Accountancy for UK Contractors: A bare bones guide to running your own limited company

£6.60

Based on my experience as a contract electrical engineer, this book explains how to set up and run your limited company’s accounts, from registering your company to completing year-end tasks.

  • Registration and set up
  • Routine transactions
  • Payroll
  • Dividends
  • VAT
  • Invoicing Expenses
  • IR35
  • Year-end tasks

I use free accounting software for my own business, doing the routine bookkeeping myself but using a budget accountant to prepare my annual accounts. This low cost balance between using an accountant and going it alone is the knowledge level that I aim to share.

Other than a bonus chapter on setting up a cut price website, non-accounting aspects are not covered.

This book is intended for companies based in the UK.

This book is great for setting up an Ltd and knowing what you have to file and when. You’ll still need to do some work, and check updates regularly, but after reading this you will be much better informed.

I bought this coming from a slightly different angle. I’m looking at changing career into accounting for self employed contractors. I wanted to read this to see the position that someone new to contracting finds themself in. It’s easy to presume people have knowledge that they don’t have. I found it well worth reading and it contains lots of useful advice and information for people who are looking to do the majority of their own business accounts.

Worth a read as it will give good insight what you need to do or know. I realised i just needed to find a descent accountant at the right price. When my accountant tried to charge me a grand more, i quoted the rate stated in here and he agreed.

Interesting more so if you are a contractor who issues invoices, and use the same accounting software as the author.

This is a great book packed full of information that would help someone setting up as a contractor. There were even parts that made me smile (I didn’t expect that in a book about accountancy). The day after I started reading it, I found myself in a conversation about the relative merits of being a sole trader or a limited company. I only knew the difference because I had read it in this book.

Even though this book is entitled a “bare-bones guide”, much practical information is still covered in this short read.
