  • Introduction to Programmatic Advertising

    04

***** SECOND EDITION of this book now also available (purple cover) *****

Programmatic advertising is the most exciting thing that happened in marketing in a long time – perhaps since the advent of mass advertising itself.

This book offers the first comprehensive introduction to the world of programmatic advertising. If you are new to this revolutionary technology, it will help you get quickly up to speed. The book is intentionally relatively short and dense, so it can be read over a weekend – and then kept on your desk for reference.

    Here’s a quick overview:

Chapter one outlines the basic technologies enabling programmatic advertising – such as cookies, pixels, banner ads, or ad exchanges.

Chapter two introduces the programmatic ecosystem and its various players, including publishers, advertisers, SSPs, DSPs, DMPs, agency trading desks, and the most important industry bodies.

Chapter three is dedicated to programmatic ad trading, with special attention given to the real-time bidding (RTB) auction, role of the Deal ID, and publisher prioritization including header bidding.

Chapter four is all about data and ad targeting. Retargeting and various prospecting tactics are covered, including contextual targeting, behavioral targeting, and look-a-like modeling.

Chapter five expands the scope of this book into mobile. Mobile cookies, cross-device identification solutions, or location data are covered here.

Chapter six offers an overview of the current issues discussed across the digital ad industry – including fraud, viewability, attribution, ad blocking, or privacy.

Chapter seven is about new formats available programmatically, such as rich media, video, or native. It also covers new programmatic channels including TV, audio or print.

  • Environmental Law: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

    04
Environmental law is the law concerned with environmental problems. It is a vast area of law that operates from the local to the global, involving a range of different legal and regulatory techniques. In theory, environmental protection is a no brainer. Few people would actively argue for pollution or environmental destruction. Ensuring a clean environment is ethically desirable, and also sensible from a purely self-interested perspective. Yet, in practice, environmental law is a messy and complex business fraught with conflict. Whilst environmental law is often characterized in overly simplistic terms, with a law being seen as be a magic wand that solves an environmental problem, the reality is that creating and maintaining a body of laws to address and avoid problems is not easy, and involves legislators, courts, regulators and communities.

This Very Short Introduction provides an overview of the main features of environmental law, and discusses how environmental law deals with multiple interests, socio-political conflicts, and the limits of knowledge about the environment. Showing how interdependent societies across the world have developed robust and legitimate bodies of law to address environmental problems, Elizabeth Fisher discusses some of the major issues involved in environmental law’s: nation statehood, power, the reframing role of law, the need to ensure real environmental improvements, and environmental justice. As Fisher explains, environmental law is, and will always be, necessary but inherently controversial.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

  • Victorian Engineering (L.T.C. Rolt Collection)

    08
L T C Rolt was an engineer and pioneer of industrial history; in this book he combined these two passions to give us a fascinating account of the men who ‘made’ Britain. From Brunel to Telford, he takes us on a journey from the first railway tracks being laid down to bridges spanning hitherto unimagined lengths, through to the ‘invention’ and mastery of the gas and electricity, which we take for granted today. The Victorians were at the forefront of modern technology in their time, but often came to see it as a blight on their landscape and struggled to adapt to the fast pace of this new industrial era. In this book, Rolt not only examines the creations that made Britain’s empire great, but also how the age of optimism turned to one of disillusionment with many of our inventors finding fame and fortune abroad. This unrivalled insight into our industrial heritage is compulsory reading for anyone wanting to appreciate the foundations on which our modern lives were built.

I am a professor of computational science and an experienced academic with around 100 published papers. My research is interdisciplinary, to say the least: I have studied the social fabric of smartphone users, the genetic structure of ant supercolonies, the connectome of the human brain, networks of public transport, and the molecular biology of the human immune system, to name a few. I am also interested in scientific writing as a craft. So one could say that I have a broad range of interests—or that I just can’t choose, but that’s exactly how I like it!

  • That Will Never Work (Audio Download): Marc Randolph, Marc Randolph, Endeavour: Amazon.co.uk: Books

    01

In the tradition of Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog comes the incredible untold story of how Netflix went from concept to company – all revealed by cofounder and first CEO Marc Randolph.

Once upon a time, brick-and-mortar video stores were king. Late fees were ubiquitous, video streaming unheard of, and widespread DVD adoption seemed about as imminent as flying cars. These were the widely accepted laws of the land in 1997, when Marc Randolph had an idea.

It was a simple thought – leveraging the internet to rent movies – and was just one of many more proposals, like personalised baseball bats and a shampoo delivery service, that Randolph would pitch to his business partner, Reed Hastings, on their commute to work each morning.

But Hastings was intrigued, and the pair – with Hastings as the primary investor and Randolph as the CEO – founded a company.

Now with over 150 million subscribers, Netflix’s triumph feels inevitable, but the 21st century’s most disruptive start-up began with few believers and calamity at every turn. From having to pitch his own mother on being an early investor, to the motel conference room that served as a first office, to server crashes on launch day, to the now-infamous meeting when they pitched Blockbuster to acquire them, Marc Randolph’s transformational journey exemplifies how anyone with grit, gut instincts and determination can change the world – even with an idea that many think will never work.

What emerges, however, isn’t just the inside story of one of the world’s most iconic companies. Full of counterintuitive concepts and written in binge-worthy prose, it answers some of our most fundamental questions about taking that leap of faith in business or in life: How do you begin? How do you weather disappointment and failure? How do you deal with success? What even is success?

From idea generation to team building to knowing when it’s time to let go, That Will Never Work is not only the ultimate follow-your-dreams parable but also one of the most dramatic and insightful entrepreneurial stories of our time.

  • Aberdeen Corporation Transport and its Successors

    02
Aberdeen Corporation Transport and its successors, Grampian Transport and FirstBus/First Aberdeen, can trace their history back to 1898 when they commenced tram operation within the city of Aberdeen. Motor buses were first operated in 1920. During that period, all vehicles other than special occasion vehicles wore a livery of Brunswick green and white, being replaced by Lincoln green and cream in 1954. Although the company ventured into operating rural routes in competition with Northern Scottish during 1986, the company has always been, and continues to be, the major bus service provider within the city of Aberdeen. This book, written by three co-authors with a long-standing interest in buses operated in Aberdeen and the north-east of Scotland, concentrates on the fleet purchased by Aberdeen Corporation Transport and Grampian Transport from the early 1960s up to 1998, when the green livery was replaced by First corporate livery. Also featuring some earlier vehicles as well as demonstrators, ancillary vehicles and others, this book is an excellent portrait of the bus fleet in the Granite City.

Motorways are found all over Britain, from Perth in Scotland to Exeter in Devon. In fact, there are now over 2,000 miles of motorway in England, Wales and Scotland. They are used by millions of us every day, yet how often do we ever think about these marvels of civil engineering that help to speed people and goods around Britain? In a first, transport historian Mark Chatterton has brought together information about the history, construction, routes and workings of every motorway that is found in Britain in one book. Britain’s Motorways looks at each of the main motorways, including the M1, M6 and the M25 plus the other A-designated motorways, such as the A1(M), giving details of their history, routes and characteristics in a subject that has never been covered in such detail before. In researching this book, Mark Chatterton has spent many years travelling the length and breadth of Great Britain, visiting each motorway and capturing photographs.

Much has been written about the use of tanks in battle. Little, however, has appeared about the gunnery systems that are at their core. This book describes and examines the main gun systems of medium and heavy tanks from first use in 1916 in World War I to those fielded in numbers to the end of World War II in 1945, including tanks of the interwar period. Specifically considered are guns of a calibre greater than 35 mm, which have been deployed in numbers greater than 100. The emphasis is on guns mounted in turrets on heavier tracked armoured fighting vehicles (greater than 15 tonnes) which were considered tanks. There are, though, exceptions, in that the naval 6 pounder guns in First World War British tanks, as well as the 75 mm guns in French medium tanks of the same period (all turretless) are included. The treatment of gun systems includes sighting and fire control equipment, gun laying equipment, mounts and the array of munitions fired, as well as the actual gun, including its, barrel, cradle, breech, firing mechanism, sights and recoil system. Related to this are issues of gun handling (loading and unloading), ammunition design and rates of fire. Also examined are the maximum impulse and energy generated by firing some of the munitions available that must be absorbed by the gun recoil system.

  • Safety Differently: Human Factors for a New Era, Second Edition

    05

The second edition of a bestseller, Safety Differently: Human Factors for a New Era is a complete update of Ten Questions About Human Error: A New View of Human Factors and System Safety. Today, the unrelenting pace of technology change and growth of complexity calls for a different kind of safety thinking. Automation and new technologies have resulted in new roles, decisions, and vulnerabilities whilst practitioners are also faced with new levels of complexity, adaptation, and constraints. It is becoming increasingly apparent that conventional approaches to safety and human factors are not equipped to cope with these challenges and that a new era in safety is necessary.

In addition to new material covering changes in the field during the past decade, the book takes a new approach to discussing safety. The previous edition looked critically at the answers human factors would typically provide and compared/contrasted them with current research and insights at that time. The edition explains how to turn safety from a bureaucratic accountability back into an ethical responsibility for those who do our dangerous work, and how to embrace the human factor not as a problem to control, but as a solution to harness.

See What’s in the New Edition:

      • New approach reflects changes in the field
      • Updated coverage of system safety and technology changes
      • Latest human factors/ergonomics research applicable to safety

Organizations, companies, and industries are faced with new demands and pressures resulting from the dynamics and nature of the modern marketplace and from the development and introduction of new technologies. This new era calls for a different kind of safety thinking, a thinking that sees people as the source of diversity, insight, creativity, and wisdom about safety, not as the source of risk that undermines an otherwise safe system. It calls for a kind of thinking that is quicker to trust people and mistrust bureaucracy, and that is more committed to actually preventing harm than to looking good. This book takes a forward-looking and assertively progressive view that prepares you to resolve current safety issues in any field.

    • Land Rover: The Story of the Car that Conquered the World

      08

      Sunday Times Bestseller

As quintessentially British as a plate of fish and chips or a British Bulldog, the boxy, utilitarian Land Rover Defender has become an iconic part of what it is to be British.

It is said that for more than half the world’s population, the first car they ever saw was a Land Rover Defender. It mirrors many of our national traits, stiff upper-lipped and slightly eccentric. The car has remained relatively unchanged for nearly seven decades and has spawned an industry that includes dozens of publications, car shows, clubs, associations and even model car collectors who dedicate their lives to the Land Rover.

To understand this national love affair, Ben has travelled the length of the British Isles in a Defender, spending time with fellow Land Rover enthusiasts: from visiting Colonel Blashford-Snell, who crossed the jungles of the Darien Gap, to patrolling the streets of Belfast with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Ben has met folk who have converted their beloved Defenders into everything from hearses and coffee shops to works of art and fire trucks. He has travelled from the Red Wharf in Anglesey, Wales onto the Western Isles of Scotland and Islay, the island used as a testing ground by Spencer Wilks in 1947 to put several of the early Series Land Rover prototypes through their paces.

After 67 years and 2 million vehicles the Land Rover Defender has ceased production, and this book is a fitting tribute to this most British institution which has stood as a beacon of durability and Britishness across the world. Every Land Rover has its own unique story to tell. This is the story of the world’s favourite car.

    • Safety in the installation and use of gas systems and appliances: Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, approved code of practice and guidance (Legislation series)

      08
This Approved Code of Practice and guidance gives practical advice on the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (GSIUR). It is for anyone who may have a duty under the regulations, including those who install, service, maintain or repair gas appliances and other gas fittings. Every year about 14 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been properly installed or maintained. Many others also suffer ill health. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 as amended specifically deal with the installation, maintenance and use of gas appliances, fittings and flues in domestic and certain commercial premises. The changes included are to: Introduce a degree of flexibility to the timing of landlords’ annual gas safety checks. This MOT-style change means that landlords can carry out the annual gas safety check in the two months before the due date and retain the existing expiry date. This avoids landlords waiting until the last minute and not gaining access, or having to shorten the annual cycle check to comply with the law. There is no change to the legal requirement for an annual gas safety check or for maintenance to be carried out Incorporate an existing exemption into law to carry out alternative checks in situations where there is no meter to directly measure the heat input and it is not possible to measure the operating pressure, and extend the scope slightly to include situations where the meter is not accessible or the meter display is not working Disapply most of the requirements of GSIUR for installations fed by a dedicated gas supply, which are primarily used to supply compressed natural gas (CNG) to vehicles and which incorporate at least one gas compressor with an electric motor input power rating exceeding 5 kilowatts, bringing them in line with other industrial premises. Other more appropriate regulations already apply to these premises
