…because this is a fantastic reassessment of the game of football thanks to star writer Ivor Baddiel, beavering away on behalf of Gary Lineker. It shows how the sport was shaped by trans individuals, gay people, women and other people that you might not necessarily associate with the development of the game. If you are looking for game-changers in, say, William McGregor, founder of the Football League, or Herbert Chapman, Alf Ramsey’s World Cup winners, the Lisbon Lions, the various European-Cup-winning Liverpool teams, or Pele’s Brazil, then you won’t find much about them here. We do have Diego Maradona and his Hand of God goal but it is excused on the level that the Argentinians all enjoyed it as a piece of cunning. Great stuff.

My boy loves this book and it would have had 5 stars if the pages were the same way around as the cover ????

This book is packed full of footballing facts and history. Some of the stories and facts I knew, some were completely new to me. So fact number 9 – the match played during the First World War between Germany and Britain I was familiar with, but fact number 31 Panyee FC the team that played on the sea – I didn’t know about that at all. There are facts from all over the world, about the fight against racism, the development of the women’s game and so much more.
12 of the facts are “Gamechangers” so people or teams who have changed or influenced the game. If you had less interest in football but were interested in social history you would still find this book fascinating.
Recommended age range is 8-11 years (on the product page) but this is a book that anyone with an interest in football would find appealing. It’s something the whole family could read together. There is quite a lot of text so children who aren’t confident readers may need some help.
Overall – excellent gift for anyone with an interest in football.

The book looks great. And I glanced at it as a 40+yr old.
But it was not suitable foe young children and it was meant to be a gift foe an 8yr old so I returned it.
For a teenager it might have been a different review….

My family couldn’t get enough of this book, and I’ve just bought my nephew a copy for Christmas as well. It really makes you realise the power and positive impact football has had, and can continue to have on the world.
Would recommend highly for children aged 8+ and even fun for their adults too!
