A Long Time Dead: A D.I. Duncan McAdam Mystery (The Misty Isle Book 1)
£1.90
You can’t stay dead forever…
A group of high school students gather on the Isle of Skye’s remote Coral Beach for a hedonistic night of partying to celebrate the passing of their final exams. The new millennium is on the horizon and the future beckons, promising new hope and a fresh wind of optimism. In the coming days, many will leave the island for work or to study on the mainland, whereas others will remain on Skye and forge a more traditional path much as their families have done for centuries before them.
That is… all but one…
D.I. Duncan McAdam is dispatched home to the Misty Isle. A body has been found buried in a remote location on the Waternish peninsula. Well preserved in the peat, Isla Matheson – missing for the better part of two decades – is revealed to a shocked island community. A teenage runaway is dead… and no one is talking…
Joining a small team of detectives, Duncan is tasked with revisiting those who knew Isla, those who cared for her… and those with the potential to kill her… In a remote community well used to settling scores among themselves, will they trust one of their own when he asks questions or will they persevere with the façade of ignorance?
A Long Time Dead is the first book in the new Misty Isle series of crime thrillers from the Amazon #1 multi-million selling crime writer, J M Dalgliesh, the author of the Hidden Norfolk and Dark Yorkshire books.

I cannot find the words to really explain what this book meant to me. I no longer stay on Skye but am not too far away on the mainland. I visit friends and relations quite regularly, There are lots of desolate areas on the island but I was able to see them in my mind’s eye when the characters left the lights of Portree.
The geographical geography is spot on – one place mentioned which brought back a lot of memories was the steep stone steps where we used to gather, at the top after school, and watch all the tourists struggle down to the coaches waiting for them down below !! (Now if I| need to go down them I struggle!!!).
The words ‘Misty Isle’ is very appropriate. The number of times I have started on the bridge in sunshine and just when reaching land – it is misty !!! When leaving, the same happens in reverse, it is just as if there is someone operating an invisible curtain.
To top it all I listened to a fantastic Scottish narrator. A good long audio book and am looking forward to number two

I’ve enjoyed the Dark Yorkshire Series and have been enjoying the Hidden Norfolk Series. Often, when an author starts writing a new series, it’s not always easy to settle into the first book. This is definitely not the case with this first of The Misty Isle books.
The saying lost in a good book comes to mind or, in this case, captured from start to finish.
This is no doubt due to the author’s unique way of writing. His descriptive of his characters and especially the setting of the Isle of Skye is wonderful, and it’s so easy to visualise in your minds eye.
The gripping storyline and plot are well written with strong characters, revelations, and many a twist and turn to keep you guessing all the way through.
All in all, this is a most enjoyable book, and I would definitely recommend it.
I enjoyed it that much, I have pre ordered the next book in the series, and I am very much looking forward to reading it.
As always, I had this book on pre-order, but I would very much like to thank the author for the advanced copy.
This is my honest and unbiased review.

I really enjoyed A Long Time Dead: A D.I. Duncan McAdam Mystery (The Misty Isle) book 1 of 2 by J.M. Dalgliesh.
This is the first crime thriller I have read by J.M. Dalgliesh and it is brilliant set on the Isle of Skye. I also loved the humour D.I. Duncan McAdam has with his colleagues at the station.
A group of students are throwing a beach party on the isle of Skye in celebration of passing their final exams. Some were to leave the island to seek gainful employment but others would remain to carry on in their ancestor’s footsteps and help their kinfolk.
Sadly a teenage runaway Isla is found dead after twenty years and the body has been preserved due to where it had been buried. D.I. Duncan McAdam has been ordered home to his roots to solve who murdered her.
Loved the way J.M. Dalgliesh described the elements and life on the isle it was graphic that as a reader I felt transported right to the island and community. Loved the Scottish slang words and the meaning of them at the end of the book. I was not disappointed.

Good interesting book. I thought I had the ending sussed, as Duncan did, but I was wrong ! a real insight to The Hebrides and a longing to see them for myself!

I’ve solved this. Nate Caslin (Dark Yorkshire series) and his dad have moved to the isle but his MO gives him away. A bit lazy to clone the antihero, socially careless, loner policeman but an an engaging read all the same.

A great new series from J M Dalgliesh. I’ve read all the Dark Yorkshire series (my favourite) and the Hidden Norfolk series. I didn’t know what to expect from this new series but the character development was great and I can’t wait for Book 2 to find out how Duncan’s character progresses.

Duncan McAdam, haunted by his past, dumped by his girlfriend and disliked by his co-workers in the Glasgow police, finds himself sent back home to the Isle of Skye to solve a twenty year old mystery of the disappearance of a local girl who’s body has just been found. Forced to face his past while solving what happened within the tight community he grew up in, and couldn’t wait to leave, he finds that running away isn’t the answer and when the opportunity to remain on secondment in Skye comes up he accepts that it’s time to let go of the hurt and anger of the past.
Set in the stunning but harsh scenery of the Hebrides where daily life is can be a struggle against the elements, it’s people are as strong and enduring as the landscape, bound by tight bonds of blood and friendship.
Once more, JM Dalgliesh has produced a brilliant read with this new series of books and I can’t wait to read the next one ….
