Human Infectious Disease and Public Health
Infectious disease will affect most of us at some point in our lives, despite tremendous advances in medicine over the past century. We all still fall ill from pathogens in our everyday environments – but many of us now survive infections which would have proved fatal in the past. Our understanding of the nature of infectious diseases continues to grow – as does our understanding of the human immune system. We continue to develop drugs and public health regimens to attempt to treat or prevent more and more diseases from causing acute sickness and/or long-term health problems – and indeed, we have been successful at eradicating (or almost eradicating) a number of previously common illnesses over the past fifty years. This text explores the structure and function of each distinct type of pathogen (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and prion disease), as well as the biochemical processes taking place when an infection is caused by any of these agents. It goes on to look at the role the human immune system plays in preventing, containing and destroying pathogens which enter the human body, using up to date research to ensure that students are abreast of the most recent developments in immunology. The text also examines the “evolutionary arms race” between human beings and infectious disease, looking at genetic traits which confer protection against some infectious diseases, and how pathogens are constantly changing to work around our defences.
The final section of the primer explores disease prevention and treatment – antibiotics, antivirals and antifungal agents and their mechanisms of action; public health and vaccination; the dangers of antibiotic resistance; and potential sources for new antimicrobial agents around the world.

Go Your Crohn Way: A Gutsy Guide to Living with Crohn’s Disease
For Kathleen Nicholls, life with Crohn’s disease has been a constant battle against her bowels. But life has also been about David Bowie, dancing, and laughter. Go Your Crohn Way follows the highs and lows of Kathleen’s experiences, and is full of useful advice for maintaining self-confidence and positivity while navigating the world of work, relationships, and those conversations.
Warm and inspiring, this book demonstrates how Crohn’s can be life-changing, but not just for the worse. Kathleen gives advice and tips on adapting and thriving through Crohn’s, including a specially created phrasebook, which proves that so long as you know how to ask for the nearest bathroom, globe-trotting is still firmly on the agenda.
Full of fun and humour, Kathleen’s journey through life with Crohn’s disease will leave you – like her – in stitches.

Parkinson’s Disease: An In-depth Metabolic Guide
Over the last ten years there has been a quantum leap in our understanding of the mechanisms which drive Parkinson’s disease. Frustratingly, this new research has not yet managed to infiltrate mainstream medical and public perceptions of the illness, where Parkinson’s disease is still seen purely as a dopamine deficiency condition. It is hoped that this book will give the reader an accessible insight into these exciting new discoveries.
What is becoming clear is that Parkinson’s disease is a complex multi-factorial disease where many ill-functioning aspects of health intersect leading to a failure of dopamine producing neurons. To seek a single cause amongst such complexity is likely to be futile but, hopefully, the themes in this book may help the reader to see the emergent patterns associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Ray Griffiths MSc is a Registered Nutritionist, Lecturer and Author and hails from the South of England. Ray’s lectures and books have focused on the role that mitochondria play in Parkinson’s disease, depression, ageing and inflammation. He has a background in engineering and likes to employ his engineering style thinking to help better understand complex health issues such as Parkinson’s disease.Read more

What Really Makes You Ill?: Why Everything You Thought You Knew About Disease Is Wrong
This book will explain what really makes you ill and why everything you thought you knew about disease is wrong. “Doctors are men who prescribe medicines of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, in human beings of whom they know nothing.” Voltaire. The conventional approach adopted by most healthcare systems entails the use of ‘medicine’ to treat human disease. The idea encapsulated by the above quote attributed to Voltaire, the nom de plume of François-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), will no doubt be regarded by most people as inapplicable to 21st century healthcare, especially the system known as modern medicine. The reason that people would consider this idea to no longer be relevant is likely to be based on the assumption that ‘medical science’ has made significant advances since the 18th century and that 21st century doctors therefore possess a thorough, if not quite complete, knowledge of medicines, diseases and the human body. Unfortunately, however, this would be a mistaken assumption; as this book will demonstrate.Read more

Huntington’s Disease Heroes: Inspiring Stories of Resilience from the HD Community (Lemonade Life Series)
These moving stories of real people affected by Huntington’s give a human face and voice to this dreadful illness, making the unimaginable imaginable and felt by the heart.
Lisa Genova, New York Times bestselling author of Inside the O’BriensWe often remark in life that “nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors,” but without first-hand stories like these, I don’t think we really understand the extent of that sentiment. I implore anyone to read HD Heroes.
George Rainsford, actor and patron for the Huntington’s Disease AssociationEssential reading for anyone affected by Huntington’s, whether carrier, caregiver, partner, or friend. Profoundly moving accounts by those with or at risk of inheriting this cruel disease.
Helen Pidd, author and North of England editor at the Guardian.I was truly brought to tears by the authors’ courage and fortitude in finding ways to deal with the hardships and create empowerment from the difficult road HD represents—it is motivational and inspirational for all of us to read.
Leslie M. Thompson, HD researcherHD Heroes invites the reader to become part of the HD team by having a better understanding of the impact of the disease on the real lives of those living it. The contributors here have shared their lives in a brave and open manner.
Mark Guttman MD, FRCPC neurologist and clinical researcher in HDHD Heroes is a moving, powerful, and remarkable collection of personal stories from people affected by HD in some way. Their stories must be read by anyone interested in learning more about what makes our HD family community so amazing.
Professor Sarah Tabrizi, HD doctor and scientistHuntington’s disease has been steeped in secrecy and fear for generations, leaving people in the community without a voice. This book changes that. Twenty-six people from nine countries bravely share their personal stories about living in the shadows of this disease. By doing so they are saying: Here I am. I will not be kept silent.
From a scientist who switched from cancer research to studying Huntington’s after finding out her mother had tested positive for the disease, to a young man whose biggest fear was testing gene negative and not inheriting the disease, to a woman who grew up in survival mode, unable to express her grief. We learn about the ways their lives are better off because of the hardships they have faced. By sharing these intimate parts of their lives, they are taking away the fear and stigma of living with HD in their families, and for that reason alone they are truly all HD heroes.
And when you read these stories, you will see that YOU are an HD hero too.
This book shares first-person stories from people who have tested gene positive, who have tested gene negative, or who have decided not to test, as well as stories from young carers, families living with juvenile HD, scientists, HD advocates, and more.
50% of the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to HDYO (Huntington’s Disease Youth Organization).

Crohn’s Disease – Living and Coping with it – Diary of an ‘Old Crohnie’
A book designed to encourage self-help for people with Crohn’s Disease, Colitis, and other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, by reflecting on a real-life journey of a person who has been through it and is now sharing their experience. This is a true-life account of the ups and downs, and my many different experiences and stories living with Crohn’s Disease. I’m writing them so they may be used as a self-help guide for both people who have possibly just been diagnosed and are searching through the minefield of information on the internet, or for people who have a friend or relative who has the condition and are looking for help how to understand it all, so they may give some support and empathy.
The book is intended to be written with a lighthearted tone, but will tell of good times, and also some bad times. You might find it to be brutally honest at times, but at the end of it, I want you to take the good things from it and learn to avoid the bad. Everybody has different symptoms and levels of sickness, so the aim of this book is for ‘All Crohnies’ to learn to cope a bit better, by reading somebody else’s story and knowing that you are not alone in this world.Read more

Natural Treatment Solutions for Hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease 3rd Edition
If you have hyperthyroidism, including Graves’ disease and toxic multinodular goiter, and are looking for a natural treatment solution to get to the underlying cause of your condition, then this book will show you how to restore your health naturally…and avoid radioactive iodine. The author of the book, Dr. Eric Osansky, was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease and restored his health back to normal after taking a natural treatment approach. Ever since then he has been helping other people with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease use natural thyroid treatment methods restore their health.By reading this book you will discover the following:

The Encyclopedia of Ailments and Diseases: How to Heal the Conflicted Feelings, Emotions, and Thoughts at the Root of Illness
A comprehensive reference and healing tool to address the emotional and psychological causes of illness• Uncovers the conflicted conscious or unconscious feelings, thoughts, and emotions at the root of nearly 900 ailments and diseases
• Details a unique Integration and Acceptance Technique for accessing information through the heart and thereby starting the healing process for emotions and feelings
• Provides positive affirmations to effect change for each ailment and disease
What if your body used a secret language to talk to you? What if an ailment or illness was your body’s way to shout for help, to make you understand that you need to change your thoughts, emotions, feelings, and behaviors? Your body wants you to become aware of the stress that you carry, conscious or not, so you can release unmanaged past and present emotions and the physical complaints that accompany them.
Compiling years of research and the results of thousands of cases he encountered in his private practice and during workshops over the past 30 years, Jacques Martel explains how to read and understand the body’s language of disease and imbalance. In this encyclopedia, he shows how body language reveals specific thoughts, feelings, and emotions that are at the source of nearly 900 different ailments and diseases. The author also details his Integration and Acceptance Technique, which enables healing information to bypass the brain and connect directly with the heart. This technique disables the source of the conflict, conscious or not, that could be at the root of an illness, behavior, or condition and improves the chances of true healing.
This comprehensive manual offers a tool to help each of us become, to some extent, our own doctor or therapist, get to know ourselves better, and recover health and well-being physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. For practitioners and therapists, this remarkable reference tool provides invaluable insights and prompts for healing.

The Marriage Handbook: Marriage in Islam: Before, During, and After (Islamic Handbooks)
All praise is for Allah alone, and may his choicest salutations, mercy and blessings be upon His Prophet Muḥammad.
This is a concise textbook summarizing key aspects of marriage in Islam.Marriage is a beautiful union that completes the individual and enables emotional, social and physical well-being. This union forms the basic building block that makes up the foundation of families, which form communities, which combine to create societies. When marriages are strong and healthy, societies thrive. Weak marriage relationships negatively impact emotional, social and economical state of individuals and communities, and this directly affects the success of children growing up in such conditions. Marriage is the way of the prophets, and a virtuous act. It safeguards dignity and virtue.
Islam supports and encourages marriage, and provides a detailed framework for approaching, enacting and maintaining marriage. The institution of marriage is described as a blessing: And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves spouses that you may find comfort with; and He created between you affection and mercy. Indeed in this are signs for a people who reflect (Q 30:21).This book
The text is brief and to the point, enriched with Qurʾānic verses and hadiths. The Qurʾānic verses are in green and hadiths are in blue. The aim of the book is not to explain every aspect of marriage, thus the students are encouraged, after grasping the information in this text, to consult with scholars and study larger works of fiqh for further and more technical discussions.

Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxiety and Depression: A Practical Guide for Practitioners and Parents
Tackling mental-emotional health problems in young people from a Chinese medicine perspective, this book shows how a child’s mental-emotional health is intrinsically connected with core elements of their everyday life. It suggests an approach to preventing and healing anxiety and depression that involves neither medication nor costs anything.
Part One of the book explains Chinese medicine concepts related to mental-emotional health in a way that is accessible for those with no prior knowledge. It includes chapters on how to recognise a child’s Five Element imbalance and how children of each element type need a different kind of nurture and lifestyle in order to remain mentally-emotionally healthy. Each chapter in Part Two examines a particular pillar of mental-emotional health such as connection, family life, emotions, and diet through a Chinese medicine lens. Each chapter is full of practical tips. Throughout, there is an emphasis on guiding parents and practitioners to discern what is right for a particular child, and that each child will need something different.
Addressing childhood anxiety and depression using a unique, accessible, and practical perspective, Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxiety and Depression is an invaluable book for practitioners and parents alike.

Inclusive Education for Autistic Children: Helping Children and Young People to Learn and Flourish in the Classroom
This book presents original, empirical research that reframes how educators should consider autism and educational inclusion. Rebecca Wood carefully unpicks common misapprehensions about autism and how autistic children learn, and reconsiders what inclusion can and should mean for autistic learners in school settings.
Drawing on research and interwoven with comments from autistic child and adult contributors throughout, the book argues that inclusion will only work if the ways in which autistic children think, learn, communicate and exhibit their understanding are valued and supported. Such an approach will benefit both the learner and the whole classroom. Considering topics such as the sensory environment, support, learning and cognition, school curriculums, communication and socialisation, this much needed book offers ideas and insight that reflect the practical side of day-to-day teaching and learning, and shows how thinking differently about autism and inclusion will equip teachers to effectively improve teaching conditions for the whole school.

Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health (Outspoken by Pluto)
‘A radical antidote to the constraints of our current conceptualisation of mental health’ Dazed
‘Exposes the underlying truth that capitalism is fundamentally incompatible with our wellbeing, and teaches us how to transform the ways we understand madness, illness, and disability to build a better world’ Beatrice Adler-Bolton, co-author of Health Communism
Mental health is a political issue, but we often discuss it as a personal one. How is the current mental health crisis connected to capitalism, racism and other social issues? In a different world, how might we transform the ways that we think about mental health, diagnosis and treatment?
These are some of the big questions Micha Frazer-Carroll asks as she reveals mental health to be an urgent political concern that needs deeper understanding beyond today’s ‘awareness-raising’ campaigns.
Exploring the history of asylums and psychiatry; the relationship between disability justice, queer liberation and mental health; art and creativity; prisons and abolition; and alternative models of care; Mad World is a radical and hopeful antidote to pathologisation, gatekeeping and the policing of imagination.
Micha Frazer-Carroll is a columnist at the Independent. Micha has written for Vogue, HuffPost, Huck, gal-dem and Dazed. She was nominated for the Comment Awards’ Fresh New Voice of the Year Award, and the Observer/Anthony Burgess Award for Arts Criticism.

Author Kate McGahan brings 35 years of clinical hospice and end-of-life care into this powerful and life-changing book. What will you do when I must leave? How do you prepare? An Introduction to Pet Bereavement Counselling
This is a must have reference book for anyone who supports or counsels others through pet bereavement. Dawn Murray has over two decades of experience in the field of pet bereavement and she worked at the heart of the industry as a pet undertaker. Pet carers throughout the world who have contacted her for support have found her unique style comforting and inspiring.
Due to demand from fellow counsellors, veterinary staff, psychologists and pet carers she has shared her experience, knowledge and understanding of pet bereavement. This is one of the most comprehensive books ever written about pet bereavement counselling, covering the broad range of topics related to pet loss that pet bereavement counsellors will encounter in the course of their work.
As a born animal lover and an author who’s written widely about animals at war, and the way in which their very presence serves to comfort soldiers in extremis, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The loss of a much loved pet – or military working dog – can be devastating. Dawn’s book does much to help those in need.
Damien Lewis, number one bestselling authorI have been fortunate enough to have had Dawn as a client for almost as long as I have been in practice and her influence has helped to shape the practitioner I am today. I am delighted that, through this book and her guidance, many others may benefit from her experience in this field.
David Gardner-Roberts BVSc PhD MRCVS, ARMAC Vets LtdWith years of experience in this area, and the knowledge and training combined, Dawn is one of the titans of the industry.
Carrie Kearns ACC Dip PBC, VCA, Cert Pet Bereavement BC, Adv Dip BCT, NLP Master PractitionerSo many don’t know where to turn and the support of a pet bereavement counsellor, such as Dawn, can help to navigate that grief with the dignity and hope that is needed with such a loss.
Lindsay Fyffe-Jardine, CEO Edinburgh Dog and Cat HomeThe book is superb and for anyone dealing with the loss of a pet then this book will help them to cope with all the emotions they face on a daily basis.
Mary Burges, Animal Star AwardsDawns’ experience is second to none and is further strengthened by a lifetime in the company of dogs (and the odd cat) and by having been a pet undertaker. She’s seen, and come across, pretty much everything and has utilised all this experience to create a comprehensive insight into what it takes to become a successful pet bereavement counsellor. Genuine warmth and empathy shine throughout the book along with some unexpected humour as well as heartbreak. Full of common sense and direction, I would thoroughly recommend it as a must read for existing or potential pet bereavement counsellors.

“Coping with the loss of a pet is an event that takes many people by surprise. Surprise at the level of grief they experience. Surprise that they can’t ‘just get over it’. Surprise that they may need to take time off work and surprise that other people just don’t seem to understand the depth of pain they are feeling. Dawn Murray has some wise words for anyone going through the trauma of pet loss and this is a book that will provide a lot of comfort for people at a time when they will most certainly need it.” – K9 Magazine – Ryan O’Meara & Accomplished Author
“As a Military Working Dog Handler, I have taken more than my fair share of loyal companions on their final journey. I have also done the same with pet animals. One thing I do know is that it never gets easier. I will often find one of my companions springing into my mind from nowhere. Sometimes happy memories, often sad. I have found Dawns’ book both insightful and taken some great tips to help both now and in the future. As one of the quotes states; ‘it’s your grief and yours alone’. Remember that in all walks of life.” – RAF Flight Lieutenant Michael ‘Will’ Barrow Author of Buster
”What a fantastic little book!!! The loss of a pet and ultimately a companion can be devastating and very traumatic. The book will help those who have suffered a loss understand the process of loss, bereavement and grieving. As Dawn states: ‘Loss, bereavement and grief are all part of our journey through life and although we have to face the journey alone, we can and do recover.’ This book will definitely help those who have lost a beloved pet understand the journey that they are going to go on, from loss to ultimately acceptance” – Dr Peter Du Toit

Losing My Best Friend: Thoughtful support for those affected by dog bereavement or pet loss
“Remember me with tears and laughter. Remember me though it hurts to do so, because the pain you have is equal to the love we shared. There is no goodbye if you carry me in your heart. Remember all the joy we shared, because there was so much of it for both of us.” Herbie Longfellow Alderdice
Are you a dog owner who is in the process of losing your best friend to illness? Or have you lost your beloved pet and you’re struggling to get over them?
Pet bereavement is tough. Not everyone can, or will, sympathise with you.
After losing her beloved boy Herbie, Jeannie Wycherley found herself lost in grief, struggling to find her way through it.
Too many friends and acquaintances told her she’d ‘get over it’ because he was ‘just a dog’ however, to Jeannie, Herbie was so much more than that. A loving companion. A soulmate. A true character. Her best friend.
She found that the more she articulated her feelings around other pet owners, the more she came to understand just how many of those people had been similarly locked deep in secret mourning for a furry friend. Feelings of guilt, overwhelm, exhaustion—even shame—were common.
And so, she wrote about her experiences. The result, Losing my Best Friend: Thoughtful Support for those Affected by Dog Bereavement or Pet Loss offers practical advice about what to do when your pet passes away, including tips on helping your children or other pets cope with the loss, designing your own ceremony to celebrate your dog’s life, and creating memorials.
In these pages Jeannie Wycherley has created a loving tribute to Herbie and delivers support with a light and loving touch that aims to validate the feelings you’re experiencing.

The Grief Recovery Handbook for Pet Loss
Your relationship with your pet is special—it’s a bond that is very different than those that human beings share with each other. When a beloved pet passes away, people often resort to incorrect mechanisms to deal with the grief, such as trying to move too quickly past the loss (dismissing the real impact), or even attempting to replace the pet immediately. However, these are merely two myths out of six that the authors discuss and dismantle in The Grief Recovery Handbook for Pet Loss. Based on the authors’ Grief Recovery Method®, this book addresses the differences in losing a pet, and ultimately, moving on with life.Read more
