FRENCH SENTENCE BUILDERS – B to Pre – LISTENING – STUDENT: French Sentence Builders (The Language Gym – Sentence Builder Books)
This booklet contains exercises for students to fill in .
The French Listening Booklet matches to the minutest details the content of the 19 units included in the best-selling workbook for beginner-to-pre-intermediate learners “French sentence builders”, by the same authors.
For best results, the two books should be used together.
This book fully implements Dr Conti’s popular approach to listening-skills instruction, L.A.M. (aka Listening-As-Modelling), laid out in his seminal work: “Breaking the Sound Barrier: Teaching Learners how to Listen” (Conti and Smith, 2019).
L.A.M. is based on the concept that listening instruction should train students in the mastery of the key micro-listening skills identified by cognitive psychologists.
Each unit contains around 13 listening tasks, which provide continuous and extensive recycling of the target constructions and vocabulary items and address the development of the key listening micro-skills.
The tasks include engaging and tested Conti classics such as: “Spot the intruder”, “Missing details”, “Faulty transcript”, “Break the flow”, “Faulty translation”, “Gapped translation” and “Listening slalom”, alongside more traditional listening comprehension tasks.

FRENCH SENTENCE BUILDER – GCSE REVISION: French Sentence Builders – GCSE (The Language Gym – Sentence Builder Books)
This book is meant as a revision resource for GCSE French. It can be used independently by students as well as for teacher-directed classroom practice. It contains 16 units which focus mainly on the themes: myself, family and relationships, daily activities, my role model, hobbies and leisure.
Each unit consists of a knowledge organiser recapping the target sentence patterns and lexical items, a series of receptive vocabulary building activities; a set of narrow reading texts and activities; a set of translation tasks. The tasks are graded in order to pose an increasingly demanding but manageable cognitive load and challenge and are based on Dr Conti’s P.I.P.O. framework:
Pre-reading tasks (activation of prior knowledge and pre-teaching)
In-reading tasks (intensive exploitation of texts)
Post-reading tasks (consolidation)
Output (pushed-output tasks)
Consistent with Dr Conti’s E.P.I. approach, each of the 16 units in the book provide extensive recycling of the target lexical items both within each unit and throughout the book, across all the dimensions of receptive and productive processing, i.e.: orthography (single letters and syllables), lexis (both words and chunks), grammar/syntax (with much emphasis on functional and positional processing), meaning and discourse.
The recycling occurs through input-flooding and forced retrieval through a wide range of engaging, tried and tested, classic Conti tasks (more than 20 per unit). These include student favourites such as slalom writing, faulty translation, spot the missing detail, sentence puzzles, etc.

French Verb Grammar Pivots – Beginner to Pre-intermediate: Unlocking French Grammar – Beginner to Pre Interm. (The Language Gym – Sentence Builder Books)
The French Verb Pivots book focuses on the present indicative, but also covers the immediate future, and aller + infinitive. It is aimed at learners in the A1-B1 proficiency range. It was conceived both for classroom and independent use, whatever the method, setting or course, as it offers ample opportunities for practice through a wide range of activities designed to appeal to learners with a variety of cognitive styles and learning preferences. It can be used to introduce the target verbs and associated grammar and lexicogrammar patterns to absolute beginners. It can also be useful if you teach lower-to-intermediate learners (years 9 to 11 in the U.K.) in order to consolidate, expand and deepen their mastery of those verbs and patterns. The latter learners, in our experience, are often able to master verb formation, but lack depth of knowledge, i.e. knowledge of verb collocations (which lexis the verbs partner with) and colligations (the rules which bind the verbs with what comes before and after them in a sentence).
Each of the 9 macro-units start ‘small’ with the target verb being learnt within very basic sentence patterns and in the first person only. As each unit progresses the target verbs are modelled in sentence patterns which gradually increase in length and complexity. In order to enhance transferrability of learning and lexical depth, each verb is also practised with a variety of lexical sets. For instance, the verbs Être & Avoir are practised, in context, with animals, classroom objects, clothes, physical description, emotional and physical states, age, etc.
Traditional grammar and lexicogrammar intersect throughout the whole book, as, in order for the learners to be able to become creative with each sentence pattern, they must also master the manipulation of the changeable items in each sentence such as verbs, adjectives, pronouns determiners, etc. The teaching of grammar arises organically from the need to enhance the generative power of each target sentence pattern – this is a major innovation of this book.
The book is very mindful of cognitive load. Hence, each instructional sequence gradually increases the cognitive challenge, with receptive activities in the initial section of each sub-unit paving the way for the productive ones located at the end and with each task priming the next. It goes without saying that the repeated processing and the constant recycling also makes it easier for the content to become effortlessly entrenched.
How can one supplement this book to enhance its impact?
