A History of Nursing explores the history of nursing by investigating the earliest records of the caring profession, how it progressed and what established it along the way to becoming the nursing we see today. It starts at the beginning of the story – how, once upon a time, all we had to depend on was Mother Nature. Over time, education and standards improved for the safety, development and governance of the profession. Not everything was plain sailing and the book introduces lesser-known people who made this possible, sometimes at great cost to themselves, and the effect military nursing had on the nineteenth century in turning nursing from religious principles to the secular nursing we see today. How did nursing go from being knowledge handed down through ancient scripts, folklore and sometimes by accident, to the degree-level, accountable practice of modern times? And why do nurses not wear hats anymore? A History of Nursing answers these questions and more.

When i think about the name Calamity Jane, i think Doris Day and musical theatre. I would not have made reference to her nursing capabilities. Reading about the lesser known nurses in history, and how registration came into being has been very informative. Prior to reading the book, my initial thought was that Edith Cavell, and Mary Seacole didn’t play a bigger part in the book. Now having read the book, i understand why.
Throughout the book there are regular references to the NMC code of conduct 2015 along with well chosen quotes. These sit nicely in supporting the authors work. The author covers a wide range of aspects of nursing history from prehistoric times through to Florence Nightingale. Two chapters cover the Early and Late middle ages and show in great depth how, once christianity took over from the romans our early hospitals came into being. Hildegard of Bingen plays a big part in the book at this point.
From 1400 onwards the author begins with the Renaissance and shows the reader how medicine and nursing start the foundations of nurse training. Florence Nightingale makes her appearance, and the author shares her knowledge of the earlier specialist areas of nursing .These include Wet Nursing, district nursing, hospice and midwifery care.
A very well referenced book, and i have used a couple myself through my own nursing studies. On a personal level this book has allowed me to reflect closely on my own 30+ years of nursing, and the reasons why i became a nurse.

Bought for an X nurse who had some feel for the history of the profession but not a complete picture.. this helped fill in the gaps.

I was trying to find a good book on the History of Nursing, due to an exam I have on history of medicine.
I ordered this book with high expectations.
However, The book is clearly not academic at all. The depth is minimal, and I found myself knowing already most of it. For example, in nursing before Nightingale in England, there is only half a page describing how low nurses were regarded then (!), and in Nightingale’s biography there is no mention to her amazing statistic work.
2 stars because the photographs inside are very beautiful.
