  • Ad Law: The Essential Guide to Advertising Law and Regulation

    01

Ensuring marketers and advertisers are aware of the laws and regulations of advertising is now more important than ever. If a campaign is found to be potentially offensive, harmful, or misleading, it can ‘go viral’ in just the click of a mouse, and the implications of breaching those laws are likely to be both damaging and costly to a brand’s reputation, its creative work, and the strategic planning behind it.

Now offering level-headed advice on everyday questions encountered when designing and running promotional campaigns, Ad Law, the new book from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), is the ultimate handbook to the law and regulation of advertising and marketing communications. Containing guidance based on real-world experiences from media and advertising lawyers and the IPA legal team, this book expertly leads readers through the most applicable laws and regulations, common pitfalls and the practicalities behind them, such as the new industry-standard client/agency agreement.

Covering issues such as intellectual property, privacy and defamation, plus the self-regulatory framework, Ad Law is the ideal companion for any advertising and marketing professional, or lawyer working within these sectors.

  • Boring Car Trivia 4

    01
Sometimes it can be hard to find the answers to life’s biggest questions. Questions such as, who designed the BMW M logo? Why were Jaguar engineers continually crashing Honda S2000s? How was the Vauxhall design studio ruined by poo? And which car almost caused great embarrassment for Spandau Ballet? Thankfully, this book is here to help, providing the answers to these and hundreds of other questions.
This is the fourth instalment in a long-running franchise everyone hoped would have stopped by now. Sort of like Jaws 4, except it doesn’t have Michael Caine in it. But it does contain a brief mention of Alicia Vikander. And Ron Dennis. Not together, obviously.

  • Life in the Victorian Hospital

    02

Throughout the Victorian period, life-threatening diseases were no respecter of class, affecting rich and poor alike. However, the medical treatment for such diseases differed significantly, depending on the class of patient. The wealthy received private medical treatment at home or, later, in a practitioner’s consulting room. The middle classes might also pay for their treatment but, in addition, they could attend one of an increasing number of specialist hospitals. The working classes could get free treatment from charitable voluntary hospitals or dispensaries. For the abject poor who were receiving poor relief, their only option was to seek treatment at the workhouse infirmary. The experience of a patient going into hospital at this time was vastly different from that at the end. This was not just in terms of being attended by trained nurses or in the medical and surgical advances which had taken place. Different methods for treating diseases and the use of antiseptic and aseptic techniques to combat killer hospital infections led to a much higher standard of care than was previously available.

  • London’s Transport From Roman Times to the Present Day

    01
Transport systems are the lifeblood of all great cities and this is certainly true of London. As far back as Roman times, their city Londinium was the hub of a network of roads leading out to all the major centres of the time. It was the Romans who gave the city its first bridge across the Thames and its first paved roadways. This book tells the story of London’s roads and bridges and the vehicles that used them. For centuries, transport meant horse drawn vehicles, from lumbering waggons to elegant carriages and the city had a flourishing industry, building carriages. The Industrial Revolution brought major changes, not least in the construction of more and more bridges over the Thames. In the 19th century a new system appeared with the arrival of the railways, and the many stations that are such prominent features of the cityscape. The story continues into the 20th century, when, for a time, the city was also home to some pioneering motor car manufacturers, such as Vauxhall. It comes nearer our time with the construction of the underground railway and the driverless trains of the Dockland Light Railway. Londoners will have a chance to find out just how travel around the city has changed in the last two thousand years.

  • Maritime Safety in Europe: A Comparative Approach (Maritime and Transport Law Library)

The book is concerned with the harmonisation of maritime safety legal systems in Europe. It describes maritime safety legal systems in selected European countries as well as maritime safety issues from the perspective of the International Maritime Organisation, European Union, and European Free Trade Association. Distinguished scholars from Europe’s leading maritime law academic centres present national perspectives of maritime safety systems, questioning whether the adopted national solutions guarantee the compatibility with IMO and EU legal regime, as well as assessing the global and EU system. Moreover, the book seeks to provide some answers as to whether the IMO goals on maritime safety are adequate in light of current safety challenges and how to achieve higher level of enforcement of internationally-recognised maritime safety standards. It will be of great assistance to those readers who need to familiarize themselves with current problems inherent in maritime safety, whether that be lawyers, scholars, professional mariners, or national institutions.

  • Middle Waters: A Trawlerman’s Tale

In this book, ‘Middle Waters’, Bosun Ron Telford tells true tales of when the only place Grimsby fishermen were allowed to catch any fish was the Shetland and Orkney Islands. A few boats did have quotas to fish around the Faroe Islands but this did not last long.
The boats that were left after the Deep-Water Industry collapsed, were called ‘Cat’ boats. They had smaller crews and shorter trips to sea. The work was still as dangerous, with the crews working long hours, having little sleep and then home again. After seventy-two hours in dock, sailing again, hoping to earn a good living from the sea.
These are my stories and I tell of the many sacrifices we endured by not seeing our children grow up or spending time with our loved ones. Now I am retired from the sea I enjoy spending time with our grandchildren and great grandchildren and I realise how much I missed of my own children. I am extremely proud of them all. I currently work at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, as a Tour Guide on the Ross Tiger. Working here has helped me recall my working days as a trawlerman, telling the general public, first hand, my experiences of my time at sea. I get so much pleasure from seeing their faces as I recall my days as a trawlerman and the hardships endured to put fish on the table and earn a living.

  • Principles of International Energy Transition Law

Energy transition is a complex global problem, with governance and policies cutting across multiple legal silos including human rights, environment, international economics, finance, energy, law of the sea, and transnational commerce. As of yet, there is no comprehensive treatment of the legal principles governing energy transition as a whole. Furthermore, energy transition must solve a trilemma that pits energy equity (the need to provide access to energy needed to
fuel human development) and energy security (the need to provide resilient and reliable energy systems) against environmental sustainability. Without a comprehensive understanding of these issues, law and policy-makers risk exacerbating rather than resolving the underlying problems.

Principles of International Energy Transition Law introduces the energy transition problem by situating the climate emergency in its broader energy and development context, showing how global energy value chains are deeply enmeshed in and drive global economic and human development. It combines the different legal perspectives in one consistent analysis by outlining their interactions and showing how they can be reconciled. The book discusses thirty-two international legal principles
governing different aspects of the energy transition trilemma’s three parts. It then uses a commons governance perspective to propose a holistic approach to applying and balancing these different parts and their different legal principles.

Highlighted sections summarise the most important concepts and ideas for easy reference, making the title particularly accessible for students and policy-makers as well as law practitioners.

  • Sovereignty, International Law, and the Princely States of Colonial South Asia (The History and Theory of International Law)

What constitutes a sovereign state in the international legal sphere? This question has been central to international law for centuries. Sovereignty, International Law, and the Princely States of Colonial South Asia provides a compelling exploration of the history of sovereignty through an analysis of the jurisdictional politics involving a specific set of historical legal entities.

Governed by local rulers, the princely states of colonial South Asia were subject to British paramountcy whilst remaining legally distinct from directly ruled British India. Their legal status and the extent of their rights remained the subject of feverish debates through the entirety of British colonial rule. This book traces the ways in which the language of sovereignty shaped the discourse surrounding the legal status of the princely states to illustrate how the doctrine of sovereignty came
to structure political imagination in colonial South Asia and the framework of the modern Indian state.

Opening with a survey of the place of the princely states in the colonial structures of South Asia, Sovereignty, International Law, and the Princely States of Colonial South Asia goes on to illustrate how international lawyers, British politicians, colonial officials, rulers and bureaucrats of princely states, and anti-colonial nationalists in British India used definitions of sovereignty to construct political orders in line with their interests and aspirations. By invoking the
vernacular of sovereignty in contrasting ways to support their differing visions of imperial and world order, these actors also attempted to reconfigure the boundaries among the spheres of the national, the imperial, and the international. Throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries,
debates and disputes over the princely states continually defined and redefined the concept of sovereignty and international legitimacy in South Asia.

Using rich material from the colonial archives,Sovereignty, International Law, and the Princely States of Colonial South Asia conveys an understanding of the history of sovereignty and the construction of the modern Indian nation-state that is still relevant today. A riveting read, this book will be of considerable interest and importance to scholars of international law and South Asia, legal historians, and political scientists.

  • The Great American Drug Deal: A New Prescription for Innovative and Affordable Medicines

    01
Developing life-changing drugs is risky and expensive—but that’s not what makes them unaffordable.

Drug pricing is a staple of every news cycle and political debate. And while we’ve struggled for decades to agree on solutions that serve all patients without jeopardizing the invention of new medicines, many Americans suffer because they can’t afford the drugs they need.

Do we really have to choose between affordability and innovation?

In The Great American Drug Deal, scientist and industry expert Peter Kolchinsky answers this question with a decisive No. The pharmaceutical industry’s commitment to creating new lifesaving drugs destined to become inexpensive generics can be balanced by the healthcare system’s commitment to making those drugs affordable for all patients—a Biotech Social Contract. Through deep research and compelling stories of breakthroughs and breakdowns, Kolchinsky presents solutions for striking a balance that are bold yet realistic and tackle today’s most pressing questions, including:

Why doesn’t insurance make drugs affordable?
How can we prevent price-jacking of older drugs?
Why are drugs more expensive in America than elsewhere?
How can we guarantee that all medicines eventually go generic so they are only temporarily expensive?
What systemic failures led to the opioid crisis, and how can we prevent the next one?

The Great American Drug Deal offers clear-eyed scrutiny of all players in the industry and examines vital ideas for closing loopholes, encouraging investment, dealing with bad actors, and educating consumers. It’s time we resolve to support patients and fuel discoveries that ease suffering now and for generations to come.

    • The International Legal Order’s Colour Line: Racism, Racial Discrimination, and the Making of International Law

Prior to the twentieth century, international law was predominantly written by and for the ‘civilised nations’ of the white Global North. It justified doctrines of racial inequality and effectively drew a colour line that excluded citizens of the Global South and persons of African descent from participating in international law-making while subjecting them to colonialism and the slave trade.

The International Legal Order’s Colour Line narrates this divide and charts the development of regulation on racism and racial discrimination at the international level, principally within the United Nations. Most notably, it outlines how these themes gained traction once the Global South gained more participation in international law-making after the First World War. It challenges the narrative that human rights are a creation of the Global North by focussing on the decisive contributions that countries of the Global South and people of colour made to anchor anti-racism in international law.

After assessing early historical developments, chapters are devoted to The League of Nations, the adoption and implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the debates within UNESCO on the notion of race itself, expansion of crimes against humanity to cover peacetime violations, as well as challenges to apartheid in South Africa. At all stages, the focus lies on the role played by those who have been the victims of racial discrimination, primarily the countries of the Global South, in advancing the debate and promoting the development of new legal rules and institutions for their implementation. The International Legal Order’s Colour Line provides a comprehensive history and compelling new approach to the history of human rights law.

    • The Perfect Transport: and the science of why you can’t have it

      03
What has the prisoner’s dilemma got to do with road traffic? Could we replace our trains with rollercoasters? Would putting spikes on steering wheels decrease road collisions? These questions (and a bunch of others) will be explored, introducing you to some basic concepts of transport science. A variety of thought experiments will be subjected to the limits of physics, engineering, economics, and psychology. This will show why the transport we already have is in fact an immense success!

Transport is a sector that affects the everyday life of most people and needs to be continually funded, reviewed and improved to sustain civilisation. This book will arm you with the tools needed to tear political propaganda to pieces as politicians push for transport solutions based on ideology rather than facts.
