The 501 featured here are arranged according to when born – from George Arlis (1868) to Natalie Portman (1981). An index ensures easy access to anybody one particularly seeks. For each there are basic details, succinct assessments, often pithy quotations and anecdotes. Throughout its 600+ pages, the book is lavishly illustrated.
Inevitably some users will query inclusions and omissions. Those depicted achieved international fame, not exclusively in Britain and America – several names may thus be unfamiliar.
The aim was a quick browse – instead I emerged, astounded at how time had passed. So much of interest. So many surprises. Here are the stars, warts and all – although coverage stresses the positive aspects. There are sad reminders of premature departures because of accidents, illness, alcohol and drugs. Then there are the laudable comebacks when careers seemed to be over.
Discover here the megastar, talent initially well hidden in “The Return of the Killer Tomatoes”. Learn how River Phoenix’s parents were wise to change their family name. Admire those so disarmingly self-deprecating – as when Steve Buscemi confides, “My favourite review described me as the cinematic equivalent of junk mail.” Disagree most violently when one says of another, “She can speak five languages, but can’t act in any of them.” From Sophia Loren comes “Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti.” Katharine Hepburn declares, “Enemies are so stimulating.”
No wonder so many who pick up this book will not be leaving it for a while!

A comprehensive list of actors past and present films.Although it doesn’t list every film the actor is credited with it is still very informative and a must for anyone who love film as much as I do.
