Rather disappointed in this short book. I was hoping for a factual and objective treatment of the subject. Once seeing ‘the literal word of God’ mentioned, the alarm bells started ringing.

The book was well enough written and the language clear and concise, however, at times it fell into the trap of most religions of availing of every opportunity to establish the inerrancy of a holy text.

Some of the statements in relation to women and terrorism would seem to be at variance with the perceived understanding of these subjects, based on reported situations in Islamic countries or countries where insurgency is attempting to establish an Islamic culture. However I have no doubt that Islamic fundamentalists, as any other religious fundamentalists, can find justification within their holy text to support what they believe.
I don’t want to enter into a concept by concept examination of this book. I have no religious axe to grind. All I can say is that after reading it I felt my understanding had not been significantly enhanced, nor had I gained any insight that would enable me to defend Islamic thought In the face of some current attitudes based on views presented in the media.
Perhaps I need to read it again to see if I have missed anything.
