Took me a month to purchase and read this as I was a bit disappointed with the last one.
Am delighted to say AC’s skills at holding my attention nonstop AND enough occasional loud laugh-out moments are all within this story. Took a day to complete and know that I will enjoy re-reading in due course.
Actually, there is no prize fighting in this story. The Hero is a former prize fighter looking to invest his winning in the word of theatre. The story is set in the world of music hall and the audience is the slightly lower classes.
We get the thoughts, voices, angst, hopes, despair, and joy of both the H and h. What was initially meant to be a marriage of business slowly turns to love. This is AC’s specialty, writing about marriage and the early year or two AFTER marriage, and its a wonderful insight of mutual discovery, errors, mistakes, assumptions, and reconciliation as the protagonist realise the have actually fallen in love with each other.
Her bed sport writing should be studied carefully by budding authors (and old) she comes at an entirely different angle of the H & h learning each other’s body, and although some may find it a bit crude, it works.
All space and development for minor characters – and there are many characters in this novel, from doormen to paperboys, to the performers and their family members.
Lots of little subplots to keep the momentum without distracting from the main love story.
Tiny negative; there were times when I felt it was TOO detailed and TOO lengthy analyses.
The Vawdrey series continues to be my favorite but these are fast competing. Recommend.

Alice has secured her place solidly as one of my favourite authors. Clem is a wonderful clueless idiot who thinks he’s the cleverest most devious thing to exist, and Theo is a whirlwind, an innocent but incredibly clever force of nature. I don’t know if it was the intent but Theo comes across as a neurodivergent character who’s eccentricities are not just understood or noted by other characters as reasons why she may be different or lacking in some way but are actively part of the attraction for Clem, as well as being the source of her untapped potential. Adored everything about this book. Would give more stars if I could!

Dora (Theodora) is such an amazing character, she captured my attention from the first chapter and I couldn’t put the book down.
My favourite book in the series, definitely worth a read and you don’t need to have read the other books to enjoy this one.

I love Alice Coldbreath’s writing to date. …..But – I’m only 19% of the way through this book and there are repeated errors where the writer uses the heroine’s sisters name (Henrietta) instead of her own (Theodora)…very confusing and basically sloppy writing/editing.

Really don’t see how this could be missed in even the most basic editing. It’s irritating to have to reread a sentence several times making sure you’ve not misunderstood the context, just to realise it’s a basic error. I hope either the person responsible for editing the book/or the author can correct and update the kindle version for future readers. And I hope the author keeps writing her wonderful book – they’re interesting and all round delightful.

I’ve read almost all of Alice Coldbreath’s books. The Prizefighter series has been very engaging all the way through. Clem Dabney was quite an unpleasant character in previous mentions which makes this story all the better. I absolutely loved how he becomes entranced with Dora. His fall is just completely charming. There’s plenty of hot and steamy moments too. Dora is a heroine was also great and I rooted for her till the end. Well worth a read as it’s a proper fight.

Alice writes stories I keep wanting to reread again and again. She is one of the few authors who gives a perspective from both sides of a relationship and does it in a way that captures your interest. It’s also possible I’m so eager to read the stories that I miss bits and have to reread the books to find the bits I missed. Either way I keep enjoying them every time I read them so that should tell how good they are.

Where does Ms Coldbreath dream up her wonderful and unique stories? This delightfully humorous, tender and emotive book was so difficult to put down. All the characters, central and minor, are finely drawn and the dialogue sparkles – I arrived at the final page with much regret, what am I going to do from now until ACs new releases in 2023 ????????????.

I’ve now read all but one of Alice Coldbreadth’s books and I can’t say enough about them. The characters are all well formed and likeable and they all feel very individual, I don’t feel like I’m reading about the same characters across different stories. I love the way the relationships build throughout and the way the dramas and issues are resolved. Well Worth reading.
