I am a professor of computational science and an experienced academic with around 100 published papers. My research is interdisciplinary, to say the least: I have studied the social fabric of smartphone users, the genetic structure of ant supercolonies, the connectome of the human brain, networks of public transport, and the molecular biology of the human immune system, to name a few. I am also interested in scientific writing as a craft. So one could say that I have a broad range of interests—or that I just can’t choose, but that’s exactly how I like it!

Hunt for the Shadow Wolf: The lost history of wolves in Britain and the myths and stories that surround them
‘Beautifully crafted, fascinating and unbearably poignant, I totally loved this book’. Isabella Tree, author of Wilding
‘Gow reinvents what it means to be a guardian of the countryside’. Guardian
Author of Bringing Back the Beaver and Britain’s favourite maverick rewilder Derek Gow embarks on an adventure to uncover the mythology, mystery and history of wolves in Britain.
Derek Gow’s dream is that one day we will see the return of the wolf to Britain. Wolf rewilding projects have been successfully implemented across the world – so what is holding us back in the UK?
Hunt for the Shadow Wolf is Derek’s quest to uncover the true nature of this magnificent creature. As Derek worked to reintroduce the beaver, he began to hear stories of the wolf, both real and mythical, and his fascination with it grew. He pieced together fragments of information, stories and artefacts to reveal a shadowy creature that first walked proud through these lands and then was hunted to extinction.
What Derek came to realise was that the underlying motives behind our hatred were actually rooted in power and profit. We turned the wolf into a savage beast and saw its extirpation as a civilising mission. But the wolf endured and Derek tells of his sightings through folklore and mythology, the records of grand estates and parish churches as well as wolf heads, both real and recreated.
With bitingly funny but also tender stories, Hunt for the Shadow Wolf makes clear why we must reconcile our relationship with this majestic animal before we can begin to bring it back to these lands.
‘Gow has a fire in his belly. We need more like him.’ BBC Wildlife Magazine

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Eat ‘Em, 24: The Twenty-Fourth Sherman’s Lagoon Collection
This Sherman’s Lagoon collection provides lighthearted entertainment while weaving in ocean facts and larger messages about threats to the ocean and its creatures.Sherman’s Lagoon is a fantasy place situated somewhere in the tropics. It’s inhabited by a motley crew of sea creatures whose marine lives suspiciously mirror our own. Through his comic strip, cartoonist Jim Toomey explores many of the issues that we face daily in our world on dry land. His characters attempt new business ventures, go on disastrous dates, try fad diets, and read the latest bestselling books.
Sherman’s Lagoon appeals to adults and children alike. Children, preteens, and teens enjoy its underwater theme and the sometimes rough-and-tumble world of life in the ocean. Adults enjoy the social commentary that is a common thread in the strip.
There is also an educational aspect to the strip that gives it a unique place in the comics. Toomey explores environmental themes in a light, apolitical way. And he takes his characters on road trips, where they explore different parts of the ocean and meet native animals along the way.

It’s also the sobering account of an entire generation of high-flying Chinese tech entrepreneurs, whose wings were clipped by the omnipotent hand of their own government.’ — Brad Stone, author of Amazon Unbound and The Everything Store
PRE-ORDER NOW: the definitive look at Tencent, one of the world’s largest tech companies.

Yet to many of the two billion-plus people who live just across the Pacific Ocean, it came as no surprise at all.
Founded by the enigmatic billionaire Pony Ma, the firm that began life as a simple text-message operator invested in and created some of China’s most iconic games en route to dreaming up WeChat – the Swiss Army knife super-app that combines messaging, shopping and entertainment. Through billions of dollars of global investments in marquee names from Fortnite to Tesla and a horde of start-ups, Ma’s company went on to build a near-unparalleled empire of influence.

Interviews for Medical School: Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) Practice
Medical interviews have changed a lot with time; in the last two decades, multiple mini interviews (MMIs) have revolutionized the assessment strategies for entrance to medical schools. MMIs usually consist of 6-10 stations of independent assessments done in a timed circuit so that the same examiner evaluates a specific skill for a station among the candidates. Many of these stations assess a candidate’s soft skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, team working, leadership and professional attitudes in addition to their knowledge, skills and motivation towards choosing medicine as a career. MMIs are not just a test of a candidate’s knowledge or skills, but their ability to use it appropriately at the right time. Aristotle said, ‘we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit’. Candidates wishing to succeed in medical MMI interviews need repetitive practice in the various stations. These stations usually include assessments on communication skills, medical ethics, recent medical facts, role play with an empathetic approach, data interpretation and calculations, scenario-based situations, personal character, motivation and judgment. This book will provide an excellent variety of opportunities to practice these stations and guide the candidate with a framework of answers. This book can be used for various medical university entrance exams, including those in the United Kingdom via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), the United States via the American Medical College Application Service (AMCA), Canada via the respective Medical School Applications Service, Australia via the specific state Tertiary Admissions Centre and many other countries via their specific admission pathways.Read more

Introduction to Programmatic Advertising
***** SECOND EDITION of this book now also available (purple cover) *****
Programmatic advertising is the most exciting thing that happened in marketing in a long time – perhaps since the advent of mass advertising itself.
This book offers the first comprehensive introduction to the world of programmatic advertising. If you are new to this revolutionary technology, it will help you get quickly up to speed. The book is intentionally relatively short and dense, so it can be read over a weekend – and then kept on your desk for reference.
Here’s a quick overview:
Chapter one outlines the basic technologies enabling programmatic advertising – such as cookies, pixels, banner ads, or ad exchanges.
Chapter two introduces the programmatic ecosystem and its various players, including publishers, advertisers, SSPs, DSPs, DMPs, agency trading desks, and the most important industry bodies.
Chapter three is dedicated to programmatic ad trading, with special attention given to the real-time bidding (RTB) auction, role of the Deal ID, and publisher prioritization including header bidding.
Chapter four is all about data and ad targeting. Retargeting and various prospecting tactics are covered, including contextual targeting, behavioral targeting, and look-a-like modeling.
Chapter five expands the scope of this book into mobile. Mobile cookies, cross-device identification solutions, or location data are covered here.
Chapter six offers an overview of the current issues discussed across the digital ad industry – including fraud, viewability, attribution, ad blocking, or privacy.
Chapter seven is about new formats available programmatically, such as rich media, video, or native. It also covers new programmatic channels including TV, audio or print.

Ireland’s Seashore: A Field Guide
Ireland’s seashores are famous for their spectacular beauty, ranging from exposed rocky headlands that receive the full power of the Atlantic to enclosed sea loughs and sheltered mudflats. Our northern latitude means that some Arctic species find a home here, but the warm currents that flow up from the Gulf of Mexico also make Irish shores habitable for species found in southern Europe, the Canaries and the Mediterranean. Providing habitats like no other, our coasts are teeming with plant and animal life. Whether you visit on a sunny summer day or for a wild walk in winter, there is always something interesting to see, either living on the shore or washed up from the sea. Beginning with clear background information on types of shore, tides, waves, coastal habitats and conservation, this highly accessible guide has everything you need to understand the wildlife on our coastline. A helpful identification guide uses simple questions (e.g. `Does it have a shell?’) to guide you to the correct section (e.g. `Snails, mussels and their relatives’), where you will find an introduction to the species, followed by detailed entries on the most common shoreline inhabitants: Irish and Latin names, size, distribution and memorable nuggets of information (did you know banded wedge shells can leap if disturbed?). Written by qualified marine biologists with a passion for their subject, this is the ideal companion on any seashore ramble, whether you are a beginner or an experienced naturalist.Read more

Joan Eardley: Land & Sea – A Life in Catterline
- Focuses on a much-loved artist
- The first book to focus specifically on Eardley’s time in Catterline
- Brings to light significant new research
- Published in 2021 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Joan Eardley’s birth
- From the same author as the highly successful Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place, ISBN 9781911054023
In 1951, Joan Eardley visited the coastal fishing village of Catterline in north-east Scotland for the first time. Her visit sparked a fascination that would last the rest of her life. She made the village her home and found inspiration in the dramatic light and rapidly changing weather. The gentle landscapes and wild rolling seascapes she painted of Catterline in wind, snow, rain and sun are among her best-loved works.
Unpublished archival material and interviews with many of those who knew her shed new light on Eardley’s life in Catterline. A vivid portrait is painted both of Eardley and of the village, showing the vital part Catterline played in her development as an artist.
The story of her experiences on the wild Scottish coast is evocatively told and beautifully illustrated with some of her most remarkable drawings and paintings.

John Cage: A Mycological Foray: Variations on Mushrooms
Foraging for mushrooms with John Cage: writing, art, photography and ephemera from an idiosyncratic chapter in the composer’s life Imagined as an extended mushroom-foraging expedition, John Cage: A Mycological Foray gathers together Cage’s mushroom-themed compositions, photographs, illustrations and ephemera. Indeterminacy Stories and other writings by Cage are interwoven throughout the first volume within a central essay examining Cage’s enduring relationship with mycology. Also included is a transcript of Cage’s 1983 performance, MUSHROOMS et Variationes. The second volume is the inaugural reproduction of Cage’s 1972 portfolio, Mushroom Book, authored in collaboration with illustrator Lois Long and botanist Alexander H. Smith. Readers are thus drawn through the landscape of Cage’s mycologically centred oeuvre and interests, discovering assorted works, images, compositions, philosophies and ephemera, as one might encounter assorted fungi and flora while foraging. John Cage: A Mycological Foray constitutes a new, idiosyncratic chapter in Cage’s oeuvre, a departure from the composer’s more established narrative. American composer and music theorist John Cage (1912–92) was a pioneer of indeterminacy in music, electroacoustic music and a leading figure of the postwar avant-garde. His influence extended to the realms of dance, poetry, performance and visual art.Read more

Kayaking the Sea Roads: Exploring the Scottish Highlands
Kayaking the Sea Roads is a personal journey by sea kayak into the heart of the sea roads that make up our Scottish Highlands and islands. Blending the intensity of the journey with a careful observation of the natural world and first-hand knowledge of the challenges of living and working in this place, the author reminds us that mother nature, vast and resilient, is still out there beyond our mobile phones and urban lives. For those with the eyes to see, its natural rhythms can awaken a deep sense of wonder and give us cause to become part of the environmental recovery so sorely needed. With Ed, we travel low in the water with the restless sea ever present and we camp with him on remote rough shores. We share his feelings of wonder at the natural world, his fear at the exposure to rough seas and we encounter with him not just the myriad animals and birds that share his every day but also the people, their communities and the often gnarly rural issues impacting on human and animal alike. Alongside a deeply felt appreciation of the natural environment is a first-hand insight into the environmental and land-management issues pertinent to the Highland coast. By exploring, for instance, the impact of native versus non-native species, of community land ownership, of tourism, hunting and the varied other uses and indeed non-uses of coastal lands and seas, the readers’ eyes are opened to a Scottish Highlands that is so much more than just a pretty view. At the surface, this is an adventure story, but at its heart, it is a tale about belonging and a deep sense of place; and it is a journey home, home in the end to where the author’s Highland love affair began.Read more
