Since 1789, when the first tobacco advertisement appeared, tobacco manufacturers have been pioneers of advertising and marketing, revolutionizing the American way of doing business in the process. The folksy, familiar and innocent-looking images portrayed in tobacco advertising were part of the new wave of product promotion – tin tags, cigar and tobacco labels, insert cards (including the first baseball cards) – that helped transform America into a nation of smokers by 1900. With illustrations of antique artifacts, old photographs and contemporary advertising, the reader is taken through the rapid growth of the tobacco industry following the Civil War, and shown a wide-range of promotional ploys and gimmickry that evolved in this century: tobacco tins, cigarette pack art, and outdoor advertising. Other advertising objects include lapel buttons, pocket mirrors, postcards, watch fobs, pocketknives, envelope stickers and more. All are lavishly illustrated, many in full color, and an informative value guide is included.

    • The Practical Watch Escapement

      06
One of George Daniels’ central contributions to horology is his co-axial escapement. Having observed that the dominant lever escapement begins to change its rate after a year or two – a disturbance caused by the sliding action of the impulse elements of the escapement – Daniels set about developing a mechanism that avoided this problem. The result of his efforts was the co-axial escapement, a mechanism in which he sought to combine the strengths and eliminate the deficiencies of existing watch escapements, the lever escapement foremost among them. First devised in 1977, today it remains largely the same as fitted in watches of Daniels’ own manufacture, as well as those of several wrist-watch manufacturers. This book explains the action of the escapement in terms accessible to both expert and layman, and is accompanied by a series of detailed line drawings.

      08
This Approved Code of Practice and guidance gives practical advice on the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (GSIUR). It is for anyone who may have a duty under the regulations, including those who install, service, maintain or repair gas appliances and other gas fittings. Every year about 14 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been properly installed or maintained. Many others also suffer ill health. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 as amended specifically deal with the installation, maintenance and use of gas appliances, fittings and flues in domestic and certain commercial premises. The changes included are to: Introduce a degree of flexibility to the timing of landlords’ annual gas safety checks. This MOT-style change means that landlords can carry out the annual gas safety check in the two months before the due date and retain the existing expiry date. This avoids landlords waiting until the last minute and not gaining access, or having to shorten the annual cycle check to comply with the law. There is no change to the legal requirement for an annual gas safety check or for maintenance to be carried out Incorporate an existing exemption into law to carry out alternative checks in situations where there is no meter to directly measure the heat input and it is not possible to measure the operating pressure, and extend the scope slightly to include situations where the meter is not accessible or the meter display is not working Disapply most of the requirements of GSIUR for installations fed by a dedicated gas supply, which are primarily used to supply compressed natural gas (CNG) to vehicles and which incorporate at least one gas compressor with an electric motor input power rating exceeding 5 kilowatts, bringing them in line with other industrial premises. Other more appropriate regulations already apply to these premises

    • L122 Safety Of Pressure Systems: Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. Approved Code of Practice and Guidance on Regulations, L122 (Legal Series)

      01

The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) cover the safe design and use of pressure systems. The aim of PSSR is to prevent serious injury from the hazard of stored energy (pressure) as a result of the failure of a pressure system or one of its component parts.

The revised PSSR ACOP and guidance is aimed at dutyholders under PSSR who are involved with pressure systems used at work. It is for users, owners, competent persons, designers, manufacturers, importers, suppliers and installers of pressure systems used at work.

Since the last edition, the ACOP and guidance has been updated for clarity. The content has not been radically changed, as it was fit for purpose. The main changes to this publication are as follows:

The decision tree on whether PSSR applies has been moved to the front of the book and explanatory notes have been added to it, to help readers decide if PSSR applies to them or not

A new Appendix has been added to provide clarity on how to apply PSSR in a proportionate manner to small pressure vessels in schools.

The section on the legal background to PSSR and related legislation has been removed as it was out of date

The Regulations themselves have not changed at all, so dutyholders’ responsibilities remain unchanged.
