      02
This guidance is mainly for employers, managers and safety representatives, but may also be useful for employees. Employers must comply with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002. The guidance explains how to avoid, assess and reduce the risk of injury from manual handling. Changes since the last edition The publication has been restructured into four parts, with the regulations and brief guidance in Part 1 and more detailed guidance to help carry out risk assessments and control risks in Parts 2 – 4. Colour coding helps to identify the different parts. The appendix contains risk filters which help identify those tasks that do not require a detailed assessment. It reflects changes introduced for the self-employed by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (General Duties of Self-Employed Persons) (Prescribed Undertakings) Regulations 2015 and the Deregulation Act 2015 (Health and Safety at Work)(General Duties of Self-Employed Persons) (Consequential Amendments) Order 2015.

    • Safety in the installation and use of gas systems and appliances: Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, approved code of practice and guidance (Legislation series)

      08
This Approved Code of Practice and guidance gives practical advice on the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (GSIUR). It is for anyone who may have a duty under the regulations, including those who install, service, maintain or repair gas appliances and other gas fittings. Every year about 14 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been properly installed or maintained. Many others also suffer ill health. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 as amended specifically deal with the installation, maintenance and use of gas appliances, fittings and flues in domestic and certain commercial premises. The changes included are to: Introduce a degree of flexibility to the timing of landlords’ annual gas safety checks. This MOT-style change means that landlords can carry out the annual gas safety check in the two months before the due date and retain the existing expiry date. This avoids landlords waiting until the last minute and not gaining access, or having to shorten the annual cycle check to comply with the law. There is no change to the legal requirement for an annual gas safety check or for maintenance to be carried out Incorporate an existing exemption into law to carry out alternative checks in situations where there is no meter to directly measure the heat input and it is not possible to measure the operating pressure, and extend the scope slightly to include situations where the meter is not accessible or the meter display is not working Disapply most of the requirements of GSIUR for installations fed by a dedicated gas supply, which are primarily used to supply compressed natural gas (CNG) to vehicles and which incorporate at least one gas compressor with an electric motor input power rating exceeding 5 kilowatts, bringing them in line with other industrial premises. Other more appropriate regulations already apply to these premises

      08
This publication sets out the statutory requirements for signing, lighting, and guarding at street works and road works. This is the core reference manual for utility companies, local authorities, street work contractors and others whose day-to-day business involves street works (works by statutory undertakers and other utility companies etc) and road works (works to maintain or repair road infrastructure). The code, which covers all of the UK and includes national variations, is now compulsory for highway/road authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It applies to all single carriageway roads and dual carriageways with a speed limit of 40 mph or less. The code is now divided into three parts: Basic Principles, Operations, and Equipment and Vehicles; site layout diagrams have been redrawn to make them easier to understand. There is: increased emphasis on using risk assessment and guidance on what to consider in such assessments; strengthened guidance on providing for pedestrians and cyclists and new guidance on traffic control measures related to road closures, one-way working and temporary road obstructions; enhanced advice on other traffic control measures including works near tramways and railways, and mobile/short duration works; and updated advice on high visibility clothing and the signing and conspicuity requirements for work vehicles. Effective from 1 October 2014 when it will supersede the 2001 edition (ISBN 9780115519581).

    • Health and Safety, Environment and Quality Audits: A Risk-based Approach

Internal auditing is an essential tool for managing compliance and for initiating and driving continual improvement in any organization’s systematic HSEQ performance.

Health and Safety, Environment and Quality Audits includes the latest health and safety, environmental and quality management system standards―ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018. It delivers a powerful and proven approach to risk- based auditing of business-critical risk areas using ISO, or your organization’s own management systems. It connects the ‘PDCA’ approach to implementing management systems with auditing by focusing on the organization’s context and the needs and expectations of its interested parties. The novel approach leads HSEQ professionals and senior and line managers alike to concentrate on the most significant risks (Big Rocks and Black Swans) to their objectives. It provides a step-by-step route through The Audit AdventureTM to provide a high-level, future-focused audit opinion. The whole approach is aligned to the international standard guidance for auditing management systems, ISO 19011:2018.

With thousands of copies now sold, this unique guide to HSEQ and operations integrity auditing has become the standard work in the field over four editions, while securing bestseller status in Australasia, Europe, North America, and South Africa.
