The Teaching Delusion: Why teaching in our schools isn’t good enough (and how we can make it better)
The Teaching Delusion by senior education consultant Bruce Robertson offers a bold, refreshing and sometimes provocative stance on teaching and leadership. Informed by the latest educational research and drawing on two decades of professional experience, Robertson examines how teaching in schools can be transformed from good to great. The new title from John Catt Educational poses challenging yet important questions to its readers. Schools are filled with great teachers, but is great teaching taking place in every classroom? How can educators expect students to cultivate a lifelong passion for learning if they themselves are lacking this?
Robertson’s solution is twofold. To promote excellent teaching, there must be a shared understanding of what high-quality teaching really is what does it look like, and how can it be fostered? Secondly, there must be a school-wide desire to engage in professional learning. With his school having won the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Excellence in Professional Learning Award in 2019, Robertson uses his personal track-record of success to explore how these barriers can be addressed to lead to a transformation in teaching practice.
Written by a teacher and school leader for teachers and school leaders, The Teaching Delusion aims to support teaching communities to develop and improve their practice, in order to ensure that all students receive the same level of excellent education. Aligning himself firmly on the side of teachers and keen to avoid teacher bashing, Robertson sensitively engages in an often controversial discussion about how to improve the quality of teaching, aiming to boost knowledge, awareness and ultimately self-esteem in both educators and learners.
The Teaching Delusion combines practicality with pedagogy in a thoughtful, unique approach making it a vital resource for teachers and leaders at all levels who are looking to better their practice.

Oil and Gas – Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands – Rescission of a 2015 Rule (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition)
Oil and Gas – Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands – Rescission of a 2015 Rule (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Oil and Gas – Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands – Rescission of a 2015 Rule (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 On March 26, 2015, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) published in the Federal Register a final rule entitled, “Oil and Gas; Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands” (2015 rule). With this final rule, the BLM is rescinding the 2015 rule because we believe it imposes administrative burdens and compliance costs that are not justified. This final rule returns the affected sections of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) to the language that existed immediately before the published effective date of the 2015 rule (June 24, 2015), except for changes to those regulations that were made by other rules published between the date of publication of the 2015 rule and now, and the phrase “perform nonroutine fracturing jobs,” which is not restored to the list of subsequent operations requiring prior approval. None of the changes by other rules are relevant to this rulemaking. Segregation of Lands – Renewable Energy (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition)
Segregation of Lands – Renewable Energy (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Segregation of Lands – Renewable Energy (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is amending its regulations to add provisions allowing the BLM to temporarily segregate from the operation of the public land laws, by publication of a Federal Register notice, public lands included in a pending wind or solar energy generation right-of-way (ROW) application, and public lands that the BLM identifies for potential future wind or solar energy generation right-of-way applications under applicable legal requirements. The purpose of such segregation is to promote the orderly administration of the public lands. Lands segregated under this rule will not be subject to appropriation under the public land laws, including location under the Mining Law of 1872 (Mining Law), for up to two years from the date of publication of notice under this rule, subject to valid existing rights, but would remain open under the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 (MLA) and the Materials Act of 1947 (Materials Act). Competitive Processes, Terms, and Conditions for Leasing Public Lands for Solar and Wind Energy Development (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Competitive Processes, Terms, and Conditions for Leasing Public Lands for Solar and Wind Energy Development (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 Through this final rule the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is amending its regulations governing rights-of-way issued under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) and the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA). The principal purposes of these amendments are to facilitate responsible solar and wind energy development on BLM-managed public lands and to ensure that the American taxpayer receives fair market value for such development. This final rule includes provisions to promote the use of preferred areas for solar and wind energy development, called “designated leasing areas” (DLAs). It builds upon existing regulations and policies to expand BLM’s ability to utilize competitive processes to offer authorizations for development inside or outside of DLAs. It also addresses the appropriate terms and conditions (including payment and bonding requirements) for solar and wind energy development rights-of-way issued under the regulations. Finally, the rule makes technical changes, corrections, and clarifications to the existing rights-of-way regulations. Some of these changes affect all rights-of-way, while some provisions affect only specific rights-of-way, such as those for transmission lines with a capacity of 100 kilovolts (kV) or more. Silos, Politics and Turf Wars: A Leadership Fable About Destroying the Barriers That Turn Colleagues Into Competitors
Practical and hands-on strategies for breaking down silos and minimizing workplace politics
In yet another page-turner, New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed management expert Patrick Lencioni addresses the costly and maddening issue of silos: the barriers that create organizational politics. Silos devastate organizations, kill productivity, push good people out the door, and jeopardize the achievement of corporate goals.
As with his other books, Lencioni writes Silos, Politics, and Turf Wars as a fictional―but eerily familiar―story. The story is about Jude Cousins, an eager young management consultant struggling to launch his practice by solving one of the more universal and frustrating problems faced by his clients. Through trial and error, he develops a simple yet ground-breaking approach for helping them transform confusion and infighting into clarity and alignment.
In the book, you’ll find:
- Ways to recognize the devastating–and destructive–power of silos
- How to create an overarching thematic goal or rallying cry for your organization
- Strategies for employees to avoid the confusion that often accompanies working in matrix organizations
Perfect for executives, managers, and other business leaders, Silos, Politics, and Turf Wars will also earn a place in the libraries of consultants and other professionals who serve organizations of all sizes.

The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man: How America really took over the world
***THE WORD OF MOUTH INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER NOW UPDATED WITH 15 EXPLOSIVE NEW CHAPTERS***
False economics. Threats, bribes, extortion. Debt, deception, coups, assassinations and unbridled military power. These are the tools used by the ‘corporatocracy’ – a vast network of corporations, banks, colluding governments and rich and powerful individuals – to ensure that they retain and expand their wealth and influence, growing richer and richer as the poor become poorer.
In his original, post 9/11 book, John Perkins revealed how he was recruited as an economic hit man in the 1970s, and exposed the corrupt methods American corporations use to spread their influence in the developing world, cheating countries out of trillions of dollars. In this new, extensively updated edition he lays bare the latest, terrifying evolution of the economic hit man, and how the system has become even more entrenched and powerful than ever before.
In New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, John Perkins provides fresh and chilling evidence of how the corporatocracy has grown its influence to every corner of the globe, making us all unwitting slaves to their regime. But he also provides advice on how we can end our unconscious support of the system and its self-serving, lethal economy.

Prospect’s Best Books of the YearPoliticians are consistently voted the least trusted professional group by the UK public. They’ve recently become embroiled in scandals relating to everything from expenses to sexual harassment to illicit parties. Every year, they introduce new legislation that doesn’t do what it sets out to achieve – often with terrible financial and human costs. But, with some notable exceptions, they are decent, hard-working people, doing a hugely difficult and demanding job.
In this searching examination of our political class, award-winning journalist Isabel Hardman tries to square this circle. She lifts the lid on the strange world of Westminster and asks why we end up with representatives with whom we are so unhappy. Wealth, Poverty and Politics
In Wealth, Poverty, and Politics, Thomas Sowell, one of the foremost conservative public intellectuals in this country, argues that political and ideological struggles have led to dangerous confusion about income inequality in America. Pundits and politically motivated economists trumpet ambiguous statistics and sensational theories while ignoring the true determinant of income inequality: the production of wealth. We cannot properly understand inequality if we focus exclusively on the distribution of wealth and ignore wealth production factors such as geography, demography, and culture.Sowell contends that liberals have a particular interest in misreading the data and chastises them for using income inequality as an argument for the welfare state. Refuting Thomas Piketty, Paul Krugman, and others on the left, Sowell draws on accurate empirical data to show that the inequality is not nearly as extreme or sensational as we have been led to believe.
Transcending partisanship through a careful examination of data, Wealth, Poverty, and Politics reveals the truth about the most explosive political issue of our time.

Rugby! Be the best ‘You’ you can be!: Using the Rugby mindset for a positive and successful life
‘Rugby! Be the best `You` you can be!’, is about personal and professional development through the mindset of the Rugby player. We are all very different, but we all want to succeed and ultimately be happy. This book is a philosophy of improvement using Rugby Union as the mentor. When we want to improve ourselves on a personal level, we think about getting a `life coach`, and when we want to improve ourselves on a professional level, we think about getting a `mentor`. When we are looking to improve ourselves as a team, we go on `teambuilding exercises`. Rugby is all about personal and professional improvement and above all, teamwork! Life is the ultimate team sport! No matter who we are, we all have people we rely on, or that rely on us. Whether we have friends, family, students, teachers, clients, suppliers, employers and employees, we are all working together for success and happiness. I realised, after listening to many different specialists and studying many different techniques in business leadership, management, emotional intelligence and motivation, that there were many analogies and phrases from the world of sports but that was where it stopped. Understanding that a company is only as good as its team, why was I not learning from the greatest teams? Rugby is all about how to work effectively as a team and how to get the best from yourself and your teammates. There are also lessons in leadership, motivation, work ethic, self-awareness, positive mental attitude, self-control, discipline, patience, emotional intelligence, personal growth, responsibility, fulfilment, respect and, above all, happiness! A Rugby player cannot win on their own, therefore there is no success without a team. Simply put, we all understand sport and the sports team mentality, so we already understand how to succeed, personally and professionally. Studying leadership, motivation and teamwork is as complicated as watching the game at the weekend. This book shows how easy it is to create a winning mindset that will help you be more successful, positive and happy! Become the best `You` you can be with a sport team mentality. Grab life with both hands and win!Read more

WINNING! will talk about the team’s journey of innovation and discovery and will reveal exactly how it happened, the fundamentals of their success and how these principles can be applied to any human endeavour. ‘We changed the way we coached, the way we played and, of equal importance, how we operated off the field.’ Bringing his business management skills to the game, Woodward simplified the entire approach to the structure of the team and created new management systems both on and off the pitch.
In an anecdotal style, Clive Woodward entertains and informs while he describes the thrilling build-up to England’s World Cup triumph in 2003.

CROSSROADS: Rugby League’s Greatest Battle
Crossroads – Rugby League’s Greatest Battle is a contrarian and controversial look at rugby league in Australia and the great challenges and threats the code faces into the future.
After the bitter civil war of Super League in the mid 1990s that ripped the heart out of the game, the code was supposed to have a happy ending with the newly merged NRL in 1998 and the creation of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) in 2012 to govern the code independently, which would enable the code to fight fire with other sports in Australia and allow the sport to finally reach its potential. But that happy ending has eluded the sport and seems further away than ever before, despite the media’s lavish praise for current Chairman Peter V’landys.
Despite rugby league dominating and being the number one sport in both New South Wales and Queensland, with record television ratings, large media deals, solid crowds and extensive media coverage, the game faces great risks to its long-term success, both from within and externally, with threats from the nation’s strongest sport, the AFL.
The outside looks great to most fans, but as Covid exposed the fragilities of the code after years of fiscal mismanagement, only by going deeper do you see the real health of the patient.
Crossroads examines key matters which are not often discussed in today’s agenda-driven and non-independent corporate media, such as leadership, governance, the role of Peter V’landys, country rugby league, financial mismanagement, integrity and ethics, the dangers of today’s media, politics, grassroots, NRL product, expansion, the World Club Challenge and the international game.
Written from the perspective of a long-time fan who is completely independent, it’s a no-nonsense look at the sport and a must read for all who love rugby league.

Rassie: The Inspirational Autobiography from South Africa’s Double World-Cup Winning Coach
THE BOLD NEW MEMOIR FROM SOUTH AFRICA’S DOUBLE WORLD CUP-WINNING COACH RASSIE ERASMUS
Rassie Erasmus has been called a genius. He’s been called reckless. All his life, he’s done things differently. Now, with his trademark candour, Rassie talks openly about his adventures and misadventures at the pinnacle of world rugby, both as player and coach.
From his role in Nick Mallett’s record-breaking Springbok team of the late 1990s, to the devastating injuries that cut short his playing career, to his revolutionary coaching career, Rassie is an essential window into one of the most successful figures of modern rugby.
When his teammates relaxed, Rassie preferred to watch hours of video and devise winning strategies. His coaching methods were initially laughed off – before being eagerly adopted when their success proved undeniable. He fought the rugby establishment at the Stormers, and later earned the grudging respect of Irish fans at Munster.
Most crucially, Rassie talks about his greatest contribution to South African rugby: appointing its first black captain, Siya Kolisi, without much fanfare or controversy. As his bold plans for effective racial transformation of the national team achieved immediate success, they culminated in glory at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Here, that monumental period is recounted in vivid, insightful detail.
Entertaining and eye-opening, Rassie is full of behind-the-scenes revelations, telling the story of a towering figure in world rugby.

Adventures Of A Modern Renaissance Academic In Investing And Gambling, The: William T Ziemba (UBC): 12 (World Scientific Series in Finance)
This book tells the story of how financial markets have evolved over time and became increasingly more complex. The author, a successful and experienced trader, who among other things won the 2015 battle of the quants futures contest held in New York, shares how one can navigate today’s dangerous financial markets and be successful. Readers at all levels will benefit from his analysis and many real life examples and experiences. The coverage is broad and there is considerable discussion on ways to stay out of trouble, protect oneself and grow one’s assets. The author was the first one to do turn of the year January effect trades in the futures markets starting in the beginning of S&P 500 futures trading in 1982. That has been successful and the author explains his ideas and experiences from the beginning in simple markets to the current, very complex markets we have in 2017.
The author discusses the various ways that traders and investors lose money in the financial markets. Many examples are provided, including Long Term Capital Management, ENRON, Amarath, Neiderhoffer’s funds and many major companies such as Lehman Brothers, Society Generale, Saloman Brothers. This is invaluable to understanding ways to avoid such losses.
The author discusses great investors and their methods and evaluation and the authors work with several of them. Risk arbitrage and mean reversion strategies are described through actual use. Asset-liability models for pension funds, insurance companies and other financial institutions devised by the author are described. The author uses racetrack bias ideas in behavorial finance in trading index futures and options. Large stock market crashes that can be predicted are discussed with several models of the author and others. Eight mini crashes including the January-February 2016, Brexit and the Trump election that are plausible but largely unpredictable are described and how they were dealt with successfully.
Along with ways to deal with them, investment in top quality racehorses, oriental carpets, real estate and other interesting investments are covered. The author was instrumental in viewing racing as a stock market. The ideas are used by the top racing syndicates as well as hedge funds.
The book proceeds by weaving these aspects of the financial markets in the modern era into a story of the author’s academic, professional and personal life. This is told through the people he met and worked with and the academic and personal travel he had all over the world this past half century. The text is simply written with details, sources and references in the notes of each chapter. Details of various important events and how they evolved are described. There are numerous color and black and white photos in the text plus graphs, tables etc. in the notes to tell the story. The teaching and research into various financial and gambling markets takes the reader to interesting places around the world. These include the US and its many stock market ups and downs, Japan when they were ruling the financial world and then they collapsed, the UK visits with lectures, teaching and research work at their great Universities including Cambridge and Oxford, Europe with many activities in France, Italy, Germany and other places, to Asia including discussions about travels to Persia, Turkey, Singapore, Korea, China, Afghanistan, Russia and other countries. His work with horse racing syndicates took him to Australia and Hong Kong. Crises like those in Greece, US housing and internet and the flash crash are discussed.

Gambling on War: Confidence, Fear, and the Tragedy of the First World War
The First World War left a legacy of chaos that is still with us a century later. Why did European leaders resort to war and why did they not end it sooner? Roger L. Ransom sheds new light on this enduring puzzle by employing insights from prospect theory and notions of risk and uncertainty. He reveals how the interplay of confidence, fear, and a propensity to gamble encouraged aggressive behavior by leaders who pursued risky military strategies in hopes of winning the war. The result was a series of military disasters and a war of attrition which gradually exhausted the belligerents without producing any hope of ending the war. Ultimately, he shows that the outcome of the war rested as much on the ability of the Allied powers to muster their superior economic resources to continue the fight as it did on success on the battlefield.Read more

Gambling on Development: Why Some Countries Win and Others Lose
In the last thirty years, the developing world has undergone tremendous changes. Overall, poverty has fallen, people live longer and healthier lives, and economies have been transformed. And yet many countries have simply missed the boat. Why have some countries prospered, while others have failed? Stefan Dercon argues that the answer lies not in a specific set of policies, but rather in a key ‘development bargain’, whereby a country’s elites shift from protecting their own positions to gambling on a growth-based future. Despite the imperfections of such bargains, China is among the most striking recent success stories, along with Indonesia and more unlikely places, such as Bangladesh, Ghana and Ethiopia. Gambling on Development is about these winning efforts, in contrast to countries stuck in elite bargains leading nowhere. Building on three decades’ experience across forty-odd countries, Dercon winds his narrative through Ebola in Sierra Leone, scandals in Malawi, beer factories in the DRC, mobile phone licences in Mozambique, and relief programmes behind enemy lines in South Sudan. Weaving together conversations with prime ministers, civil servants and ordinary people, this is a probing look at how development has been achieved across the world, and how to assist such successes.Read more

Fortune’s Formula: The Untold Story of the Scientific Betting System That Beat the Casinos and Wall Street
In 1956 two Bell Labs scientists discovered the scientific formula for getting rich. One was mathematician Claude Shannon, neurotic father of our digital age, whose genius is ranked with Einstein’s. The other was John L. Kelly Jr., a Texas-born, gun-toting physicist. Together they applied the science of information theory–the basis of computers and the Internet–to the problem of making as much money as possible, as fast as possible.
Shannon and MIT mathematician Edward O. Thorp took the Kelly formula to Las Vegas. It worked. They realized that there was even more money to be made in the stock market. Thorp used the Kelly system with his phenomenally successful hedge fund, Princeton-Newport Partners. Shannon became a successful investor, too, topping even Warren Buffett’s rate of return. Fortune’s Formula traces how the Kelly formula sparked controversy even as it made fortunes at racetracks, casinos, and trading desks. It reveals the dark side of this alluring scheme, which is founded on exploiting an insider’s edge.
Shannon believed it was possible for a smart investor to beat the market–and William Poundstone’s Fortune’s Formula will convince you that he was right.
