  • Supporting direct contact after adoption

A number of adopted children have direct contact with members of their birth family after adoption. But contact can be difficult to arrange and challenging for all those involved. This important research study outlines the first investigation of the government and council services established to support direct post-adoption contact. The study draws on the experiences of 51 adoptive parents, four long-term foster carers and 39 birth relatives, all of whom were involved in agency supported direct contact. Individual experiences of the challenges and benefits of direct contact are described, different models of contact are explored, and their costs, benefits and suitability described. Finally, the study sets out the implications for social work practice and what agencies can do to improve the contact experience. This study will be of particular interest to social workers and support workers in child and family teams, adoption and post-adoption support teams, legal professionals, child mental health professionals, adoption researchers and students.

  • What White Parents Should Know about Transracial Adoption–The Workbook: Practical Tools, Skills, and Prompts for Affirming Your Adopted Child’s Cultural Identity

A companion to What White Parents Should Know about Transracial Adoption, this practical workbook guides readers to better understand transracial adoption and do the work of anti-racist, trauma-informed parenting.

A must-read for white parents who have transracially adopted or prospective parents considering transracial adoption, this follow-up to What White Parents Should Know about Transracial Adoption offers a wealth of activities, templates, and questions for self-reflection. Melissa Guida-Richards, who learned at the age of 19 that she was adopted from Colombia as an infant, addresses the complexities of transracial adoption with insight, compassion, and the wisdom of lived experience. Through thought-provoking questions and activities, Guida-Richards guides you to:

    • Consider the role of infant-mother bonding and understand developmental trauma in adoptees
    • Understand the complex history of adoption; recognize illegal and unethical practices, such as trafficking operations and baby factories; and ask the important questions when working with adoption agencies
    • Look more deeply at implicit bias, white saviorism, and white fragility
    • Locate and utilize adoption-competent mental health care
    • Offer culturally aligned education, community, and resources to your child
    • Acknowledge the effects of racism and celebrate your child’s race and culture

Throughout the workbook, Guida-Richards guides you to break free from toxic positivity, understand and drop defenses, engage in difficult conversations, and learn to listen to your child’s experience. Whether you are a potential parent considering a transracial adoption, a parent of an adopted child, or a therapist or advocate working with adoptive families, this practical and engaging workbook will help you “do the work” of furthering anti-racist, child-centered, and trauma-informed parenting.

  • Navigating Foster Care and Adoption: A Comprehensive Guide to Fostering & Adopting Children: From Screening… to Placement… to Overcoming Obstacles and Building Loving Families

The requirements of the child being fostered as well as the life situation of the foster parent can both have a significant impact on the type of foster care that can be provided. Some children remain in foster care for only a few days or weeks at a time, whilst others may remain there for several months or even years at a time. Foster parents have the option of taking care of only one kid at a time, as well as taking care of numerous children at once, including siblings.

Adoption may offer children who need a loving home with stability, security, and a feeling of belonging in their new family. Adopted children sometimes come from tough situations, such as households in which they were abused or neglected, and consequently, they may have suffered trauma or struggle with emotional challenges. These children may be given the love and support, as well as the secure and caring home environment that they need in order to recover and grow when they are adopted by loving families.

My desire to write an eBook about fostering and adoption is driven by a desire to share my experience and insights with others who may be considering fostering or adopting. My story can serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for others, providing practical advice and emotional support for those embarking on this challenging journey.

  • The Adoption Constellation: New Ways of Thinking About and Practicing Adoption

Clinical psychologist, Michael Grand, brings a compassionate understanding to all members of the adoption constellation. Drawing upon a lifetime of personal experience, research and clinical practice, he challenges conventional ways of thinking about adoption. The limitations of attachment theory as an explanation of adoption outcome are presented. In its place, he suggests a narrative understanding of adoption. Core themes of identity, grief, mattering and trust, permeate these narratives and shape the experience of members of the constellation. As a passionate advocate for openness, Grand explores the psychological costs of denying identifying information to adopted individuals and their birth kin. Parallels are also drawn to an impending crisis as offspring of assisted reproduction seek answers to their identity questions. The book concludes with a consideration of alternative permanency arrangements and a primer for opening closed adoption records. This book will change how we approach adoption in all of its manifestations. Adoptees, birth and adoptive kin, social workers, clergy, teachers, therapists, and legislators alike will find meaning within these pages.

  • The Secure Base Model: Promoting attachment and resilience in foster care and adoption

All children need to feel secure in their relationships with the adults who look after them. Where children have not experienced the kind of sensitive parenting that promotes security and resilience, they will find it difficult to trust and will struggle with managing their feelings and behaviour. What strategies can be used to provide sensitive caregiving that develops secure close relationships? How can children be helped to recover from earlier harmful experiences and feel competent to face future challenges successfully and fulfil their potential? What can help children develop resilience, self-esteem and the capacity to reflect on their feelings and have a sense of hope for the future? Secure Base is a model of caregiving in fostering and adoption that is based on theories of attachment and resilience while also drawing on child placement research. It provides a valuable framework and a strengths-based approach for making sense of children s needs and behaviours and sets out the dimensions of caregiving that can support children to thrive and to fulfil their potential. This practical guide to the Secure Base is designed to support social workers and other professionals involved in all aspects of fostering and adoption practice, from recruitment, assessment and preparation to matching and long-term support for placements through to adulthood. It will enable workers to effectively promote attachment and resilience in foster care.

  • Attachment Handbook For Foster Care And Adoption;

Attachment is at the heart of family life and at the heart of foster care and adoption. Attachment theory and research provide a vital developmental framework for making sense of the behaviour and relationship strengths and difficulties that children bring from their complex backgrounds. This authoritative book – now in its second edition – provides an accessible account of core attachment concepts and the Secure Base model. It traces the pathways of secure and insecure patterns from birth to adulthood, exploring the impact of past experiences of abuse, neglect and separation on children’s behaviour in foster and adoptive families. It then explains the Secure Base dimensions of parenting that are associated with helping children to feel more secure and to fulfil their potential in the family and in the community. Finally, it tackles the key role which ‘keeping attachment in mind’ can play in family placement practice, and offers useful advice to carers on how they can provide a secure base.

  • Adoption Unfiltered: Revelations from Adoptees, Birth Parents, Adoptive Parents, and Allies

Reveals the candid thoughts and feelings of those most directly involved in adoptions: the adoptee, the adopters, and the birth parents.Adoption Unfiltered authors Sara Easterly (adoptee), Kelsey Vander Vliet Ranyard (birth parent), and Lori Holden (adoptive parent) interview more than 30 adoptees, 20 birth parents, a dozen adoptive parents, and several industry professionals―all sharing candidly about the challenges in adoption. While finding common ground in the sometimes-contentious space of adoption may seem like a lofty goal, it reveals the authors’ optimistic aim: working together with truth and transparency to move toward healing. Flipping the typical script, in which adoptive parents take the lion’s share of the narrative, this book leads with adoptee stories then moves on to stories of challenges and perspectives of birth parents―so often marginalized and silent. The third section offers narratives from adoptive parents who are working through their unique challenges. We also hear from adoption professionals, who share the challenges of operating ethically amid rampant unethical practices in the unregulated world of finding infants and children for homes. Finally, we hear from activists and adoption-competent therapists, offering their ideas to make adoption policies and practices better for all involved. Adoption is a beautiful experience but has challenges just like any other relationship or family system. The unique perspectives found here can help to smooth out the rough spots, celebrate the joys, and provide comfort and confirmation for everyone involved in the adoption journey.

  • 52 Modern Manners for Today’s Teens

THE ONLY THING HARDER THAN PARENTING A TEEN IS BEING A TEEN
THIS 52 WEEK CALENDAR OF CREATIVE AND CRUCIAL TIPS FOR TEENS WILL HELP BOTH PARENTS AND TEENAGERS NAVIGATE OUR MODERN WORLD WITH CONFIDENCE.
    A few useful tips you’ll find inside…

    NOTHING ONLINE IS PRIVATE
If you would not be ok with your parents, their parents, the entire school, or a future employer seeing or reading it, keep it to yourself. Nothing online ever really goes away, and in our digital world, nothing is private.

    KNOW YOURSELF
When someone asks what you like to do or what you are into, have an answer ready. There is no “right answer” to this question, but “I don’t know” or “nothing” is the wrong answer. You don’t have to be awesome at something to be interested in it. You don’t have to be on a team or in a club to have a hobby. What you love doesn’t have to be loved by everyone else. If you don’t know what to say, take some time to think about it. If no answer comes, try more things.

    DON’T LEAVE ONE PERSON OUT
Inviting all except one is cruel. Be someone who includes and makes room. If you have a problem with someone, talk to them; don’t just ghost them. Put yourself in that person’s shoes because chances are, you will be left out someday. Remember: there is always room for one more.

    RESPECT PEOPLE’S HOMES
Ask about their shoe policy. Never put your feet on furniture. Don’t lie on decorative pillows. Ask permission before eating. Keep your food and drinks in the kitchen. Stay in common areas and out of bedrooms. If you mess it up, clean it up. Keep your volume at an appropriate level. If you break something, take responsibility and replace it.

Some HCPs are more difficult than others, but they tend to share a similar preoccupation with blame that drives them into one dispute after another—and keeps everyone perplexed about how to deal with them.

Using case examples and an analysis of the general litigation and negotiation behaviors of HCPs, this book helps make sense of the fears that drive people to file lawsuits and complaints. It provides insight for containing their behavior while managing and/or resolving their disputes. Characteristics of the five “high-conflict” personality disorders are explored:

    BorderlineNarcissistic Histrionic ParanoidAntisocial

Bill Eddy is a lawyer, therapist, mediator, and President of the High Conflict Institute. He developed the “High Conflict Personality” theory and is an international expert on the subject. He is a Certified Family Law Specialist and Senior Family Mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center. He has taught at the University of San Diego School of Law, is on the part-time faculty of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law and the National Judicial College, and lectures at Monash University in Australia.

  • The Angry Mom’s Guide to Self-Regulation: A Mind-Body Approach to Managing Your Emotions

Few adults learned how to regulate their emotions as children, and therefore, few mothers enter into their new role with the skill of self-regulation. Those children have grown to become loving parents overwhelmed by dysregulated nervous systems, often finding themselves in a cycle of reactive behaviors, guilt and shame. In The Angry Mom’s Guide to Self-Regulation, Emilie provides mindful reflections and accessible action steps that help readers identify their individual triggers, increase body awareness, and create a personalized practice of nervous system regulation. • A Thriving Mind: A practical guide to developing resilience and positivity in young children

A Thriving Mind is a very practical guide to developing resilience, and positivity in young children, to prepare them for the challenges of life. It supports parents, teachers, mentors, coaches, and anyone working with young children, aged 2-8 years, in understanding and developing mental toughness, through exploring different dimensions of parenting.

The book contains a variety of very accessible, practical tools and development suggestions to support you in understanding and developing self-awareness, for yourself and your child. In conjunction with the remarkably well evidenced mental toughness concept, which explores how individual’s respond to events mentally, that (usually invisible) aspect of our personality.

The book addresses the issues commonly reported by parents, as being areas of concern or challenge in terms of understanding and supporting their children. These include dealing with children’s attitudes, psychological safety and emotional well-being, behaviours, peer relationships, co-regulation and escalation, as well as dealing with trauma, adversity and loss. It also responds to a demand from more enlightened educators, committed to providing a more holistic education, to those in their charge.

The contributing authors have brought together, their vast array of expertise and knowledge of early years development, to facilitate the learning and growth of parents, teachers and the like. Here we bring together their views, to present how these areas of concern relate to mental toughness, as well as how understanding your mental toughness as a parent, and your child’s, can help in addressing some of these issues.
