A SUNDAY TIMES TOP 5 CHILDREN’S BESTSELLER
A short novella based on the beloved characters from Alice Oseman’s acclaimed debut novel Solitaire and graphic novel series Heartstopper – now a major Netflix series. From the author of the 2021 YA Book Prize winning Loveless.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?
CHARLIE: “I have been going out with Nick Nelson for two years. He likes rugby, Formula 1, dogs, the Marvel universe, the sound felt-tips make on paper, rain and drawing on shoes. He also likes me.”
NICK: “Things me and Charlie Spring do together include: Watch films. Sit in the same room on different laptops. Text each other from different rooms. Make out. Make food. Make drinks. Get drunk. Talk. Argue. Laugh. Maybe we’re kind of boring. But that’s fine with us.”
Everyone knows that Nick and Charlie are the perfect couple – that they’re inseparable. But now Nick is leaving for university, and Charlie will be left behind at Sixth Form. Everyone’s asking if they’re staying together, which is a stupid question – they’re ‘Nick and Charlie’ for God’s sake!
But as the time to say goodbye gets inevitably closer, both Nick and Charlie question whether their love is strong enough to survive being apart. Or are they delaying the inevitable? Because everyone knows that first loves rarely last forever…
Alice Oseman’s book ‘A Heartstopper novella NICK AND CHARLIE’ was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 04-07-2022.

Refreshing and natural love story which every teenager currently in a relationship will identify with, irrespective of gender or sexuality.
A great sequel to the truly wonderful Heartstopper TV series – you’ll gobble this up and won’t want to wait for further developments in the Nick and Charlie story.

Content Warning: Mental Health Issues and Eating Disorder. Nick and Charlie follows Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring at the beginning of summer. This is Nick’s last summer before going to University and whilst he is so excited for it, Charlie is secretly worried that he is being left behind. Which is such a real thing that couples go through at this age. My favourite character was Charlie Spring and I didn’t have a least favourite. I recommend this book because it’s real, it’s relatable, it shows that these two lovable characters have flaws and they’re still lovable. And I might have fangirled a bit over Nick Nelson applying for university in the same city as me. ‘I used to think I was pathetic for thinking soppy, romantic stuff like that. I don’t anymore. I just keep thinking it. I keep wanting him here. I keep wanting him to stay.’

Nick and Charlie is an amazing short story which has so much content despite only being 150 pages. I would say this book is better than Alice Oseman’s other novella ‘This Winter’, but only by a margin.

Teen LGBTQ drama.
Great insight on to the not so perfect parts of teen relationships.

You have to finish the heart stopper series.

Gripped from the first page. I’m not normally a fan of the graphic novel format, but after a couple of pages it had me hooked. I forgot that I was reading a picture/comic book and the heart warming story took over. The book tells such a sweet story of innocent young love with all its shyness, embarrassment, humour and awkwardness and is incredibly relatable for anyone who is or ever has been a teenager with a crush. Beautifully done. It’s addictive reading; both myself and my 12 year old daughter enjoyed the whole series immensely. As a cautious mum, I would highly recommend reading for preteens. It deals with young romance in a sensitive and age appropriate way, encouraging mutual respectful and unrushed, considerate behaviour within relationships.
Fantastically refreshing to have the two protagonists as a homosexual couple of young boys, a lesbian couple and a trans girl. Such cute characters and relatable no matter your sexual identity or orientation.
Later novels in the series deal with serious topics such as eating disorders and anxiety in a sensible and informative way. Gripping reading with relevant and current themes for a preteen/teen but handled in a safe and cautious way.
Not only encourages acceptance of diversity, but makes it impossible not to fall in love with this quirky group of friends and their experiences and adventures. Love love love ????
