I thought this story was pretty feeble, even compared with the original!
The wicked stepmother was vindictive, vulgar and pushy but lacked cunning. Kicking up a dust at the wedding would immediately been seen as sour grapes.
The heroine herself had no common sense. She should have immediately destroyed any letters she did not want anyone to see. She was permanently cowed by life. She should have appealed to her father for help.
She had done nothing to be ashamed of, and should have outfaced the gossips. If she had appeared radiant and confidant everyone would have feted her good fortune.

The massive over use of the word ton, is irritating in the extreme. It ralky makes tge narrative forced and clumsy. The premise of the story is a variance of cinderella really although with a little substance. Many characters are lightweight but it is readBle if irritating

LADY CHARLOTTE – was her own person – did not bother her that she was not beautiful or that everyone laughed at her and her sister because of the old fashioned garish clothes they were forced to wear by their stepmother who was only concerned for her own daughter. Her stepmother was determined to get Charlotte married and away from the family.
LIKE DUKE OF SETON HE WILL NEVER BE COMPROMISED OR EVER MARRY – He was relaxing in gardens when a dog charged up to him dropping a letter in front of him curiously he picks it up and starts to read it he heard someone telling Rusty come here. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WELL READ THIS IT’S GREAT.
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS I LOVED THE DUKE AND THE HELP HE GAVE.
    LOTS OF UPS AND DOWNS

This book has it all. Great story,, likeable hero & heroine, wicked stepmother & stepsister. The stepmother does everything to make her stepdaughters unacceptable in society to make her own daughter seem so much better than them in comparison. But for me the worst person was the father. What kind of man cant see how his wife treats his daughters in his own house. He has to be aware, just weak & ineffectual.

Luke meets Charlotte when she is all muddy after chasing a dog to get her letter back as the dog had given it to him and he has read it he already knows her secret. Luke is attracted to her and decides to help her in doing so they fall in love. He has to take on her terrible stepmother before they can marry as she wants him for her daughter even though she knows he does not love her.

Characters were all a little one dimensional, I liked that it was a clean regency but the characters could have been a lot more rounded.

by Kindle Customer Carol pike (love regency fiction)with a good story line.

The characters were quite good especially the hero, the heroine needed a bit more guts but her sister played a great part in the story.

I really enjoyed this story. It is well written and flows easily. It is a story about how love overcomes the arrogance and disdain of the ton. Charlotte’s mother was a commoner who married in to the ton. She was looked down upon and her daughters were regarded as beneath those in the ton. When her mother died, her father remarried. Charlotte’ stepmother and stepsister were cruel and enjoyed making fun of Charlotte and her sister, Martha. They were treated badly. Lord Thomas had been writing to Charlotte and she believed he wanted to court her. However, at a ball, his engagement was announced to Lady Sophia. Duke Luke had seen Charlotte and spoken to her. He realised she was upset. In the time that followed they agreed to have a fake courtship to try to force Lord Thomas to court Charlotte. However, they do not realise that strong feelings would develop between them. After getting rather close to each other at a ball, a scandal begins and they are forced to agree to marry. Charlotte is convinced that the Duke cannot possibly really love her and her stepmother is determined to stop the marriage so her own daughter can try to attract the Duke. Will Luke be able to convince Charlotte that he loves her? Will they be able to escape the prejudices of society? Will be find love eventually? Read on and enjoy.
