A short novella based on the beloved characters from Alice Oseman’s acclaimed debut novel Solitaire and graphic novel series Heartstopper – now a major Netflix series. From the author of the 2021 YA Book Prize winning Loveless.
The festive season isn’t always happy for Tori Spring and her brother Charlie. And this year’s going to be harder than most.
I used to think that difficult was better than boring, but I know better now…
I’m not going to think about the past few months, about Charlie and me, and all of the sad. I’m going to block it all out Just for today.
“Happy Christmas, ” I say.
Alice Oseman’s book ‘A Heartstopper novella NICK AND CHARLIE’ was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 04-07-2022.

Content Warning: Mental Illness and Eating Disorder. This Winter takes place on Christmas Day, in the same timeline as Heartstopper Volume 4. It is narrated by Tori, Charlie, and Olly Spring, and follows the events of Charlie’s first Christmas Day after being diagnosed with OCD and anorexia. It shows the struggles of dealing with mental illness and eating disorders and dealing with someone you care about going through this. It shows how different people react and is informative in regards to how you can support someone in this situation. My favourite character was Oliver Spring and least favourite character was David Nelson. I recommend this book, especially if you’ve read the Heartstopper graphic novels, as it gives an insight into Volume 4 and also how both Tori and Olly are dealing with what’s going on. It’s interesting to read one of Alice’s novella’s after reading the graphic novels, and to gain a deeper understanding of Charlie’s struggles. ‘When people know you’re mentally ill, most people either want to ignore it completely or they treat you like you’re strange, scary, or fascinating. Very few people are actually good at the middle ground. The middle ground isn’t hard. It’s just being there. Being helpful, if help is needed. Being understanding, even if they don’t understand everything.’

This winter, like most of Alice Oseman’s creations is quite sad, but it is very heartwarming in the end and offers the perspectives of the 3 Spring siblings, Tori, Charlie and Oliver.
