This was my first Katie Fforde novel and it was a really pleasant, escapist read. I really liked the central character Alexandra and her friends Jack and David. Characterisation was a little sketchy, and the children who were really interesting could have benefited from a lot more detail than they were given. Nothing really bad ever seemed to happen to Alexandra, admittedly she was an orphan but also an heiress to a massive fortune, and she had one quite frightening adventure but was only ever in mild peril. I liked the two bitchy women who disapproved of her, Lucinda, the divorced wife of Comte Antoine (the love interest) and Veronique his colleague, who obviously had designs on him, they were well-drawn and the subtle way in which women put one another down was spot on. But what happened to Veronique? One moment she was looking like a real threat, the next, she’d just vanished. Katie Fforde has millions of fans and I don’t think they’re wrong, this was a lovely read but I’d prefer it to be longer maybe and a bit more meat on the bones of the characters. I would thoroughly recommend for the beach, the hospital or whenever you need cheering up a bit. For something just a tiny bit ‘grittier’ but set in the same sort of world, try Mary Stewart, she’s still in print and you won’t regret it.

Interesting and realistic characters in a wonderful setting. Loved the storyline and the happy , if not predictable ending.
Would gave liked a bit more detail of the wedding at the end. No mention of the new mural in the orangery, flowers and wedding food.

Set in the early sixties this is a charming romantic read,I’ll not go into the story just sit back and relax . This is a perfect holiday book so if you are off to the sun get a copy and take it to the pool or beach.

I don’t think I could have picked a better story for my first ever Katie Fforde book. Plus, I got to buddy read it with my booksta bestie, Hannah. Well, I say buddy read… *taps chin*
This was your typical Hannah/Laura buddy read where the planned reading schedule goes to pot on the first night *snorts*. So, after a trying week at work I had a date with my sofa and the book on the Saturday and I wasn’t moving!
*sighs* I devoured Alexandra’s story in just over a day. Once I started I didn’t want to put it down as the story unfolded. I hesitate to use the term easy-read as there is a skill to make a read this effortless. The pages were turning themselves!
Set in the early 60s, a chance meeting in Paris will change 20-year-old Alexandra’s life… at least for the summer. Oh come on, I can’t give all the story away!
I will say this… if you have a weakness for pining/unrequited love à la forbidden love (ish!), self-discovery and found family tropes then you are in for a treat!
Btw, I’d go ahead and admit surrender right now and prepare to lose your heart to a sassy nine-year-old.
Also, please tell me I’m not the only one that was getting all The Sound of Music vibes? Hello Captain Von Trapp aka Antoine! *sighs* (again!) It’s the whole saying so much without saying anything, isn’t it? Hello to The Look! Words are so underrated!
It was as if the Chateau and its inhabitants were just waiting for Alexandra’s arrival (and those who follow) to breathe new life back into it. Talk about being a spark! I just wish I’d been there for one event in particular.
Oops, I best shut up now or I’ll be here rambling all day. To sum up, I think it’s safe to say this won’t be my last KF read.

This book has charmed me to such an extend that I have decided to be serious about spending a lot of time in France. What a lovely and beautiful story taking one on a journey of total delightful escapism! Strong characters, wonderful setting, delicious food, and nicely cultivated emotions. Et le charme a la Francaise (sorry no accents). Thank you for writing this wonderful book!
