Well written. Very basic introduction but useful.

Best introductory book, way above all introductory books on any subject.
I hope you can write a book on what law says about presentation of forensic evidence and expert evidence. Thanks.

This book was perfect for me. I’m about to start an apprenticeship as a Barrister’s Clerk, so having a thorough knowledge of the law isn’t at all necessary for me, but having a basic grounding will be important to understanding the purpose of my job and allow me to better comprehend the work of the Barristers that I will be working with/for. For instance, the chapters on civil law and criminal law were extremely useful because I will be working as a general clerk within criminal, civil, and family expertises.
I wouldn’t recommend this for someone who is looking to go into law as a career, it is definitely for those who just need or want a general understanding of the system for their own reasons.

If you know next to nothing about English law, this is the place to start. I know some law but this book succeeded in filling the gaps in my knowledge. The writing style is very accessible and the examples used (often landmark cases) are clearly explained. The book is fairly up to date and covers the EU referendum result of 2016 but does not go much further (if it did that chapter could well b called “How long is a piece of string?).
It’s probably a decent primer for someone considering studying law at GCSE level, or A level at a push.
With regard to content and format I would have liked to have seen a few diagrams showing the layout of a crown court, illustrating the separation of powers; the law regarding stop and search by a constable; a glossary and suggestions for further reading. However, in writing this book Michael Lambarth has produced a useful guide on the basics of our legal system and what we should know about it. One final point, anyone interested in law, particularly criminal law, would be well-advised to exercise one’s right to sit in the public gallery at a crown court in order to see what really happens and to see law in action.

This book’s title is all the description you need. A quick and easy read. Critics might say lacking detail but that is the point, it is intentionally an introductory text. The author explains where more complex aspects of the law are beyond the book’s scope.
Recommended for UK citizens to gain a fundamental understanding of how our society’s legal system evolves and functions.
