Accounting for Beginners – The Basics: CakeShop Edition
£11.40
This book is aimed at those who are completely new to accounting; ideally students who are interested in studying accounting or for those who wish to start an accountancy qualification such as the ACA. It is great for beginners but this book will also give insights into how much more there is to come.
Although this book will cover the basics of accounting, it will stimulate your brain. There will be many examples throughout. Given we have been through the very difficult COVID-19 pandemic and many people turned to baking, I have used a running example of starting a cake business.
The book will cover the following chapters:
1) An Introduction to Bookkeeping and Accounting
2) The Statement of Profit or Loss
3) The Statement of Financial Position
4) The Balance Sheet
5) The Dual Concept of Accounting
6) Double-Entry Bookkeeping
7) Trial Balance and Producing Financial Statements
The book will not teach you how to set up a company or how to prepare your own accounts.
Accounting is not easy and can be overwhelming at first, but I am here to get you through it. Hopefully, you will enjoy it along the way too. Give it some time and practice, you will nail it.

I am about to start working towards my level 7 chartered accountancy qualification, this book was really helpful is allowing me to feel more confident into starting the qualification. Everything was explained so well as compared to many other sources I have come across. I really recommend.

I bought this book as a bit of pre reading before I start studying the ACA qualification. It was brilliant, I already had some knowledge but it helped to clarify the theory behind the practices that we do as well as learning new things. All the content was clear and concise which helped me to understand the concepts. I love how there is question practice as you go through the book to check your understanding as well!

This book absolutely hiits the spot in tackling widely used accounting terms.
Because understanding the financial accounts of a company is key to valuing it for investment purposes, you need to somehow make sense of the dozens of terms dotted throughout accounting report.
This book does an excellent job of explaining the key terms in sompke English with clear worked examples. Further, it avoids the all too common pitfall of most accounting books in lapsing into technical jargon and elaborate explanations.
The use of colour to draw the reader’s attention to important aspects also works well.
It would have been even better if it was ring-bound to make it easier to annotate or use on a desk as a reference.

Absolutely love this book – builds everything up bit by bit in a super logical way with lots of examples. Will be gifting a copy to any of my nearest and dearest who are just starting out with accounting.

As a former manager in PwC audit, I have to say this is a great book for those starting out in accounting. It gives a great overview of what to expect and focuses on the two key set of accounts – P&L and SFP. It also introduces the concept of debits and credits which can sometimes be tricky to get your head around, but Jag explains it simply and concisely. I particularly enjoyed the use of the cake shop business throughout the book which made all of the concepts much easier to follow. I would definitely recommend this to budding students seriously thinking about starting a career in accounting as it is a great insight of what you can expect. I would also recommend to those just starting out in an accounting role as it will help to gain a wide overview of why we do what we do and there are a lot of useful nuggets in there which you can take and use in practice. Once again, great book and thanks a lot for writing it Jag!

I want to say a massive thank you! Thought this would be a good step towards learning the basics before starting my job at PwC, having just graduated with a maths degree and having no real accountancy knowledge. The book has been absolutely perfect, taking me through concepts that I am now coming across as I complete the pre-course work for when I start studying towards the ACA. The simplicity of the explanations were perfect for helping me understand and staying engage whilst learning what could otherwise have been tricky topics to understand. It didn’t however lack in depth and it did not leave me questioning anything covered. The numerous questions throughout were excellent for helping me test what I had read and the format of the book and the A4 size also made it perfect for scribbling on.
I am very grateful and I am looking forward to checking out your articles to help me further throughout the ACA!
