    Admittedly this is called “A” history of advertising and I appreciate that you cannot cover everything but there are some things that cannot be left out. I am talking about the giants of advertising. Rand, Bass, Games, Gilroy. and the brands that have done so much to develop the quality of advertising, Guinness and Bovril for example.
    As always with Taschen you certainly get quality images and to be honest this is mostly why I buy them but a little bit of academic rigour is required in any publications that purports to show a history of a subject. One glaring example is not only the omission of Paul Rand but when discussing IBM and showing the logo he designed he is not even mentioned? Only Saatchi are mentioned in the article.

    Although this book is great, I was a tad disappointed that many of the fantastic British ads that I saw as a youngster are not included. And astonishingly, even some of the major agencies are not covered; there’s nothing from or about CDP, who produced the brilliant ads for Benson & Hedges in the 1970s (just go Google “CDP iguana ad”). Barely a few ads from BBH, but none of their classic “Vorsprung Durch Technik” ones. And not even the best that the Saatchi brothers had to offer! But yet, the writers managed to find two pages of space for the dreary Nicole and Papa ads, and the same amount of room for Tide (???)

    I didn’t expect to see every single ad ever created in history, and it is cool to see commercials and print ads from other countries, like Brazil, Germany, and Italy, but the book should at least have featured some of the most famous international ones. There are none of the fabulous black and white VW Beetle print ads from the Mad Men era, for example. The book is separated into decades, ie 1961 -1980, with brands listed as contents at the front, and the relevant agencies listed before each chapter. It was written by two French authors, who apparently worked within the industry, and of course there are more French advertisments than from other countries, but strangely nothing from the French company Benetton, who commisioned some very controversial and memorable ads in the 1980s. Propaganda posters are reproduced, and racism in advertising is barely skimmed over. It’s quite cool to see the very earliest print ads for brands like Coca Cola among others, but NOTHING from Pepsi?? Not even their infamous rivalry with Coke?

    Coming from Taschen, the print quality is excellent of course, the book is heavy and feels expensive, and that’s the problem; Style over substance. I feel as though I’ve ordered an expensive meal in a restaurant, but am still very hungry after eating it. If you are a long-time fan of advertising, and know a thing or two already, the omissions in the book are quite obvious. So, I have done something unusual with this review, and posted some pages from the book, along with some ads which should’ve been included. Nice book but, it could’ve been great.
