My 7 year old was giddy with excitement when I got her this book and delved straight into it. She has read the original Magic Faraway Tree collection by Enid Blyton and was a bit put off by the name changes but the story quickly drew her in and I think she probably appreciated the more contemporary perspective. It’s a beautiful book, she loved the small illustrations throughout. Five stars from her. She’s a strong reader, this level didn’t bore her even though it’s recommended aged 5-7 years. The plot, characters and concept are perfect for her age.

This is a beautiful modern take of the classic story and very engaging. I’m reading it bit by bit at night to my 4 year old. The reading style is appropriate for 7-8 year olds in my opinion. It is a hardcover thick book so they will take some time to finish it. The small illustrations are good, I would have liked a few more.

My daughter is 7 years old and reads Teal book bands at school, she can read this fine. The recommended age of 5-7 is fine and the storyline is suitable for that age range although some younger readers may need help reading it by themselves.

If you know the author and style of writing you know what to expect, a good age appropriate storyline. The book is very high quality, a good hard back with nice cover. It could make an excellent gift although being Christmas themed I think it would actually be better to give a child this early December, reading the book throughout December will then give a nice build up to Christmas.

In summary; excellent quality, good story, highly recommended.

Jacqueline Wilson has written some amazing children’s books and this one is inspired by Enid Blyton’s collection of Magic Faraway Tree stories.

The text is big and the story is easy to read for a child of around 8 years old. It’s a nice book to read in the run up to Christmas.

Review for: A Christmas Adventure (The Magic Faraway Tree)

Price at the time of writing: £13.09 (Hardcover)

Good size and a good quality hard backed book with dust cover.

The book is a beautiful festive story written by Jacqueline Wilson but inspired by Enid Blyton which features Enid Blyton’s beloved characters along side a new group of children and of course Santa. The text in the book is a good size so totally appealing to the younger readers, I can wait to read this a little closer to Christmas with my Children .

To be perfectly honest I was a little apprehensive starting this book. I’m 50 and the Magic Faraway Tree was one of my absolute favourite books growing up so I was concerned about what a modern take would be like (I haven’t read the previous book by Jacqueline Wilson). I needed have worried though – Jacqueline Wilson is, of course, a brilliant children’s author and she has taken the story and modernised it but stayed within the feel of the original Enid Blyton books. It’s a perfect companion piece for modern children – the lands and characters still feel magical, there are some lovely little nods to previous Enid Blyton characters (the children are brought ginger beer on a beach picnic and aren’t quite sure about it – the explanation is that the other children who come love ‘lashings of ginger beer’ which is a perfect reference for us older readers!) and the stories are engaging and fun.

I’ll certainly be recommending it to any younger readers and it was also lovely for me to read. It made me feel nostalgic for my childhood books, which is quite a feat considering I’d never read this one before, so parents and grandparents should enjoy it too!
