This is a great thriller that takes you deeply into the world of London’s financial underworld in the 1980s. Gripping and hugely enjoyable, with charming, interesting characters. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the series.

Rupert is a devilishly charming and witty character. Coupled with a great plot centred around corporate espionage and money laundering, this book is a sure winner.

The author is able to bring you into the world of surveying and turn into something that is gripping and exciting. The thrill of making a deal draws you in and keeps you turning every page.

The underlying conspiracy and money laundering plot has enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes throughout!

A really great read, can’t wait for the next!

In 1980s London, the property market is overheating and estate agents are making silly money. Rupert Brett, barely out of university, is driving a VW Scirocco GTX (remember them?) and guzzling champagne with the best of them. He’s prepared to turn a blind eye to clients who dish out the odd bribe to beat the market. But soon he’s mixing with very unsavoury characters indeed – and that’s when, as the title puts it, deals become deadly.

A fast-paced tale of life in the fast lane *guaranteed to blow your mind, as the song goes), danger leaps up from the page and grips you by the throat.

Quite well written. Bit predictable, but a good story

London, 1986. Newly qualified surveyor Rupert Brett’s job in the brokering industry may be the making of him. But the ruthless nature of the business isn’t what he’d expected, and he soon finds that the competition is fierce and without remorse. Can Brett keep his head above water and stay out of trouble without throwing his ambitions to the wall?

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it got off to a great start, pulling me in from the first page. However, from there, the plot slowed down so much that I began to wonder if the early promise might have taken a nosedive. To be fair, Simon Fairfax captures the feel of the eighties very well, with the sharp suits and attitudes that were so prevalent at the time. But he also spent a lot of time introducing dozens of characters very quickly that left me confused about who the important ones were. It felt as if the first few chapters clogged up the rest of the story. Thankfully, the plot does get back up to speed later but if this had been a casual read, I’d have given up before then.

An interesting and well-researched book that should have been better.

Fairfax vividly evokes 1980s London and the world of property wheelers and dealers in this page turner. The world of cut-throat surveyors is bared for all to see – quite an eye opener. The plot twists and turns as the action moves from London to Italy, and there is plenty to keep your attention right until the last page. I am looking forward to the sequel!

Super gripping read, straight on to book two and doubt I will be disappointed
