professionals responsible for their organisation’s safety, from strategic planning on the executive level to day-to-day operations in the field. It presents the detailed and tested arguments for a transformation from protective to productive safety management.Read more

The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth
Conquer the most essential adaptation to the knowledge economy
The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth offers practical guidance for teams and organizations who are serious about success in the modern economy. With so much riding on innovation, creativity, and spark, it is essential to attract and retain quality talent―but what good does this talent do if no one is able to speak their mind? The traditional culture of “fitting in” and “going along” spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule or intimidate. Not every idea is good, and yes there are stupid questions, and yes dissent can slow things down, but talking through these things is an essential part of the creative process. People must be allowed to voice half-finished thoughts, ask questions from left field, and brainstorm out loud; it creates a culture in which a minor flub or momentary lapse is no big deal, and where actual mistakes are owned and corrected, and where the next left-field idea could be the next big thing.
This book explores this culture of psychological safety, and provides a blueprint for bringing it to life. The road is sometimes bumpy, but succinct and informative scenario-based explanations provide a clear path forward to constant learning and healthy innovation.
- Explore the link between psychological safety and high performance
- Create a culture where it’s “safe” to express ideas, ask questions, and admit mistakes
- Nurture the level of engagement and candor required in today’s knowledge economy
- Follow a step-by-step framework for establishing psychological safety in your team or organization
Shed the “yes-men” approach and step into real performance. Fertilize creativity, clarify goals, achieve accountability, redefine leadership, and much more. The Fearless Organization helps you bring about this most critical transformation.

Psychological Safety: The key to happy, high-performing people and teams
Both scientific and industry research suggest that paying close attention to psychological safety has tangible benefits, not just to personal health and well-being, but to workplace productivity and performance. In 2015 Google released the findings of some compelling research known as “The Aristotle Project”. In its quest to build the perfect team, Google assessed the factors common to their high-performing teams. They were shocked to find it was not the background, the experience, or the education of the team members that determined the team’s success, but whether psychological safety was present within the team. Most of us understand the importance of physical safety. We protect ourselves and those around us, and know what physical interactions are socially acceptable, helpful, or harmful.Psychological safety, however, is a new frontier. Only now are we beginning to understand its importance and impact, thanks to recent advancements in neuroscience. For example, research shows that a “hit” to our psychological safety can have a deeper and longer-lasting impact than a “hit” to our physical selves. In fact, social rejection has the same impact on the brain as a punch to the face. Over time, the pain associated with a physical attack is difficult or impossible to recall. The memory of social rejection, however, even many years after the fact, can elicit the same strength of emotion as it did at the time of the event. When we experience an attack to our psychological safety, our brain is triggered into a stress response. Our cognitive abilities are compromised. Our higher, logical brain, the one responsible for thinking, creativity, decision-making, and self-control, goes off-line. In this derailed stress state we can find it difficult to concentrate, make decisions, or control our emotions. In a psychologically safe climate, people are not afraid to express themselves; they feel accepted and respected. This openness creates a fertile environment for thinking, creativity, innovation, and growth, and leads to more collaborative relationships and an overall improvement in individual and team productivity. So how do you identify and manage the triggers that threaten your psychological safety and hijack your brain?Based on the latest neuroscience research, the S.A.F.E.T.Y.™ model describes some of the most important social motivators of human behavior.Learn how to implement it in your life and your workplace, to reap the benefits of increased productivity and personal well-being. This revolutionary book offers actionable solutions to key questions that may be holding you (and your team) back from fulfilling your potential:● Why am I so anxious and stressed?● Why do I continue to do things I don’t want to do?● Why do I care so much about what others think of me?● Why do I self-sabotage?And the most vital question of all:● Why can’t I change?Read more

Putting a modern spin on some childhood stories, Safety Fables for Today introduces Zac and the Beanstalk, cautioning against dropped objects and falls from height; a Perilous Porridge Pot, overflowing with oats and useful insights on preventing loss of containment; a Super-Sized Swede presenting big manual handling challenges, and updated versions of many other familiar tales too.
In embarking upon this journey, Laura J Cahill draws on the power of storytelling, helped by a liberal sprinkling of fairy dust and the company of some fictional folk along the way, providing fresh thought for those seeking to properly manage their activities, and a gentle bedtime read for anyone else with a passing interest in the field of health and safety.
Needless to say, there’s more to these tales and their characters than first meets the eye – not least because of the insights they offer to organisations seeking to control real-world risks, reinvigorate health and safety agendas, and secure happy endings of their own. Through understanding the messages conveyed by these fictional players and addressing these within their own workplace settings, readers can play their part in ensuring that beyond simply living happily, workers remain injury-free, enjoy good health, and live safely ever after too.

Why Deals Fail and How to Rescue Them: M&A lessons for business success
Mergers and acquisitions are part of the fabric of business and economic life: they help drive growth in companies of all sizes. Most executives will at some point in their careers experience a takeover, as buyer, seller or intermediary. Yet, despite M&A’s obvious attractions, deals often fall short of expectations and, in extreme cases, can go disastrously wrong, with devastating consequences.
From their unique perspective as practitioners and researchers, Faelten, Driessen and Moeller have seen it all when it comes to M&A, and they’ve used this experience to develop their Three Big Mistakes of Deal-Making. Using case studies from a wide range of companies, many household names (Diageo, BMW, Microsoft, Kraft, HP and even Manchester United), and for deals ranging from the highly to the less successful to the downright questionable, Why Deals Fail offers both a commentary on the inexorable tendency for companies to merge, for good or ill, and a guide to the benefits and pitfalls of M&A as a growth strategy.
The result is a fascinating insight into why some deals work and why others go awry for anyone interested in how the corporate world works, or contemplating or facing a merger or acquisition themselves.
