A Cook’s Book is the story of Nigel Slater’s life in the kitchen.
From the first jam tart Nigel made with his mum standing on a chair trying to reach the Aga, through to what he is cooking now, this is the ultimate Nigel Slater collection brimming with over 200 recipes.
He writes about how his cooking has changed from discovering the best way to roast a chicken to the trick to smoky, smooth aubergine mash. He gives the tales behind the recipes and recalls the first time he ate a baguette in Paris, his love of jewel-bright Japanese pickled radishes and his initial slice of buttercream-topped chocolate cake. These are the favourite recipes Nigel Slater cooks at home every day; the heart and soul of his cooking. Chapters include: a slice of tart, a chicken in the pot, everyday greens, the solace of soup and the ritual of tea. This is the essential Nigel Slater.
Nigel Slater’s book ‘A Cook’s Book’ was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 20-12-2021.

I have to say, I have been excited by this book. I love Nigel Slaters writing style and I own a number of his books which I read, (as one would read a novel), regularly on a Sunday morning as I potter in my kitchen drinking wine and cooking. I more often than not don’t really cook from cookery books but I have been so excited by a large number of the recipes in this one that I find I am doing just that! Merely reading the ingredients has me dying to taste the dishes. Thank you Nigel, I think this is the best book I have read in a long time!

Brilliant book written in Slater’s calm and concise way, there’s a method to Nigel’s work and every recipe or group of them has a story. Nigel has had an interesting and at times challenging life and this shows in his writing I recommend his books to cooks and even those who would like a good culinary based read.

I decided to buy this after purchasing the Christmas Chronicles last year. It doesn’t disappoint.
The only disappointment was the damaged corners to the book….otherwise its a great cookbook and I would recommend. If its not worth cooking, it’s probably not in this book ! (*_*)

I have several of Slater’s books already. I’d give this 6 out of 10. I feel a cookery book is worth the cost if I would regularly make at least six of the recipes. This fulfils that but with some criticisms.
The main criticism is that some of his recipes are not logically set out. I say this as an experienced cook.
A good recipe starts with the ingredients and the preparation. So if the eggs need to be separated, that should come at the start with the list of ingredients. If chocolate needs to be chopped, or something ground in a pestle and mortar, it should be stated at the start, not when your cake is mixed and almost ready for the oven. His writing is frankly, waffly and muddled.
For me, too many very familiar recipes are included here. For example, fish cakes, apple pie, chocolate brownies and the usual pasta with various sauces.
At least a third of the book is given over to bready type of baking ( four days to make your sourdough starter? I think not.) Then there are the biscuits, cakes, pies and puddings. All delicious but only for an occasional treat.
One thing I like is that he uses the minimum of ingredients (5 or 6 is perfect!) and most of the food is simple. Depending on your store- cupboard, you may have to stock up on some exotic sauces and herbs.
If you like a cookery book that has the feel of a novel about it, you will love it!

Unlike some cookery writers (I’m thinking of a cockney failed businessman here) slater’s recipes are accurate and sound. They work in your kitchen. There’s also a really good spread and variety of recipes. Like all his other books this makes you want to cook.
