Beyond Bilal: Black Muslims in the East
In Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam, aside from Black history in the Qur’an and the black companions of the Prophet ﷺ we focused on the History of Islam in West Africa and the role Black Muslims played in the West. In this second volume, based on Mustafa Briggs lectures “Africans in Asia” and “Black History in the Arab World,” we will move eastward and explore the little discussed relationship between Africa and Asia and the Middle East.
We will first look at Black History in the Arabian Peninsula, discovering the history of the legendary black heroes of pre-Islamic Arabia, who were some of the most well known poets, warriors, explorers and conquerors of Arabia. We will then explore the brilliant black intellectuals and revolutionaries who impacted the Islamic Empires of the Middle Ages, including the first Muftis of Makkah, Egypt and Syria, as well as some of the key narrators of hadith and early scholars in the Islamic Tradition.
We will also delve into the spread of Islam in East Africa; from Sudan and Somalia all the way down to the Swahili Coast, and the stories of mighty kingdoms in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh that were ruled and shaped by East African kings, saints, and adventurers, the communities they developed, and the impact that their legacies have left on the region until the modern day.

Islam and God-Centricity: Discovering God: 5
Islam and God-Centricity: Discovering God is the fifth volume in a multi-volume series. This volume explores the notions of ‘form’ and ‘essence’ with respect to the human individual itself: What is the form of the individual? What is its essence? What is the true identity of the individual? The purpose of Islam is to surrender to God absolutely and thereby realise His Presence. God is All-pervading, and hence He is closer to the individual than they are to their own mind and body. It is because of this Truth that the blessed Prophet stated that to know one’s soul is to know one’s Lord. This book is an examination of the human individual, that is, the soul, its consciousness, mind, and body, and the factors that prevent the realisation of God’s Presence. It identifies and designates the cause of the ignorance of one’s soul, and hence all its ensuing effects, as the soul’s consciousness “I am the body”, which in Arabic is nafs ammāra. In this context, the devotional practices of Islam are also explored. The book presents the age-old notions of spirituality from an existential perspective, and hence in its own language and terminology.Read more

Islam and the Age of Unreason: An Analysis of Intellectual Suicide
The problem in traditional Islam is that it is “traditional,” grounded in tradition rather than revelation, based on the way Muslims practiced Islam rather than on the way they were expected to practice it. For how Muslims practice Islam was not always the way it was intended to be practiced by Allah. Muslims drifted from the Book of Allah to follow the books of traditions. “When they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: “Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following). “What! even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the (Blazing) Fire.” [1]
There is a chasm between a rule and its practice, between appearance and reality, between the “normative” Islam of the Book of Allah, as Fazlur Rahman put it, and the “historical” Islam of tradition. By treating tradition as “revelation,” traditionists paved the way for tradition to become a “second” revelation (tanzil). The concept of dual revelation paved the way for the emergence of the concept of dual legislation. This is why reformers support the desacralisation of tradition. “The Indonesian reformer Nurcholish Madjid has referred to this phenomenon as the “sacralization” of tradition in Islam and called for a “de-sacralization” of tradition. However, he does not reject the importance of tradition but the notion of a fixed, static tradition, arguing that tradition and consensus or ijma are ongoing and cumulative.” [2] Islam is an Abrahamic faith. The Book of Allah refers to the Jewish prophets as well as Jesus. The Book of Allah presents itself as a reiteration of the previous revelations, known as the Bible. Traditional preachers highlight differences between the Book of Allah and the Tawrat and the Injeel. Thereby they widen the gap between different faiths. These assertions fail to do justice to the universality of Islam. The Book of Allah emphasizes its parallels with the previous revelations. The UAE established the Family of Abrahamic Faiths centre. The Book of Allah does not engage in “Bible bashing,” as a few traditional preachers do, endeavouring to showcase the “superiority” of the Book of Allah in relation to the Bible. The Book of Allah does not “abrogate” the preceding revelations, as exegetes with a penchant for a parochial perspective assert. The Book of Allah reiterates the previous revelations and clarifies misconceptions regarding them. For these revelations were misrepresented. Jesus is treated as greater than a prophet. This is tantamount to attributing a “partner” to Allah, which defies tauhid. The Book of Allah exhorts us to refrain from shirk. Associating “partners” with Allah is the worst transgression. The Book of Allah rejects associating with Allah what He gave no authority for: “Say: the things that my Lord hath indeed forbidden are: shameful deeds, whether open or secret; sins and trespasses against truth or reason; assigning of partners to Allah, for which He hath given no authority; and saying things about Allah of which ye have no knowledge.” [3] “God will not forgive Shirk (choosing ‘authorities’ besides Him), though He may forgive other transgressions according to His law of forgiveness. Whoever commits Shirk, has strayed far, far away.” [4]
“Set up no god or ‘authority’ along with God. I am a plain warner to you from Him.” [5]

Islam and the Institution of Marriage: Legal and Sociological Approaches
Islam and the Institution of Marriage: Legal and Sociological Approaches is a study of Muslim marriage in modernity. The question of marriage and intimate relationships is an important site of internal contestation, as the collection demonstrates. It demands both fidelity to the tradition and its historical modes of thought and relevance to contemporary conditions. The collection of essays that make up the study engages these important and difficult questions from the perspectives of two different types of scholarship: fiqh and social science. While fiqh practitioners work with the source texts to derive new interpretations, to authorise rethinking, and thereby to create spaces of possibility for practices to change, social scientists study practices of Islam. The contributors to this volume examine challenges to fiqh posed by the contemporary by critically analysing the practices and resources available to Muslims in a range of national and historical contexts. These critical approaches will enable a wide readership to understand how Muslims engage with the assumptions and epistemologies that underpin marriage and relationships in contemporary Islamic contexts.Read more

Islam and the Problems of the Youth (Pinnacle Papers by Imam Muhammad Said Ramadan al-Buti)
The problems of the youth are not problems that are connected to them insomuch as they are problems of the community that they live in.
Sticking them to the youth is to accuse the innocent and to exonerate the guilty. To charge them with the responsibility of rising above these problems while their communities remain as they are is a very strange kind of futile behaviour.
How can that be, and what is the solution?
The answer is found in the pages of this book.Read more

Islam: What Non-Muslims Should Know
Recent events have focused attention on Islam, the often- misunderstood faith of one billion people. Westerners are showing a new curiosity about Islam and other religions, in part, perhaps, because religion is arguably the single most important and volatile factor in geopolitics today. Islam needs to be understood on its own terms, apart from extreme expressions, John Kaltner argues. This revised and expanded edition of a trusted text offers updated information about Islam in an accessible and sympathetic presentation. Kaltner presents Islam as first and foremost a religion of practices. Showing the deep humanism of Islam and its most cherished commitments, Kaltner presents Islam through assertions that counter frequent misconceptions of the faith.Read more

A magical, eye-opening account of a journey into a Europe that rarely makes the news and is in danger of being erased altogether. Another Europe. A Europe few people believe exists and many wish didn’t. Muslim Europe.
Writer Tharik Hussain sets off with his wife and young daughters around the Western Balkans, home to the largest indigenous Muslim population in Europe, to explore a region where Islam has shaped places and people for more than half a millennium.
Encountering blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims, visiting mystical Islamic lodges clinging to the side of mountains, and praying in mosques older than the Sistine Chapel, he paints a picture of a hidden Muslim Europe, a vibrant place with a breathtaking history, spellbinding culture and unique identity.
Minarets in The Mountains the first English travel narrative by a Muslim writer on this subject, also explores the historical roots of European Islamophobia. Tharik and his family learn lessons about themselves and their own identity as Britons, Europeans, and Muslims. Following in the footsteps of renowned Ottoman traveller Evliya Celebi, they remind us that Europe is as Muslim as it is Christian, Jewish or pagan.
Like William Dalrymple’s In Xanadu, this is a vivid reimagining of a region’s cultural heritage, unveiling forgotten Muslim communities, empires and their rulers; and like Kapka Kassabova’s Border, it is a quest that forces us to consider what makes up our own identities, and more importantly, who decides?

Misquoting Muhammad: The Challenge and Choices of Interpreting the Prophet’s Legacy (Islam in the Twenty-First Century)
AN INDEPENDENT BEST BOOKS ON RELIGION 2014 PICKFew things provoke controversy in the modern world like the religion brought by Prophet Muhammad. Modern media are replete with alarm over jihad, underage marriage and the threat of amputation or stoning under Shariah law. Sometimes rumor, sometimes based on fact and often misunderstood, the tenets of Islamic law and dogma were not set in the religion’s founding moments. They were developed, like in other world religions, over centuries by the clerical class of Muslim scholars.
Misquoting Muhammad takes the reader back in time through Islamic civilization and traces how and why such controversies developed, offering an inside view into how key and controversial aspects of Islam took shape. From the protests of the Arab Spring to Istanbul at the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and from the ochre red walls of Delhi’s great mosques to the trade routes of the Indian Ocean world, Misquoting Muhammad lays out how Muslim intellectuals have sought to balance reason and revelation, weigh science and religion, and negotiate the eternal truths of scripture amid shifting values.

In the process the truth-claims of Islam will be respectfully, honestly and impartially evaluated. Along the way the following questions will be asked: • Can the traditional Islamic historical accounts be trusted? • Is the Qur’an a ‘Perfect Book, Perfectly Preserved’? • Was Muhammad indeed a ‘Beautiful Pattern of Conduct’? The answers to these questions will not be sought from modern commentaries on Islam. Instead Questioning Islam goes straight to the classic sources of Islam namely the Qur’an, hadiths (traditions) and biographies of Muhammad. Questioning Islam is not an attempt to promote any other belief system or ideology. Its focus is simply on asking the hard questions about Islam that are all too often ignored or swept under the carpet. Simply put, if you have ever wondered whether the truth-claims of Islam can withstand critical scrutiny then this book is for you!Read more

The Complete Idiot’s Guide® to Understanding Islam
Islam may be the most misunderstood faith in history. Most of us learn little or nothing about Islam in school; in fact, our knowledge of Muslims may be restricted to news reports on the Middle East and Louis Farrakhan. Surprise–the vast majority of Muslims aren’t Arabs, the Muslim Allah is very much the “one God” Christians and Jews believe in, many of the scientific and medical innovations we take for granted were passed on by Muslims, and the popular myths about Muslims often have little to do with the real beliefs of Islam. The Complete Idiot’s Guide® to Understanding Islam reveals fascinating facts about Islam; they accept both the Old and New Testaments as holy books and accept Moses and Jesus as prophets. The book offers tips on Muslim culture, actual quotes from the Qur’an, the Prophet Muhammad, and prominent scholars, and answers to questions regarding everyday life from the Muslim perspective.

THE EXPLANATION OF THE NULLIFIERS OF ISLAM
My brother; this is a study of a valuable treatise by the Imaam, the rectifier, the reviver, Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab—may Allaah have mercy upon him and forgive him—entitled: “The Nullifiers of Al-Islaam”. He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, wrote it advising and warning; because just as the Muslim is required to know the truth and guidance in order that he may love it and traverse upon it, he is also required to know falsehood and misguidance in order that he may hate it and avoid it. Allaah, the Glorified and High, has clarified within the Qur’aan the path of the believers as well as the path of the criminals; the actions of the believers and the actions of the criminals and the qualities of each as well as the end result of each. He also clarified that which he has prepared for the believers from abundant reward and that which he has prepared for the criminals from painful punishment.Read more
