Adoption Law: A Practical Guide
The Adoption and Children Act 2002, which sets out the statutory framework, contains 115 sections and 5 schedules. These provisions are supported by secondary legislation, international conventions, rules, guidance, practice notes and case law that has developed since the Act came into force. The paramount consideration in every decision relating to the adoption of a child is the child’s welfare throughout their life. In doing so the decision maker also has to consider and balance the competing rights protected under the European Convention on Human Rights of all parties in the adoption process and also the child’s rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Adoption Law: A Practical Guide seeks to provide a comprehensive guide to the law, practice and procedure for professionals as well as those who are concerned with or involved in the adoption process. It covers each stage of the adoption process, including the difficult issue of contact between the child and their birth parents and the alternative options available by reference to the relevant case law and regulations in relation to domestic adoptions as well as adoptions with a foreign element. Registration of adoption and the sensitive issue of disclosure of information are also considered. The book deals with the statutory obligations and responsibilities imposed on adoption agencies, support services and other professional bodies who are concerned with adoption towards all the parties, including the child who is the subject of the proceedings. It also outlines the rights of those parties to challenge decisions made by the professional bodies involved in the process.Read more

Adoption Unfiltered: Revelations from Adoptees, Birth Parents, Adoptive Parents, and Allies
Reveals the candid thoughts and feelings of those most directly involved in adoptions: the adoptee, the adopters, and the birth parents.Adoption Unfiltered authors Sara Easterly (adoptee), Kelsey Vander Vliet Ranyard (birth parent), and Lori Holden (adoptive parent) interview more than 30 adoptees, 20 birth parents, a dozen adoptive parents, and several industry professionals―all sharing candidly about the challenges in adoption. While finding common ground in the sometimes-contentious space of adoption may seem like a lofty goal, it reveals the authors’ optimistic aim: working together with truth and transparency to move toward healing. Flipping the typical script, in which adoptive parents take the lion’s share of the narrative, this book leads with adoptee stories then moves on to stories of challenges and perspectives of birth parents―so often marginalized and silent. The third section offers narratives from adoptive parents who are working through their unique challenges. We also hear from adoption professionals, who share the challenges of operating ethically amid rampant unethical practices in the unregulated world of finding infants and children for homes. Finally, we hear from activists and adoption-competent therapists, offering their ideas to make adoption policies and practices better for all involved. Adoption is a beautiful experience but has challenges just like any other relationship or family system. The unique perspectives found here can help to smooth out the rough spots, celebrate the joys, and provide comfort and confirmation for everyone involved in the adoption journey.Read more

Inclusive Education for Autistic Children: Helping Children and Young People to Learn and Flourish in the Classroom
This book presents original, empirical research that reframes how educators should consider autism and educational inclusion. Rebecca Wood carefully unpicks common misapprehensions about autism and how autistic children learn, and reconsiders what inclusion can and should mean for autistic learners in school settings.
Drawing on research and interwoven with comments from autistic child and adult contributors throughout, the book argues that inclusion will only work if the ways in which autistic children think, learn, communicate and exhibit their understanding are valued and supported. Such an approach will benefit both the learner and the whole classroom. Considering topics such as the sensory environment, support, learning and cognition, school curriculums, communication and socialisation, this much needed book offers ideas and insight that reflect the practical side of day-to-day teaching and learning, and shows how thinking differently about autism and inclusion will equip teachers to effectively improve teaching conditions for the whole school.

Reparenting the Child Who Hurts: A Guide to Healing Developmental Trauma and Attachments
Finally, a parenting book which demystifies the latest thinking on neurobiology, physiology and trauma and explains what the research means for the everyday life of parents of children who hurt.
As experts on adoption and fostering who are adoptive parents themselves, Caroline Archer and Christine Gordon explain how this knowledge can help parents to better understand and care for their child. They explain why conventional parenting techniques are often not helpful for the child who has experienced early trauma and explore why therapeutic reparenting is the only way to help repair the unhealthy neurobiological and behavioural patterns which affect the child’s development. They do not shy away from how difficult reparenting is, acknowledging how hard it can be to recognise our own fallibility as parents and to change our own parenting patterns. The authors also offer hard-won advice on a range of common parenting flashpoints – from defusing arguments and aggression to negotiating bedtimes and breaks in routine, and making sure that special occasions are remembered for all the right reasons.
Reparenting the Child Who Hurts is a humane, no-nonsense survival guide for any parent caring for a child with developmental trauma or attachment difficulties, and will also provide information and insights for social workers, teachers, counsellors and other professionals involved in supporting adoptive and foster families.

Beyond Coping Skills: The Ultimate Teens’ Workbook: Integrating CBT and DBT for Lasting Emotional Regulation and Personal Growth (Successful Parenting)
There are over 55,000 posts about #MentalHealth on TikTok, viewed by more than 188 million users. This shows that mental health awareness is becoming a hot topic for many young people.
With all of this content flooding the internet, it is becoming easier for teens to find peers who are faced with similar psychological issues. But more often than not, they are still left confused about how to respond to these challenges in positive ways.
What seems to be lacking isn’t education about stress or anxiety, but rather effective cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills to confront obstacles head on. Above and beyond the guidance offered by friends, parents, and schoolteachers, teens can also benefit from learning how to improve their reactions to stressful situations.
Beyond Coping Skills: The Ultimate Teens’ Workbook is an easy-to-use self-directed therapy workbook that can help teenagers aged 13–19 practice core CBT and DBT skills from the comfort of their own bedrooms.
Yes, that’s right! In this digital age, where there is an app for virtually everything, and information is available at the touch of a button, therapy has become more affordable and accessible online!
Several studies have proven the success of both CBT and DBT in managing stress, regulating strong emotions, and modifying behaviors—and the best part is that the same skills taught in a counseling room can be practiced at home too!
Over the course of 5 chapters, 28 journal prompts, and 50 exercises, teens can look forward to learning:- The power of the pause when sensing triggers and managing impulsive urges.
- How to identify and detach from unwanted thoughts and emotions.
- Strategies on how to define, brainstorm, and implement solutions for everyday life problems.
- How to develop self-respect through boundary setting and positive conflict resolution.
The purpose of this workbook is to mentally prepare teens for unexpected and ongoing stressful situations they may face at home or at school. Through a powerful combination of CBT and DBT skills, they will be able to walk away with knowledge on how to reflect, reframe, and readjust their thoughts and emotions to achieve desired goals.

The Teens’ Workbook to Self Regulate: Empowering Teenagers to Handle Emotions with Success through Coping Strategies and CBT Exercises (Successful Parenting)
On the surface, you see a highly sensitive and irritable teenager. But look closer, and you will notice a kid showing signs of emotional distress.
Research shows that modern teenagers—our beloved Gen Zers—experience similar stress levels as adults. However, unlike adults who have been exposed to various coping mechanisms, young people are often confused about ways to cope with stress.
Now more than ever, parents are stepping up and teaching their teens how to psychologically equip themselves for modern challenges. After all, we can’t leave it up to school teachers or social media influencers to prepare our children for the world!
But as much as teens need the support, they desire to work through their problems, at their own pace, in their own time.
The combination of psychotherapy and self-directed learning is an effective way for teenagers to learn about healthy coping strategies, in their own time, in the comfort of their bedrooms.
Without any external pressure, teens are able to study and practice various mind and body techniques and create their own toolkits of useful skills to manage stress and anxiety.
The Teens’ Workbook to Self-Regulate is a valuable resource that introduces modern teenagers to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a form of psychotherapy created to develop emotional regulation and behavioral modification skills.
The workbook is broken down into two parts: cognitive techniques and behavioral techniques, and provides teens with exercises that reinforce the following skills:- Understanding the impact of negative thinking in shaping beliefs, motivations, and worldviews.
- Learning how to identify, describe, and manage strong emotions without hurting themselves or others.
- Finding healthy alternative strategies to cope with stress and anxiety without succumbing to urges.
- Knowing how and when to stop, breathe, and return to a normal state when feeling overwhelmed.
These skills—and many more—are taught over 42 age-appropriate exercises, which are designed to help teens between the ages of 13 and 19 reflect on their personal life experiences and examine their own thoughts and behaviors.
The workbook will not only serve as a companion for your child during stressful life events but will also help them prepare for future challenges that require mental and emotional resilience.
So, what are you still waiting for? Make an investment in your teen’s mental health, and get yourself a copy of The Teens’ Workbook to Self-Regulate, today!Read more

Supporting direct contact after adoption
A number of adopted children have direct contact with members of their birth family after adoption. But contact can be difficult to arrange and challenging for all those involved. This important research study outlines the first investigation of the government and council services established to support direct post-adoption contact. The study draws on the experiences of 51 adoptive parents, four long-term foster carers and 39 birth relatives, all of whom were involved in agency supported direct contact. Individual experiences of the challenges and benefits of direct contact are described, different models of contact are explored, and their costs, benefits and suitability described. Finally, the study sets out the implications for social work practice and what agencies can do to improve the contact experience. This study will be of particular interest to social workers and support workers in child and family teams, adoption and post-adoption support teams, legal professionals, child mental health professionals, adoption researchers and students.Read more
