Finding a Family for Tommy
Tommy needs a new family to give him lots and lots of love. Where will he find one? On a farm? In the pond? At the zoo? Open the flaps in this charming picture book to help him find out!Finding a Family for Tommy is primarily aimed at pre-school children, aged between 18 months and five years. The simple picture book with repetitive text and interactive pages gives carers and social workers an opportunity to discuss the meaning of family and belonging.
Repetition is the best form of learning for this age group and the gentle nature of the story should encourage children to ask for it often without being overwhelmed by it.
The book can be read in preparation for a move from foster care and during introductions to permanent carers or adopters. Children can struggle to articulate the complex emotions that arise during times of change, and very young children may not even be able to acknowledge their anxieties. This book can help to reassure them at every stage of the transition.
Carers can use it to discuss why the child needs a new family and what kind of families there are. The book is also designed to be used post-adoption to remind children that they were chosen for a family, and that their family was specially chosen for them.
This book will gradually introduce children to the concepts of adoption and fostering. However, it has been mainly devised as a tool to help carers raise emotional issues and to give children opportunities to ask questions and seek answers.
Guidelines included with the text give suggestions for points to discuss with children.

So You’ve Adopted a Sibling: A big sister’s survival guide for big brothers and sisters through adoption of a younger child or baby | Adoption shower … Kinship Care and…
From the author of award-winning foster care and adoption books Delly Duck, Room in the Nest and other adoption, fostering and kinship care children’s stories, comes an adorably-illustrated story to help elder siblings to adjust to a new sibling joining their family by adoption. So You’ve Adopted a Sibling features charming illustrations from Marlow’s daughter, a real 5 year old big sister. The engaging story is told in the voice of a young child who is enjoying being a big sister through adoption, and shares her top tips for other children who have a younger brother or sister who has joined their family through adoption. The story touches upon some of the emotions and changes to routine that children may experience in the early months as a big brother or sister.
Marlow is a biological and adoptive mother, and understands the challenges faced by parents who adopt after having a biological child. Most children have an established routine by the time they move to their adoptive family, and one of the primary goals of the adoptive family is to try to minimise the changes to this routine during transitions, to help the adopted child to settle in. Marlow found that this meant that there were quite a lot of changes to her biological daughter’s routines, so they worked together to write this story to help other parents to support their children through this.
This story is suitable for birth/biological children, as well as elder siblings who were adopted/placed in an adoptive family themselves prior to their younger sibling joining the family.

This beautiful, sensitively written story explains why a child may need to be removed from their birth parent, and explores in a gentle way the emotions felt by parent and child, and the roles other people play in protecting the child, and offering the child a loving, safe environment…” – Icing on the BakePlease click on the author’s name to see more titles by Holly Marlow.

Dara now lives by the beach in Sydney with her family. Her favourite things are cuddles with her kids, being in the ocean and almost anything that sparkles. On the more serious side, Dara is a writer and social justice lawyer. She has worked as a children’s lawyer and youth worker. She has also been a senior ministerial adviser for children who are adopted and in out-of-home care. For more info, see www.dararead.com
Praise for this book
“When I first read We Love You Hundreds and Thousands I was overwhelmed. Never had I read a book which spoke to contemporary adoption and permanent care so well. Through my networks of foster and adoptive parents I often hear of primarily school children struggling with telling their friends that they don’t live with their birth parents. These children see themselves as being just like all of the other children at school and they are proud of who they are. But their friends often don’t know how to react. This book speaks to those children. It speaks to their friends. It speaks to the parents of those friends. It is a book I love to read with my adoptive and biological children and a book I share with my family and friends who have connections with adoption or permanent care.” – Kelly – mum of Hope (age 6), Abigail (age 3) and Stevie (age 3)

The Forever Family
One night, Little Bear was cosied up on Mama Bear’s knee. “I want to tell you a story” she said. “Now, listen carefully.”In this exquisitely illustrated and touching story, featuring charming woodland animals and lyrical prose, a little bear learns from his mama bear about how he became a part of their family.
She shares that are many reasons that mamas and papas can be unable to take care of their young, and that when a little baby bear was found alone, all of the forest creatures came together to search for him a forever family. A family who would care and protect, feed and bathe, tickle and cuddle, teach and play – and especially give lots of love. The little bear was lucky to have a nurturing foster mama who did all of these things during the search…until the perfect family was found. A family whose dearest wish came true with the arrival of the little bear.Author and illustrator Sue Banner’s eloquent storytelling and painterly illustrations in gentle muted and earthy tones create a calm and soothing read-aloud that all families and educators of young children will love – those whom this story resonates on a personal level and those for whom the story provides a better understanding of the loving families formed through the adoption and foster care experience.
