• Safety Performance Reimagined: A 4D Approach to Organizational Performance

    03
This book reimagines how safety performance is done. The two authors share case studies and stories from decades of experience working with companies globally to create sustainable safety performance in high-risk operations. It takes a practitioner’s approach to translate academic theory into practical steps that can be used from the boardroom to the frontline.
Safety is ultimately about people. Safety Performance Reimagined identifies the need for a sociotechnical approach and introduces the concept of 4-Dimensional Safety which successfully navigates the complex interplay between people, technology, systems, the structures, and the markets they operate in.
How do leaders and the people conducting operations in complex environments create resilient, safe, and sustainable performance?
The conventional approach fails to equip organizations to handle the complex interplay between people and technology in workplaces. Safety Differently, Safety-II, and HOP have all contributed to answering the “what’s missing” question. They address the Why and the What of the New View of safety, but there is one more piece that needs more exploration—the How.
This book provides proven practical solutions and outlines ‘How’ organizations can achieve sustainable safety performance.

  • Safety-I and Safety-II: The Past and Future of Safety Management

    08
Safety has traditionally been defined as a condition where the number of adverse outcomes was as low as possible (Safety-I). From a Safety-I perspective, the purpose of safety management is to make sure that the number of accidents and incidents is kept as low as possible, or as low as is reasonably practicable. This means that safety management must start from the manifestations of the absence of safety and that – paradoxically – safety is measured by counting the number of cases where it fails rather than by the number of cases where it succeeds. This unavoidably leads to a reactive approach based on responding to what goes wrong or what is identified as a risk – as something that could go wrong. Focusing on what goes right, rather than on what goes wrong, changes the definition of safety from ‘avoiding that something goes wrong’ to ‘ensuring that everything goes right’. More precisely, Safety-II is the ability to succeed under varying conditions, so that the number of intended and acceptable outcomes is as high as possible. From a Safety-II perspective, the purpose of safety management is to ensure that as much as possible goes right, in the sense that everyday work achieves its objectives. This means that safety is managed by what it achieves (successes, things that go right), and that likewise it is measured by counting the number of cases where things go right. In order to do this, safety management cannot only be reactive, it must also be proactive. But it must be proactive with regard to how actions succeed, to everyday acceptable performance, rather than with regard to how they can fail, as traditional risk analysis does. This book analyses and explains the principles behind both approaches and uses this to consider the past and future of safety management practices. The analysis makes use of common examples and cases from domains such as aviation, nuclear power production, process management and health care. The final chapters explain the theoretical and practical consequences of the new perspective on the level of day-to-day operations as well as on the level of strategic management (safety culture). Safety-I and Safety-II is written for all professionals responsible for their organisation’s safety, from strategic planning on the executive level to day-to-day operations in the field. It presents the detailed and tested arguments for a transformation from protective to productive safety management.

  • Health and Safety Inspection Log: Notebook to document your site health and safety inspection

A safety inspection is a formalized and properly documented process of identifying hazards in the workplace.

  • The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth

    08

Conquer the most essential adaptation to the knowledge economy

The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth offers practical guidance for teams and organizations who are serious about success in the modern economy. With so much riding on innovation, creativity, and spark, it is essential to attract and retain quality talent―but what good does this talent do if no one is able to speak their mind? The traditional culture of “fitting in” and “going along” spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule or intimidate. Not every idea is good, and yes there are stupid questions, and yes dissent can slow things down, but talking through these things is an essential part of the creative process. People must be allowed to voice half-finished thoughts, ask questions from left field, and brainstorm out loud; it creates a culture in which a minor flub or momentary lapse is no big deal, and where actual mistakes are owned and corrected, and where the next left-field idea could be the next big thing.

This book explores this culture of psychological safety, and provides a blueprint for bringing it to life. The road is sometimes bumpy, but succinct and informative scenario-based explanations provide a clear path forward to constant learning and healthy innovation.

    • Explore the link between psychological safety and high performance
    • Create a culture where it’s “safe” to express ideas, ask questions, and admit mistakes
    • Nurture the level of engagement and candor required in today’s knowledge economy
    • Follow a step-by-step framework for establishing psychological safety in your team or organization

Shed the “yes-men” approach and step into real performance. Fertilize creativity, clarify goals, achieve accountability, redefine leadership, and much more. The Fearless Organization helps you bring about this most critical transformation.

  • Psychological Safety: The key to happy, high-performing people and teams

    03
Both scientific and industry research suggest that paying close attention to psychological safety has tangible benefits, not just to personal health and well-being, but to workplace productivity and performance. In 2015 Google released the findings of some compelling research known as “The Aristotle Project”. In its quest to build the perfect team, Google assessed the factors common to their high-performing teams. They were shocked to find it was not the background, the experience, or the education of the team members that determined the team’s success, but whether psychological safety was present within the team. Most of us understand the importance of physical safety. We protect ourselves and those around us, and know what physical interactions are socially acceptable, helpful, or harmful.Psychological safety, however, is a new frontier. Only now are we beginning to understand its importance and impact, thanks to recent advancements in neuroscience. For example, research shows that a “hit” to our psychological safety can have a deeper and longer-lasting impact than a “hit” to our physical selves. In fact, social rejection has the same impact on the brain as a punch to the face. Over time, the pain associated with a physical attack is difficult or impossible to recall. The memory of social rejection, however, even many years after the fact, can elicit the same strength of emotion as it did at the time of the event. When we experience an attack to our psychological safety, our brain is triggered into a stress response. Our cognitive abilities are compromised. Our higher, logical brain, the one responsible for thinking, creativity, decision-making, and self-control, goes off-line. In this derailed stress state we can find it difficult to concentrate, make decisions, or control our emotions. In a psychologically safe climate, people are not afraid to express themselves; they feel accepted and respected. This openness creates a fertile environment for thinking, creativity, innovation, and growth, and leads to more collaborative relationships and an overall improvement in individual and team productivity. So how do you identify and manage the triggers that threaten your psychological safety and hijack your brain?Based on the latest neuroscience research, the S.A.F.E.T.Y.™ model describes some of the most important social motivators of human behavior.Learn how to implement it in your life and your workplace, to reap the benefits of increased productivity and personal well-being. This revolutionary book offers actionable solutions to key questions that may be holding you (and your team) back from fulfilling your potential:● Why am I so anxious and stressed?● Why do I continue to do things I don’t want to do?● Why do I care so much about what others think of me?● Why do I self-sabotage?And the most vital question of all:● Why can’t I change?

  • Why Deals Fail and How to Rescue Them: M&A lessons for business success

    07

Mergers and acquisitions are part of the fabric of business and economic life: they help drive growth in companies of all sizes. Most executives will at some point in their careers experience a takeover, as buyer, seller or intermediary. Yet, despite M&A’s obvious attractions, deals often fall short of expectations and, in extreme cases, can go disastrously wrong, with devastating consequences.

From their unique perspective as practitioners and researchers, Faelten, Driessen and Moeller have seen it all when it comes to M&A, and they’ve used this experience to develop their Three Big Mistakes of Deal-Making. Using case studies from a wide range of companies, many household names (Diageo, BMW, Microsoft, Kraft, HP and even Manchester United), and for deals ranging from the highly to the less successful to the downright questionable, Why Deals Fail offers both a commentary on the inexorable tendency for companies to merge, for good or ill, and a guide to the benefits and pitfalls of M&A as a growth strategy.

The result is a fascinating insight into why some deals work and why others go awry for anyone interested in how the corporate world works, or contemplating or facing a merger or acquisition themselves.

  • The Case for the Green New Deal (Concept and Form)

    08
In 2008, the first Green New Deal was devised by Pettifor and a group of English economist and thinkers, but was ignored within the tumults of the financial crash. A decade later, the ideas was revived within the democratic socialists in the US, forefront by Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. The Green New Deal demands a radical and urgent reversal of the current state of the global economy: including total de-carbonisation and a commitment to fairness and social justice.

Critics on all sides have been quick to observe that the GND is a pipe dream that could never be implemented, and would cost the earth. But, as Ann Pettifor shows, we need to rethink the function of money, and how it works within the global system. How can we bail out the banks but not the planet? We have to stop thinking about the imperative of economic growth-nothing grows for ever. The program will be a long term project but it needs to start immediately.

  • Green New Deal, The: Why the Fossil Fuel Civilization Will Collapse by 2028, and the Bold Economic Plan to Save Life on Earth

    03
While the Green New Deal has become a lightning rod in the political sphere, there is a parallel movement emerging within the business community that will shake the very foundation of the global economy in coming years. The key sectors that make up the infrastructure of the economy are fast-decoupling from fossil fuels in favor of solar and wind energies that are becoming ever-cheaper. New studies are sounding the alarm about the prospect of 100 trillion dollars in stranded assets that are creating a carbon bubble likely to burst by 2028 – causing the collapse of the fossil fuel civilisation. The marketplace is speaking and governments will need to respond if they are to survive and prosper. In The Green New Deal, New York Times bestselling author and renowned economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin delivers the political narrative and economic plan for the Green New Deal that we need at this critical moment in history. The concurrence of a stranded fossil fuel assets bubble and a green political vision opens up the possibility of a massive shift to a post-carbon ecological era, in time to prevent a temperature rise that will tip us over the edge into runaway climate change. With twenty-five years of experience implementing Green New Deal-style transitions for both the European Union and the People’s Republic of China, Rifkin offers his vision for how to transform the global economy and save life on Earth.

  • Deals: The Economic Structure of Business Transactions

Drawing on real-life cases from a wide range of industries, two acclaimed experts offer a sophisticated but accessible guide to business deals, designed to maximize value for your side.

Business transactions take widely varying forms—from multibillion-dollar corporate mergers to patent licenses to the signing of an all-star quarterback. Yet every deal shares the same goal, or at least should: to maximize the joint value created and to distribute that value among the parties. Building on decades of experience teaching and advising on business deals, Michael Klausner and Guhan Subramanian show how to accomplish this goal through rigorous attention to designing incentives, conveying information, and specifying parties’ rights and obligations.

Deals captures the range of real-life transactional complexities with case studies covering Microsoft’s acquisition of LinkedIn, Scarlett Johansson’s contract dispute with Disney over the release of Black Widow, litigation surrounding LVMH’s pandemic-disrupted acquisition of Tiffany, the feud between George Norcross and Lewis Katz over ownership of the Philadelphia Inquirer, NBC/Viacom’s negotiation with Paramount over the final three seasons of Frasier, and many more. In clear, concise terms, Klausner and Subramanian establish the basic framework of negotiation and the economic concepts that must be addressed in order to maximize value. They show how to tackle challenges, such as information asymmetry between buyer and seller, moral hazard, and opportunistic behavior. And the authors lay out responses to common risks associated with long-term contracts, emphasizing that a deal’s exit rights should be carefully considered at the start of transaction design.

Unique in its practical application of economic theory to actual dealmaking, this book will be an indispensable resource for students and for professionals across the business and legal world.

  • Selling With: The art of selling with champions to shape internal buying conversations & close enterprise deals.

    02
You probably think sales reps close deals.

But the data’s in. Over 90% of B2B buying happens during internal meetings—not sales meetings.

Which means deals are won and lost when you’re not in the room.

Yet, the typical sales book and process still focuses on sales reps, in sales meetings. It’s like trying to win a Formula 1 Race while driving on the wrong track. Not exactly a winning strategy.

That’s why Selling With teaches you the art of Buyer Enablement—the process of creating committed champions for every deal in your pipeline, while enabling them to sell internally with a compelling, written message.

It’s time to shape the internal buying conversations happening about you, without you.

    ________

What the first readers are saying:

”This book solves one of the greatest sales challenges that’s yet to truly be addressed (selling when you aren’t in the room), making it one of the must-read sales books. I’ve been doing sales for almost 30 years, and I’m mesmerized by new tricks as I try to stay on top of my sales game. Nate’s a wizard and this book is a collection of his spells. Go forth and be magical!”

    – Mark Kosoglow, CRO at Catalyst

“With page after page of useful templates, frameworks, and other tactical best practices, Selling With is probably the most actionable sales book that’s ever been written.”

    – Matt Green, CRO at Sales Assembly

“In a sea of sales advice, Selling With nails it. It’s one of the best enterprise sales books I’ve read in a long time. While each chapter builds on the last, you can also jump around and choose your adventure to get precisely what you’re looking for, with easy-to-digest frameworks for mutual action plans, writing, proof of concepts, managing the “drama” in deals and more. Run, don’t walk to read this!”

    – Amy Volas, Founder & CEO at Avenue Talent Partners

“Consensus selling is hard. Consensus buying is harder. Nate brilliantly diagnoses this problem, and prescribes how to rethink your selling motion with empathetic eyes, poignant stories, and specific examples.”

    – Todd Caponi, Author of The Transparency Sale & The Transparent Sales Leader

“The hottest new skill every seller needs to master is the art of champion development. If you can’t find (and create) champions that sell when you’re not in the room, you’re toast. Nate’s the world’s expert on champion development, and enabling them with the business case to get deals done.”

    – Chris Orlob, Co-Founder & CEO at pclub.io

“Holy smokes. This book prevents the whiplash all new Enterprise AE’s feel, by sharing what every sales methodology leaves out — the psychology of buying behavior, and the specifics on HOW to apply it. Enterprise AE’s should run to grab Selling With. The smartest sales leaders will grab copies for their teams too.”

    – Krysten Connor, Sales Strategist at UserGems

“Most sellers fundamentally misunderstand how buyers make decisions in enterprise sales. Selling With is essential for sellers wanting to keep up with modern selling. It’s the first sales book that had me saying, ‘This is SO good’ time and time again.”

    – Kyle Asay, VP Sales at MongoDB

“The writing, thinking, and selling skills revealed by Selling With are on another level. Nate’s become one of my favorite reads and he doesn’t disappoint. With super actionable breakdowns and examples, this is a must read for any seller looking to improve and learn how to shape complex buying conversations.”

    – Keith Weightman, VP of Sales at Bullhorn

  • Venture Capital Deal Terms: A guide to negotiating and structuring venture capital transactions

    08
So you’re (about to be) involved in a Venture Capital deal. How do you ensure you end up with the best possible deal?

You need to know what you’re talking about. Not just on a basic level. On every level. You need to understand the ins and outs of the deal. What are your options? How exactly can they impact you, now as well as in the future? What are the people on the “other side of the table” aiming for? What are the pitfalls?

Only if you truly understand the deal, will you be able to come to the best possible deal. And to truly understand the deal, you need to understand the deal from the perspective of both the investor and the entrepreneur.

This new book of VC investor Harm de Vries and VC lawyers Menno van Loon and Sjoerd Mol, provides an in-depth practical look into venture capital deals. Together, the authors have been involved in hundreds of VC deals. Their expertise covers both the investor’s perspective and the entrepreneur’s perspective.

The book shows you how deal terms work out in practice and explains the economics behind the deal terms. And – crucially – it does so both from the point of view of the entrepreneur as well as that of the investor.

The book starts with an introduction of the investment process in general and the different stages of financing. Next, the book introduces a case study of a Series A financing of a startup. A Series A term sheet is used as the basis for the discussion of the different clauses used in venture capital transactions. Each subsequent chapter discusses a certain type of clause in the term sheet (e.g. milestone investments, liquidation preference, anti-dilution protection, and drag along). These chapters also include a standard (and, if applicable, alternative) version(s) of the relevant clause.

The book includes many examples, as well as negotiation tips for both entrepreneurs and investors. The result is an extremely practical guide to venture capital deals, which will be invaluable to anyone involved in venture capital transactions – investors, entrepreneurs and advisors.

For more information on this book and its authors, please see the book’s website: www.venturecapitaldealterms.com. The special VC Term Sheet Template contained in the book can be downloaded (for free) from the aforementioned website.

The environmental crisis under way is unique in human history. It is a true existential crisis. Those alive today will decide the fate of humanity. Meanwhile, the leaders of the most powerful state in human history are dedicating themselves with passion to destroying the prospects for organized human life. At the same time, there is a solution at hand, which is the Green New Deal. Putting meat on the bones of the Green New Deal starts with a single simple idea: we have to absolutely stop burning fossil fuels to produce energy within the next 30 years at most; and we have to do this in a way that also supports rising living standards and expanding opportunities for working people and the poor throughout the world. This version of a Green New Deal program is, in fact, entirely realistic in terms of its purely economic and technical features. The real question is whether it is politically feasible. • Disease (Giants: A New Beveridge Report)

In 1942 life expectancy at birth was 66 for women and 60 for men. Death was usually due to degenerative and infectious diseases. The greatest postwar success in the fight against disease was the establishment of the NHS and care that was free at the point of delivery. Life expectancy rose dramatically, but since 2011 incremental improvements have stalled and even, in some regions, begun to reverse. Infant mortality rates have crept up and the postcode lottery of health provision underscores the level of social inequality in the UK.

Good health is not simply the absence of disease. It is the collective of physical, social and mental well-being. It is the product of nutrition and genetics, of healthy lifestyles and preventative health interventions. It is the interaction between the conditions in which we live, work, play and age. Yet access to many of the things that make and keep us healthy are not evenly distributed in the population. Achieving good health is then deeply entwined with all aspects of society and cannot simply be solved by policies in one area alone.

In our rediscovery of Beveridge, the shadow of the pandemic looms large. It is has never been more urgent to address the underlying causes of Disease. And it has never been clearer that these determinants are not only social or physiological, but also political.

  • The Disease To Please: Curing the People-Pleasing Syndrome (NTC SELF-HELP)

    08

What’s wrong with being a “people pleaser?” Plenty!

“A fascinating book… If you struggle with where, when, and how to draw the line between your own desires and the demands of others, buy this book!”Kay Redfield Jamison, bestselling author of An Unquiet Mind and Night Falls Fast

People pleasers are not just nice people who go overboard trying to make everyone happy. Those who suffer from the Disease to Please are people who say “Yes” when they really want to say “No.” For them, the uncontrollable need for the elusive approval of others is an addiction. Their debilitating fears of anger and confrontation force them to use “niceness” and “people-pleasing” as self-defense camouflage.

Featured on NBC’s “Today,” The Disease to Please explodes the dangerous myth that “people pleasing” is a benign problem. Best-selling author and frequent “Oprah” guest Dr. Harriet Braiker offers clear, positive, practical, and easily do-able steps toward recovery.

Begin with a simple but revealing quiz to discover what type of people-pleaser you are. Then learn how making even small changes to any single portion of the Disease to Please Triangle – involving your thoughts, feelings, and behavior – will cause a dramatic, positive and long-lasting change to the overall syndrome.

As a recovered peoplepleaser, you will finally see that a balanced way of living that takes others into consideration but puts the emphasis first on pleasing yourself and gaining your own approval is the clearest path to health and happiness.
