  • Transport Operator Licensing: A Practical Guide for Goods and Passenger Operators

    01

Transport Operator Licensing takes operators through the whole process of licensing, looking at when licences are required, giving advice on applying for such licences, describing the undertakings that form part of the application, the systems that should be put in place to stay within the undertakings, as well as illustrating what happens when difficulties arise and how to deal with them. Whilst there are books that cover this briefly, for example one chapter in the FTA year book, or online guides, there is nothing more comprehensive to help operators and applicants in this area. This book will plug the gap, as it will provide a tool which operators and those practising in the area can use to find out what is happening and how to deal with it.

Transport Operator Licensing is simply and clearly written, so that it can be easily followed by both operators and transport managers without any legal knowledge. There are multiple examples within the text to consolidate understanding of the topic. Appendices contain sample application forms with useful tips and advice on how to fill them in.

    01
Following on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100 and London Bus Routes One By One: 101-200, this third volume in the series explores what used to be the old London Transport’s highest-numbered block of routes. These numbers were once reserved for single-deck services, but the weight of post-war expansion soon filled in the sequence. As in previous volumes, a potted history of each route is accompanied by a list of points served and one or two pictures of the kind of bus that can be found in service today. The pace of tendering and Transport for London’s imperative towards emissions-free propulsion has meant increasingly rapid turnover of bus models, which are expected to last the length of two full-term contracts of seven years before replacement. Illustrated with over 190 color photographs, this volume represents an up-to-date snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene as it stands in autumn 2021.

  • You Call, We Haul: The Life and Times of Bob Carter (Old Pond Books) Inspirational Story of the Founder of Haulage Company, Trans UK; Explore British Transport in the Heyday of…

    08

Best known for founding international haulier Trans UK, Bob Carter was involved in the groundbreaking changes occurring in British transport of the ’60s and ’70s. Beginning in the army, where he witnessed nuclear testing on Christmas Island in the 1950s, Carter went on to be a driver, office worker, and, finally, company owner.

Never afraid to get his hands dirty, Bob was able to turn his hand to any aspect of his business operation, from repairing mechanical defects to operating forklifts and driving his own trucks. In 1975, he set out on Trans UK’s maiden run to Iran in his Humber Sceptre with four of his trucks in convoy—the first trip of many for the company.

The denationalization of BRS and the implementation of the ‘O’ licence, the rapid growth of privately owned haulage companies, combined with the Middle East oil boom of the ’70s, all helped Bob to develop a successful British and international transport operation.

Including nearly 300 previously unpublished photos, You Call, We Haul is an inspirational story which will appeal to those with an interest in the heyday of Middle East travel, and those with a general love of great British transport companies.

  • From Moorlands to Highlands: A History of Harris and Miners and Brian Harris Transport (Old Pond Books) History of the Red, Green, and Yellow Trucks … of Harris & Miners and…

    02
This book follows the history and development of Brian Harris Transport Limited, the original red, green, and yellow liveried lorries that made the trek between Devon and Scotland at regular intervals for over fifty years. In 1946, Brian’s father, Jerry, and Sam Miners formed Harris & Miners; with their fleet of two Ford trucks and one Commertipper, these two men took on the ultimate haulage challenge of the time: road vs. train. The outcome was that Harris & Miners were offered a contract to haul ‘Devon Grate’ Candy fire surrounds to Glasgow in 1947. Young Brian Harris began driving for his father in an Albion Chieftain in 1960. When Jerry Harris passed, Brian bought out the Miners family and the company became Brian Harris Transport Limited. With his fleet of ERF lorries fitted with Gardner engines, Brian set about running the company in a way only understood by him. Over the course of its existence, the company utilized a vast quantity of magnificent machines, including the first ERF ‘A’ series in that area, the Leyland Roadtrain and one Leyland DAF. Brian Harris died in April 2012 and his funeral was attended by over 600 people from all over the UK. This new edition gives an update to the events that have taken place since the second edition was published in 2007, including the eulogy given by the author at the funeral, as well as 82 previously unpublished photographs. 08

‘What defines the car-saddo condition is not being able to recall a time when the toy-car-era of your life actually ended. Because for us sufferers, it never does.’

Nobody knows cars like Chris Harris does. He calls it ‘unhinged geekery’, but the rest of the world call it infectious enthusiasm, adrenalin fuelled escapism and rigorous journalistic integrity.

And then there are his famous skills at the wheel, from city cars to rally cars, not forgetting the Guinness World Record 3.4km sideways in an electric car.

And now for the first time, Harris takes us down the road of his life-long obssession with the automobile – along surprising diversions, around hazards and obstructions, down the fast lane collecting Gs and back to the lock-up to prep the stock.

From the six-year-old who could recite the stats from What Car? magazine to the YouTube car guru whose honest reviews got him banned by Ferrari. From the Scalextric track of his childhood, to podiums as a racing driver out in the world. From behind his garage doors to the floodlit Top Gear studio.

Variable Valve Timings brings you an incredibly engaging story of adventure and petrolhead joy, told with wit, warmth and disarming honesty. This book is a true one-off, just like Chris.

  • London Transport Buses in East London and Essex: The 1960s and 1970s

    08
Starting at London City’s eastern terminus, Aldgate, this book begins with the red central bus routes radiating out to Essex, featured together with the Green Line coach services. Hackney, Clapton, Poplar, Bow and Stratford make up East London proper, with Barking, Ilford and Chadwell Heath forming the second ‘wave’. We then come into Essex with Romford, Hainault and then up to Epping. Hornchurch, Rainham and Gidea Park follow, with the outer limits at Upminster and Brentwood. Born in Romford, Essex, in 1943, David Christie started colour photography of railways in 1962 to capture the last days of steam. It wasn’t until 1967 that he realised that he should be doing likewise for his local buses and in particular his favourite – the London RT. So began several years of recording not only local routes, but also those of East London. Primarily featuring images from the late 1960s and early 1970s, the author offers a fascinating view of a golden age of transport in and around the capital, with a variety of buses on show.

The top-selling auto repair guide–400,000 copies sold–now extensively reorganized and updated

For new or would-be do-it-yourself mechanics, this illustrated how-to guide has long been a must and now it’s even better. A complete reorganization now puts relevant repair and maintenance information directly after each automotive system overview, making it much easier to find hands-on fix-it instructions. • Superstox and Stock Cars: The Golden Years

    08

The golden years of oval racing were arguably the 1970s when the sport went though its’ most rapid development and enjoyed its biggest following. The stock car formula had evolved considerably from the original version launched in 1954. Contstant development and modification over the years meant that the cars looked nothing like the original road going versions and so the Spedeworth promotion renamed their main class ‘Superstox’ and introduced a new formula closer to the original idea bearing the original name of stock cars.

Whilst hot rod racing provided a pure form of motor racing with no contact between cars allowed it was the Superstox and stock car formulae that continued to provide the ‘crash and bash’ that many race fans flocked to see. Although essentially an amatuer sport both the Superstox and stock cars contested international championships and test matches which were attended by huge crowds.

Superstox and stock cars have evolved even further since the 1970s, but captured here in over 200 photographs are the cars, drivers and the circuits from those golden years of racing.

  • Under the Bonnet: Confessions of a 1970s and ’80s Car Mechanic

    08

These days, a nice original Vauxhall Viva costs an arm and a leg, but back in the 1970s, £100 bought you a ‘good little runner’, with the rust, bald tyres and dodgy MOT thrown in for free. All you needed was someone who knew how to fix it when it broke down!

Brian Cunningham is that someone – or, at least, he used to be. Under the Bonnet is the totally true* story of being a car mechanic in the old days, when fixing a car was one thing, but keeping it fixed was something else entirely. These are the tales of a bygone age, full of secret scams, chaotic characters and cars almost bursting with personality.

    01
An analysis of the technical evolution of the Formula 1 cars during the course of 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons through hundreds of drawings accompanied by painstakingly accurate technical/sporting texts. Three remarkable seasons for Formula 1, firstly with the pandemic – which drastically reduced the 2020 championship – to Red Bull’s return to form with the incredibly quick Max Verstappen proving to be a leader capable of challenging and defeating Lewis Hamilton in the controversial conclusion to the 2021, and then repeat the feat the following year. A world championship that saw Ferrari with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz back amongst the front runners, albeit missing out once again on the ultimate honours. Paolo Filisetti “escorts” the enthusiastic reader through these three seasons, revealing through his drawings, the technical innovation introduced by the various teams, many of which were the subject of often heated debate. The volume is completed by a rich preview dedicated to the 2023 World Championship, with a chapter reserved to the single-seaters of this season, a contribution on the rules and one on the main technical innovations seen in the first part of the Championship.
