• Eric Bottomley’s Transport Gallery: A Journey Across the Canvas

    01
This is Eric Bottomley’s second art book, in which he has varied both his transport themes and the mediums in which he works. The majority of paintings are in oils but also included are gouache (watercolor) and pencil sketches. However, some paintings are both gouache and pencil, together known as mixed media.Railways have always been a great passion of Eric’s, from trainspotting around the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire system as a boy, to painting commisions for customers both private and commercial. From his lowly studio in Wimborne, Dorset, where his painting career took off, Eric never envisaged that one day he would witness his paintings being presented to the Duke of Kent, or that he would meet the Duke of Gloucester (a fellow railway enthusiast). In 1979 he joined the Guild of Railway Artists, and later became a full member.Included in this book are all four regions of Britain’s railway, but mostly the BR period from 1948, to the end of steam in 1968. Added to this are such scenes as the Trans-Siberian Express in Moscow, The Golfers Express leaving Belfast and preserved diesels in the USA.The sad demise of steam and dereliction of the canals in the 1960s, and the amazing restoration projects over the years, has provided Eric with an enormous scope of subject matter, much of which is captured in this compelling book.

  • Variable Valve Timings: Memoirs of a car tragic

    08

‘What defines the car-saddo condition is not being able to recall a time when the toy-car-era of your life actually ended. Because for us sufferers, it never does.’

Nobody knows cars like Chris Harris does. He calls it ‘unhinged geekery’, but the rest of the world call it infectious enthusiasm, adrenalin fuelled escapism and rigorous journalistic integrity.

And then there are his famous skills at the wheel, from city cars to rally cars, not forgetting the Guinness World Record 3.4km sideways in an electric car.

And now for the first time, Harris takes us down the road of his life-long obssession with the automobile – along surprising diversions, around hazards and obstructions, down the fast lane collecting Gs and back to the lock-up to prep the stock.

From the six-year-old who could recite the stats from What Car? magazine to the YouTube car guru whose honest reviews got him banned by Ferrari. From the Scalextric track of his childhood, to podiums as a racing driver out in the world. From behind his garage doors to the floodlit Top Gear studio.

Variable Valve Timings brings you an incredibly engaging story of adventure and petrolhead joy, told with wit, warmth and disarming honesty. This book is a true one-off, just like Chris.

  • Merseyside Transport: The 1950s–1970s (Transport System Series Book 1)

Merseyside can claim, with some justification, to have provided the transport enthusiast with a greater variety of transport modes than anywhere else in Britain. By the 1950s, with many long-standing scenes about to disappear, photographers began faithfully to record what they saw in color. It is these images, including road, rail, sea and other modes of transport, that illustrate this nostalgic pictorial portrait of key aspects of the richly varied scene. Taking the reader on a journey from Liverpool and its suburbs to Birkenhead and Wallasey, with one small detour to include views of the remarkable Runcorn Transporter Bridge, this book gives a full-color view of the historic transport that was part of the Merseyside townscape from the 1950s to the 1970s.

  • Little London Transport: Network SouthEast 30th Anniversary Special Edition: Volume 1

    03
A collaborative photographic history in model form with a little type and model history added too. This originally started as a project to create a photo book of my model Bus and Railway collection. I then started to seek help from some other model photographers on the photo sharing website Flickr. Before I knew it we had more people on board and an extensive collection was starting to build including some rare types and starting to detail the history of these vehicles types in model form. This is the first book in the series, soon to follow are further editions detailing London’s Buses, Trains, Trams, Trolleybuses and Tubes. As Network SouthEast has always been one of my favourite railway operators I thought I would release a special NSE edition first to celebrate 30 years since it’s inception. NSE was created when I was a small child and the trains were noticeably much more brighter than the grey and blue units that came before and became an obvious choice when I started a model railway a few years ago (to be detailed further in a later book). NSE really was something very different from what had gone before with bright colours of its trains, red all over it’s stations and a real effort to improve its trains and services thanks to the idea created and implemented by Chris Green. This book contains over 90 colour photos with a description displaying Network SouthEast models in a realistic scene with a little history info too. Release history Version 1.0 – 11th October 2016 Version 1.1 – 13th October 2016 Small amendment to details of Dapol and Heljan Class 86 Version 1.2 – 17th October 2016 A further photo of 47401 with a rake of NSE coaches added Version 1.3 – 21st November 2016 13 photos added by Andy Carter and a further 5 photos added by Jonathan Francis

  • London Transport Buses in East London and Essex: The 1960s and 1970s

    08
Starting at London City’s eastern terminus, Aldgate, this book begins with the red central bus routes radiating out to Essex, featured together with the Green Line coach services. Hackney, Clapton, Poplar, Bow and Stratford make up East London proper, with Barking, Ilford and Chadwell Heath forming the second ‘wave’. We then come into Essex with Romford, Hainault and then up to Epping. Hornchurch, Rainham and Gidea Park follow, with the outer limits at Upminster and Brentwood. Born in Romford, Essex, in 1943, David Christie started colour photography of railways in 1962 to capture the last days of steam. It wasn’t until 1967 that he realised that he should be doing likewise for his local buses and in particular his favourite – the London RT. So began several years of recording not only local routes, but also those of East London. Primarily featuring images from the late 1960s and early 1970s, the author offers a fascinating view of a golden age of transport in and around the capital, with a variety of buses on show.

  • Signs Make Sense: A Guide to British Sign Language (Human horizons series)

    08
Interest in British Sign Language (BSL) is growing at a fantastic rate, and classes for hearing people are mushrooming all over the country. This lively introduction to the principles of the language and its vocabulary will therefore be widely welcomed, giving a vivid insight into a form of communication that can appear difficult for those whose first language is English. As the author takes pains to stress, BSL is not a mimed version of English. Equally rich and complex, it is visual, gestural and spatial, able to convey information and subtleties of meaning as fluently as any spoken language. Once learners have ceased to think in terms of individual words, they will come to revel in a language that involves the whole person: facial and bodily expression and movement, eye contact and gaze, lip pattern and the fluid movements of the signs themselves, all combining to form an integrated language system with rules of its own. Using detailed drawings throughout to illustrate nuances of meaning, the author groups the signs according to type, introducing each theme and showing how facial expressions, hand and finger movements and placements are used and combined to vary the sense of what is being communicated. Her aim is to equip the reader with a basic understanding of the principles of sign language and a working knowledge of its vocabulary. In an ideal world BSL would be part of every school’s curriculum, whether the pupils were deaf or not, thus giving deaf people the status in society which is their right. Meanwhile, this book will make an important contribution to the growing interest in learning the language, so that more and more people will appreciate that signs really do make sense.

  • The British Transport Police: An Illustrated History

    08
The British Transport Police has the most diverse history of any police force in the world. It can trace its origins back to 1826, and is made up from over 240 railway, dock and canal forces. Early railway companies maintained their own police forces, but following the First World War these smaller companies were amalgamated into four large companies. In 1948 following the nationalisation of the transport infrastructure the force took responsibility for policing the railways, ports and canals as the British Transport Commission Police, the first national police force in the United Kingdom. The BTC was dissolved in 1963 but the force remained as the British Transport Police. From the beginning the force has been at the forefront of policing innovation such as being the first force to use dogs, employing women as uniformed officers, the introduction of a computerised crime reporting procedure and the first to use technology to arrest a murder suspect. Although diminished in size and areas of responsibility since privatisation of the UK transport infrastructure, the force has moved with the demands of modern policing. This book is an illustrated history of this unique force working to keep the travelling public safe.

Best known for founding international haulier Trans UK, Bob Carter was involved in the groundbreaking changes occurring in British transport of the ’60s and ’70s. Beginning in the army, where he witnessed nuclear testing on Christmas Island in the 1950s, Carter went on to be a driver, office worker, and, finally, company owner.

Never afraid to get his hands dirty, Bob was able to turn his hand to any aspect of his business operation, from repairing mechanical defects to operating forklifts and driving his own trucks. In 1975, he set out on Trans UK’s maiden run to Iran in his Humber Sceptre with four of his trucks in convoy—the first trip of many for the company.

The denationalization of BRS and the implementation of the ‘O’ licence, the rapid growth of privately owned haulage companies, combined with the Middle East oil boom of the ’70s, all helped Bob to develop a successful British and international transport operation.

Including nearly 300 previously unpublished photos, You Call, We Haul is an inspirational story which will appeal to those with an interest in the heyday of Middle East travel, and those with a general love of great British transport companies.

  • Superstox and Stock Cars: The Golden Years

    08

The golden years of oval racing were arguably the 1970s when the sport went though its’ most rapid development and enjoyed its biggest following. The stock car formula had evolved considerably from the original version launched in 1954. Contstant development and modification over the years meant that the cars looked nothing like the original road going versions and so the Spedeworth promotion renamed their main class ‘Superstox’ and introduced a new formula closer to the original idea bearing the original name of stock cars.

Whilst hot rod racing provided a pure form of motor racing with no contact between cars allowed it was the Superstox and stock car formulae that continued to provide the ‘crash and bash’ that many race fans flocked to see. Although essentially an amatuer sport both the Superstox and stock cars contested international championships and test matches which were attended by huge crowds.

Superstox and stock cars have evolved even further since the 1970s, but captured here in over 200 photographs are the cars, drivers and the circuits from those golden years of racing.

  • Buses: Another Life

    01
What happens to old buses at the end of their career, when they are replaced by newer vehicles? Some inevitably go to scrap, especially if they have been cannibalised for spares. Some see further service with other bus companies. A few lucky ones pass directly into preservation. But many find further employment with so-called ‘Non-PSV’ users; some of these may continue to carry passengers, perhaps as works transport or for a community group. Some may be used for driver training. However, others will be converted to fulfil a whole variety of roles – catering or hospitality vehicles; advertising promotional vehicles; ambulances; mobile homes; playbuses; horseboxes; vehicle transporters, and more. This book looks at a variety of old buses and coaches and the varied roles they have fulfilled over the last fifty years.

  • Dundee’s Trams and Buses

    08
The Dundee & District Tramways Company began operating a service using a horse tram on 30 August 1877. In 1885, steam traction was introduced, and between 1900 and 1902 the system was electrified, reaching as far as Broughty Ferry and Monifeith at its height. In 1899 the company had become Dundee City Tramways, and in October 1956 the tram system was closed; all the services were now run using the motor buses, which had originally been introduced in 1922. Dundee Corporation Transport and its successors have run the buses in the city ever since. In this book, transport historian Walter Burt looks at the trams and buses used by these companies, and tells the story of transport in Dundee through the vehicles that used to work its streets in a collection of images that will bring back memories of Dundee from times past.
