Flight Failure: Investigating the Nuts and Bolts of Air Disasters and Aviation Safety
A former aircraft engineer exposes the dangerous breakdown in airline safety due to lapses in maintenance and quality control. This book chronicles maintenance-related accidents caused by individual, corporate, or governmental negligence and brings the industry’s current state of affairs into sharp focus. The author, a former aviation engineer, examines how failures of the smallest of parts have brought down airliners, explaining sometimes esoteric mechanical issues for readers with no technical background. Vividly describing the terror of accidents and close calls, the author then follows the painstaking investigations to determine causes. He focuses on maintenance errors, which rank as one of the top three causes of airline accidents, and points to the factors that have led to an alarming situation– continued reduction of licensed mechanics, the shutting down of maintenance bases in the United States, and the outsourcing of maintenance to lowballing contractors. Outsourcing has forced thousands of licensed mechanics into retirement or different careers. For those mechanics still employed in the United States, the ever-present threat to their jobs does nothing to cultivate loyalty to an employer and devotion to a task. The Federal Aviation Administration, which should be overseeing quality control, is caught in a conflicted dual role–charged with regulating safety on the one hand and assuring the fiscal stability of airlines on the other. This disturbing wakeup call for improved airline safety standards highlights the critical importance of attention to detail. Porter recommends that the numbers and job security of airline mechanics be increased and that they be vested with an authority level akin to medical professionals.Read more

Little London Transport: Network SouthEast 30th Anniversary Special Edition: Volume 1
A collaborative photographic history in model form with a little type and model history added too. This originally started as a project to create a photo book of my model Bus and Railway collection. I then started to seek help from some other model photographers on the photo sharing website Flickr. Before I knew it we had more people on board and an extensive collection was starting to build including some rare types and starting to detail the history of these vehicles types in model form. This is the first book in the series, soon to follow are further editions detailing London’s Buses, Trains, Trams, Trolleybuses and Tubes. As Network SouthEast has always been one of my favourite railway operators I thought I would release a special NSE edition first to celebrate 30 years since it’s inception. NSE was created when I was a small child and the trains were noticeably much more brighter than the grey and blue units that came before and became an obvious choice when I started a model railway a few years ago (to be detailed further in a later book). NSE really was something very different from what had gone before with bright colours of its trains, red all over it’s stations and a real effort to improve its trains and services thanks to the idea created and implemented by Chris Green. This book contains over 90 colour photos with a description displaying Network SouthEast models in a realistic scene with a little history info too. Release history Version 1.0 – 11th October 2016 Version 1.1 – 13th October 2016 Small amendment to details of Dapol and Heljan Class 86 Version 1.2 – 17th October 2016 A further photo of 47401 with a rake of NSE coaches added Version 1.3 – 21st November 2016 13 photos added by Andy Carter and a further 5 photos added by Jonathan FrancisRead more

Dundee’s Trams and Buses
The Dundee & District Tramways Company began operating a service using a horse tram on 30 August 1877. In 1885, steam traction was introduced, and between 1900 and 1902 the system was electrified, reaching as far as Broughty Ferry and Monifeith at its height. In 1899 the company had become Dundee City Tramways, and in October 1956 the tram system was closed; all the services were now run using the motor buses, which had originally been introduced in 1922. Dundee Corporation Transport and its successors have run the buses in the city ever since. In this book, transport historian Walter Burt looks at the trams and buses used by these companies, and tells the story of transport in Dundee through the vehicles that used to work its streets in a collection of images that will bring back memories of Dundee from times past.Read more

The British Transport Police: An Illustrated History
The British Transport Police has the most diverse history of any police force in the world. It can trace its origins back to 1826, and is made up from over 240 railway, dock and canal forces. Early railway companies maintained their own police forces, but following the First World War these smaller companies were amalgamated into four large companies. In 1948 following the nationalisation of the transport infrastructure the force took responsibility for policing the railways, ports and canals as the British Transport Commission Police, the first national police force in the United Kingdom. The BTC was dissolved in 1963 but the force remained as the British Transport Police. From the beginning the force has been at the forefront of policing innovation such as being the first force to use dogs, employing women as uniformed officers, the introduction of a computerised crime reporting procedure and the first to use technology to arrest a murder suspect. Although diminished in size and areas of responsibility since privatisation of the UK transport infrastructure, the force has moved with the demands of modern policing. This book is an illustrated history of this unique force working to keep the travelling public safe.Read more

London Transport Buses in East London and Essex: The 1960s and 1970s
Starting at London City’s eastern terminus, Aldgate, this book begins with the red central bus routes radiating out to Essex, featured together with the Green Line coach services. Hackney, Clapton, Poplar, Bow and Stratford make up East London proper, with Barking, Ilford and Chadwell Heath forming the second ‘wave’. We then come into Essex with Romford, Hainault and then up to Epping. Hornchurch, Rainham and Gidea Park follow, with the outer limits at Upminster and Brentwood. Born in Romford, Essex, in 1943, David Christie started colour photography of railways in 1962 to capture the last days of steam. It wasn’t until 1967 that he realised that he should be doing likewise for his local buses and in particular his favourite – the London RT. So began several years of recording not only local routes, but also those of East London. Primarily featuring images from the late 1960s and early 1970s, the author offers a fascinating view of a golden age of transport in and around the capital, with a variety of buses on show.Read more

Merseyside Transport: The 1950s–1970s (Transport System Series Book 1)
Merseyside can claim, with some justification, to have provided the transport enthusiast with a greater variety of transport modes than anywhere else in Britain. By the 1950s, with many long-standing scenes about to disappear, photographers began faithfully to record what they saw in color. It is these images, including road, rail, sea and other modes of transport, that illustrate this nostalgic pictorial portrait of key aspects of the richly varied scene. Taking the reader on a journey from Liverpool and its suburbs to Birkenhead and Wallasey, with one small detour to include views of the remarkable Runcorn Transporter Bridge, this book gives a full-color view of the historic transport that was part of the Merseyside townscape from the 1950s to the 1970s.Read more

London Transport 1970-84 (Britain’s Buses Series)
In 1970, around 3,000 RTs were still in service in the UK’s capital. However, by 1984, transport in London was changing beyond recognition and would continue to do so as a result of tendering and devolution. London Transport 1970-84 covers the gently declining years of London’s bus operations, during which the venerable RT and Routemaster types were compelled to give way to ambitious modern buses like the Merlins, Swifts and DMSs. These enjoyed less success, however, and their time in London was short, affording the Routemasters a reprieve that would last for two and a half further decades. In this book, 120 stunning color images from the camera of noted bus and railway photographer R. C. Riley are accompanied by detailed and informative captions, giving the full picture of this time of huge change. AUTHOR: Matthew Wharmby is an author, photographer and editor who specialises in London bus history. 120 illustrationsRead more

Transport Operator Licensing: A Practical Guide for Goods and Passenger Operators
Transport Operator Licensing takes operators through the whole process of licensing, looking at when licences are required, giving advice on applying for such licences, describing the undertakings that form part of the application, the systems that should be put in place to stay within the undertakings, as well as illustrating what happens when difficulties arise and how to deal with them. Whilst there are books that cover this briefly, for example one chapter in the FTA year book, or online guides, there is nothing more comprehensive to help operators and applicants in this area. This book will plug the gap, as it will provide a tool which operators and those practising in the area can use to find out what is happening and how to deal with it.
Transport Operator Licensing is simply and clearly written, so that it can be easily followed by both operators and transport managers without any legal knowledge. There are multiple examples within the text to consolidate understanding of the topic. Appendices contain sample application forms with useful tips and advice on how to fill them in.

Buses: Another Life
What happens to old buses at the end of their career, when they are replaced by newer vehicles? Some inevitably go to scrap, especially if they have been cannibalised for spares. Some see further service with other bus companies. A few lucky ones pass directly into preservation. But many find further employment with so-called ‘Non-PSV’ users; some of these may continue to carry passengers, perhaps as works transport or for a community group. Some may be used for driver training. However, others will be converted to fulfil a whole variety of roles – catering or hospitality vehicles; advertising promotional vehicles; ambulances; mobile homes; playbuses; horseboxes; vehicle transporters, and more. This book looks at a variety of old buses and coaches and the varied roles they have fulfilled over the last fifty years.Read more

London Bus Routes One by One: 201-300 (Transport Systems Series)
Following on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100 and London Bus Routes One By One: 101-200, this third volume in the series explores what used to be the old London Transport’s highest-numbered block of routes. These numbers were once reserved for single-deck services, but the weight of post-war expansion soon filled in the sequence. As in previous volumes, a potted history of each route is accompanied by a list of points served and one or two pictures of the kind of bus that can be found in service today. The pace of tendering and Transport for London’s imperative towards emissions-free propulsion has meant increasingly rapid turnover of bus models, which are expected to last the length of two full-term contracts of seven years before replacement. Illustrated with over 190 color photographs, this volume represents an up-to-date snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene as it stands in autumn 2021.Read more

The Regulation of Air Transport: From Protection to Liberalisation, and Back Again (Managing Aviation Operations)
The regulation of modern civil aviation can be traced back to the later years of the Second World War. An intense debate about the future regulatory regime resulted in a compromise which to this day essentially dictates the structure of the global airline industry. Further progress towards ‘normalising’ the industry appears to be slowing down, and perhaps even going into reverse. Without an understanding of the development of regulation, it is not possible to understand fully the industry’s current problems and how they might be resolved.
Many books have been written about the development of international air transport, covering deregulation, privatisation, the emergence of new business models among other things, but few if any have taken a broad view of the trends which have determined the industry’s current structure. The Regulation of Air Transport charts the development of aviation from the end of the Second World War to the present day, following the key trends and disruptive forces. It provides an overview of what has determined the industry’s current structure, the problems still facing the industry and the ways in which it could develop in the future.
This wide-ranging study is important reading for both professionals and academics within the aviation field, as well as anyone interested in the broader development of economic regulation.

The Southern Region (B R) Class 73 and 74 Locomotives: A Pictorial Overview
The Southern Region of British Railways had long sought to design a locomotive capable of working on electrified lines and non-electrified station yards and sidings. In 1959 British Railways approved a design, designated Class HA, later British Railways Class 73, which combined the electrical equipment of the latest EMU design with the standard English Electric diesel engine in one bodyshell. An initial order was placed for six locomotives but allocated to Eastleigh Carriage and Wagon Works because the design used stock components normally found on the multiple unit fleet. The locomotives were released to traffic during February 1962 and were allocated to Stewarts Lane depot from where they powered the mundane duties of freight, parcels and empty stock services. They also tested the principle of high-speed propulsion of passenger trains prior to the adoption of the principle for the electrification of the Waterloo – Weymouth line as far as Poole. Included in this scheme was the ordering of a further 43 improved Class 73 locomotives which were built by English Electric. The locomotives proved a useful design but when British Railways was privatised in 1994 the new operator considered them surplus and sold them out of service. The original 6 locomotives had already been transferred north to Merseyside to work on the local electric network. Although initially considered unsuitable by the original operator they were highly regarded by many companies hence were sold on to continue working on the national network. Some were converted for special purposes thus were formed into sub-classes hence as at December 2022 30 of the 49 fleet still remain active in mainline service.Read more

The German Pacific Locomotive: its Design and Development (Locomotive Portfolios)
The German Pacific Locomotive (Its Design and Development) is David Maidments fourth book in the series of Locomotive Profiles published by Pen & Sword. It is the first in the series to tackle an important range of overseas steam locomotives, the German pacific locomotives, which, with the Paris-Orleans pacific in France, were the first of that wheel layout in Europe and came to be the dominant type for express passenger work throughout Western Europe for the following fifty years, until displaced by diesel and electric traction. The German railways in the first two decades of the twentieth century were run principally as regional State railways, and two distinct styles of design developed, which were influenced by the natural terrain. In the south, in the mountainous foothills of the European Alps, four cylinder compound locomotives with comparatively small coupled wheels, most produced by the famous firm of Maffei in Munich, held sway from 1907 until the late 1930s, and in parts of Bavaria that were not yet electrified, even until the early 1960s. In the flatter lands of the north, Prussian 4-6-0s sufficed until Paul Wagners standard two cylinder simple pacifics came onto the scene in 1925, and were followed by the three cylinder streamlined pacifics at the start of the Second World War. After addressing the devastating damage to the German railways in the conflict, the book follows the modernisation of the locomotive fleet in the post-war period until the elimination of steam in both East and West Germany in the mid-late 1970s. The book describes the design, construction and operation of the full range of pacifics that ran in both parts of Germany, and the large numbers of these locomotives that have been preserved, and is illustrated with over 180 black and white and 80 colour photos.Read more
