Scottish dancing explained
by Mrs. J. Proctor
I found this a great little book. I like the format of one dance per page.
Each page has a brief history of the dance – which I really like as I want to place dances in their context.
Each dance has suggested music – another win. (the music isn’t included, but there are many well-known tunes and I’m sure they can all be found on the web as for free, as they’re nearly all trad.)
Simple and straightforward dance instructions.
A good selection of dances for different numbers of people.
The drawback is that there are quite a few mistakes. The column with the counted bars of music is often misaligned with the text, which leads to problems when you try and get dancers too quickly or too slowly through parts of a move. With some dances, I was forced to fall back to watching YouTube to see how the timing was actually supposed to work.
Once I got used to the errors (ie. expected to find them) I made less mistakes as I made my own assumptions about the timing. But this meant I had to do preparation work and write extra notes on any dance I wanted to try teaching.
Bands also need to take care in using this book. The music As and Bs in the counted bars column occasionally misses out part of an A or B or changes tune part way through an A or B. I think it’s probably safe to ignore this and just follow the tune all the way through.
It’s a real shame, better proof reading would have made this a five star book.

Fantastic book! Very easy to learn the dances, as well as providing interesting historic information regarding many of the dances.
This book is ideal for both beginners and experts as you can easily learn the dances which range in difficulty thanks to clear instructions and imagery.
Cannot recommend this book enough!!! Perfect for those interested in learning about ceilidhs, how to dance, or even just Scottish culture.
