REVIEW by LIMPING CHICKEN– “The World’s Most Popular Deaf Blog”
Review by Rebecca-Anne Withey.
“I’ve been enjoying a book from the Let’s Sign BSL series by Cath Smith.BSL Baby Sign Link book is a first for DeafBooks due to how the illustrations also feature QR codes to scan and link to video clips of moving images – so you can see the signs in action! The video links are by Remark! and demonstrated by a Deaf BSL user.
The illustrations in the book are beautifully clear, with easy to follow instructions yet I was anxious how the video clips would work, being the technophobe I am!
I needn’t have worried. All you need is an internet connection, a smart phone and to download a free scanner straight onto your phone.
Not only does the book feature a wide range of every day signs from food and drink to praises such as well done and good boy/girl, it also has a clear chart of the finger spelling alphabet as well as descriptions of basic hand shapes (which I wasn’t previously aware of!)
The series of signs are divided into chapters such as Going Out, Making Things Better and In the Bathroom.”…………..
……….“I was pleased to see that DeafBooks has a much wider range of resources available, from flash cards and BSL songbooks to curriculum support and eBooks for family signs.
I will also be recommending their BSL series to friends of mine who have expressed interest in their hearing children learning BSL as at the moment in my area there are no BSL classes available for children.
Congratulations to DeafBooks and to Remark! for producing such a valuable resource. ”
Note from DeafBooks – the QR codes can also be scanned from the camera on smart phones and ipads.
.
There are additional notes and tips beneath the video clips and you can comment and ask questions. Your suggestions and feedback are welcome.

Adoption Law: A Practical Guide
The Adoption and Children Act 2002, which sets out the statutory framework, contains 115 sections and 5 schedules. These provisions are supported by secondary legislation, international conventions, rules, guidance, practice notes and case law that has developed since the Act came into force. The paramount consideration in every decision relating to the adoption of a child is the child’s welfare throughout their life. In doing so the decision maker also has to consider and balance the competing rights protected under the European Convention on Human Rights of all parties in the adoption process and also the child’s rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Adoption Law: A Practical Guide seeks to provide a comprehensive guide to the law, practice and procedure for professionals as well as those who are concerned with or involved in the adoption process. It covers each stage of the adoption process, including the difficult issue of contact between the child and their birth parents and the alternative options available by reference to the relevant case law and regulations in relation to domestic adoptions as well as adoptions with a foreign element. Registration of adoption and the sensitive issue of disclosure of information are also considered. The book deals with the statutory obligations and responsibilities imposed on adoption agencies, support services and other professional bodies who are concerned with adoption towards all the parties, including the child who is the subject of the proceedings. It also outlines the rights of those parties to challenge decisions made by the professional bodies involved in the process.Read more

Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches (Updated and Expanded Edition)
The doctrine of adoption―God’s decision to adopt sinful men and women into his family―stands at the heart of Christianity. In light of this, Christians’ efforts to adopt beautifully illustrate the truth of the gospel. In this popular-level and practical manifesto, Russell Moore encourages Christians to adopt children and to help other Christian families to do the same. He shows that adoption is not just about couples who have struggled to have children. Rather, it’s about an entire culture within evangelicalism―a culture that sees adoption as part of the Great Commission mandate and as a sign of the gospel itself.

That Picture of You: A dramatic real-life story of adoption and reunion

When she goes on tragically to suffer a miscarriage, a hospital counsellor encourages the playwright to set her grief out on the page. Half A Million Women is the result. But when the play is by pure coincidence performed on her long-lost daughter’s twenty-first birthday, no-one could possibly have imagined the real-life drama about to unfold off-stage. The remarkable real-life story made national headlines. That will come as no surprise when you read the dramatic events of the heart-wrenching reunion of mother and daughter. A truly dramatic story capturing spirit of time and place, this deeply moving and warmly funny book is ultimately, above all, joyful.Read more

You’ll Forget This Ever Happened: Secrets, Shame, and Adoption in the 1960s
Mississippi, 1967. It’s the Summer of Love, yet unwed mothers’ maternity homes are flourishing, secret closed adoptions are routine, and many young women still have no voice. In You’ll Forget This Ever Happened, Laura Engel takes us back to the Deep South during the turbulent 1960s to explore the oppression of young women who have committed the socially unacceptable crime of becoming pregnant without a ring on their finger. After being forced to give up her newborn son for adoption, Engel lives inside a fortress of silent shame for fifty years—but when her secret son finds her and her safe world is cracked open, those walls crumble.
Are you still a mother even if you have not raised your child? Can the mother/child bond survive years of separation? How deep is the damage caused by buried family secrets and shame? Engel asks herself these and many other questions as she becomes acquainted with the son she never knew, and seeks the acceptance and forgiveness she has long denied herself. Full of both aching sadness and soaring joy, You’ll Forget This Ever Happened is a shocking exposé of a shameful part of our country’s recent past—and a poignant tale of a mother’s enduring love.

Help Your Child Deal With Stress – and Thrive: The transformative power of Self-Reg
We are seeing a generation of children and teens with excessively high levels of stress, and, as a result, an explosion of health problems in young people today. But few parents recognise the ‘hidden stressors’ that their children are struggling with.
This book, previously published as Self-Reg, will give you the tools to help you recognise stress and understand your child’s behaviour, and teach your stressed, emotional child to identify their ‘big’ emotions and get back on an even keel by themselves.
Stress can affect your child in many ways – whether it’s exam pressure, pressure exerted by friends online or in the playground, or related to health, with lack of sleep and anxiety at home contributing. Help Your Child Deal With Stress – and Thrive is a ground-breaking parenting book, in which Dr Stuart Shanker argues that by teaching children the art of self-regulation, it can transform their behaviour and help them to identify, talk about and manage their emotions. This leads to a harmonious home, and children who feel nurtured and supported.
Mastering the art of self-regulation can help children learn to deal with experiences, overcome frustration, pay better attention, engage better with others and enhance their learning capabilities. In turn, children will develop the confidence, along with the skills and emotional strength needed to navigate the pressures and stresses of the modern world.
Underpinned by science, Dr Shanker’s techniques have had a remarkable effect on children and parents alike, and hundreds of thousands of children who have gone through the programme in Canada have shown significant improvement in literacy, numeracy and behaviour.
‘In this important and timely book, Stuart Shanker encourages us to see our children in a whole new light and gives us the tools we need to help nurture our young in order that they can better manage stress, build resiliency and improve their emotional health. Today’s pupils are under serious pressure to perform; by helping children recognize, identify and talk about their emotions, we can help them find balance and ultimately realise their true potential.’ – Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, co-founder of Action for Happiness and best-selling author

The Marriage Handbook: Marriage in Islam: Before, During, and After (Islamic Handbooks)
All praise is for Allah alone, and may his choicest salutations, mercy and blessings be upon His Prophet Muḥammad.
This is a concise textbook summarizing key aspects of marriage in Islam.Marriage is a beautiful union that completes the individual and enables emotional, social and physical well-being. This union forms the basic building block that makes up the foundation of families, which form communities, which combine to create societies. When marriages are strong and healthy, societies thrive. Weak marriage relationships negatively impact emotional, social and economical state of individuals and communities, and this directly affects the success of children growing up in such conditions. Marriage is the way of the prophets, and a virtuous act. It safeguards dignity and virtue.
Islam supports and encourages marriage, and provides a detailed framework for approaching, enacting and maintaining marriage. The institution of marriage is described as a blessing: And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves spouses that you may find comfort with; and He created between you affection and mercy. Indeed in this are signs for a people who reflect (Q 30:21).This book
The text is brief and to the point, enriched with Qurʾānic verses and hadiths. The Qurʾānic verses are in green and hadiths are in blue. The aim of the book is not to explain every aspect of marriage, thus the students are encouraged, after grasping the information in this text, to consult with scholars and study larger works of fiqh for further and more technical discussions.

Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxiety and Depression: A Practical Guide for Practitioners and Parents
Tackling mental-emotional health problems in young people from a Chinese medicine perspective, this book shows how a child’s mental-emotional health is intrinsically connected with core elements of their everyday life. It suggests an approach to preventing and healing anxiety and depression that involves neither medication nor costs anything.
Part One of the book explains Chinese medicine concepts related to mental-emotional health in a way that is accessible for those with no prior knowledge. It includes chapters on how to recognise a child’s Five Element imbalance and how children of each element type need a different kind of nurture and lifestyle in order to remain mentally-emotionally healthy. Each chapter in Part Two examines a particular pillar of mental-emotional health such as connection, family life, emotions, and diet through a Chinese medicine lens. Each chapter is full of practical tips. Throughout, there is an emphasis on guiding parents and practitioners to discern what is right for a particular child, and that each child will need something different.
Addressing childhood anxiety and depression using a unique, accessible, and practical perspective, Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxiety and Depression is an invaluable book for practitioners and parents alike.

Inclusive Education for Autistic Children: Helping Children and Young People to Learn and Flourish in the Classroom
This book presents original, empirical research that reframes how educators should consider autism and educational inclusion. Rebecca Wood carefully unpicks common misapprehensions about autism and how autistic children learn, and reconsiders what inclusion can and should mean for autistic learners in school settings.
Drawing on research and interwoven with comments from autistic child and adult contributors throughout, the book argues that inclusion will only work if the ways in which autistic children think, learn, communicate and exhibit their understanding are valued and supported. Such an approach will benefit both the learner and the whole classroom. Considering topics such as the sensory environment, support, learning and cognition, school curriculums, communication and socialisation, this much needed book offers ideas and insight that reflect the practical side of day-to-day teaching and learning, and shows how thinking differently about autism and inclusion will equip teachers to effectively improve teaching conditions for the whole school.
