My 7 yo is currently in Year 2 and although confident at maths it doesn’t really excite her as reading does so this was a useful indication of how engaging this workbook is. Whilst some of the methods seem a bit alien to me the concepts are aligned with the school teaching and make sense once you see what they are getting at. They are all broken down into colourful excercises over 2 pages – however that is the downside as a lot is crammed into the book but there are only a handful of questions per concept e.g. numberlines, partitioning etc so it’s all too easy to complete the stage and then move on when in reality a page or two of exercises that can be repeated would be more useful – it seems more of a crash course in Year 2 maths. That and the fact that the pages are very thin so even using pencil means it’s tricky to erase and do it again means it is essentially a one-shot workbook and honestly for £3.50 there are many free resources out there covering all the topics in there – just depends on how much support is provided from school and how inclined you are to find the exercises to make sure the concepts are understood and not just completed over 3 questions.

I’m a big fan of the materials that CGP produces to reinforce classroom learning in the home. And this arithmetic activity book is another winner.
As always with CGP, the contents of this workbook are carefully aligned with the national curriculum, so you can be assured that it reflects what your child is doing in class. So, for example, the book covers concepts like number lines, number facts, partitioning, and so on. The exercises increase in difficulty, giving children the chance to gain confidence in one area before moving onto the next. All the answers can be found at the back of the book.
At the end of each section, there are “extra” challenges, which involve applying knowledge learned in that section to specific problems. Here, there are also three emojis (equating to “struggled” “ok” “excellent”) for children to identify how well they’ve done.
My six year-old grandson especially enjoyed the problem solving tasks towards the end of the book. These show how arithmetic crops up and can be used in everyday, real-life situations.
A brilliant, highly recommended resource to support classroom learning.

Having spent the latter part of a career as a cover teacher I’ve learnt that CGP™ are undoubtedly the market leader in textbooks for Maths and English, covering all exam levels in great detail and with an excellent level of clarity. Here’s something a little different, aimed at giving infant school children of 6-7 a good grounding in Maths with an Addition & Subtraction Activity Book. With a five year old grandson seemingly excelling at Maths and reportedly helping his classmates’ comprehension in lessons, making sure he stays ahead of the game with material slightly ahead of the curve is a key concern of both grandparents and parents. The book is closely matched to year two of the National Curriculum with 32 brightly coloured pages in A4 size, and with a shiny cover which is ideal to enable wiping down from typical sticky hands, with a range of activities which ring the changes – activities are in no way ‘samey’.
The pages get progressively harder as the child learns, with three answers pages at the end to help parents teach the youngster. Everything is written in a pleasing, easy font, and activities are varied to encourage lateral thinking, with plenty of attractive drawings to garner attention. I was reminded of the layout of ‘Functional Skills’ textbooks I’ve seen for 16-18 year olds, and this skilfully adapts the learning progression, albeit for a much younger audience.
The topics are split across two pages each and in sections: How it works, giving an example of the skill about to be tackled; Now try these, giving the child questions to attempt; and An extra challenge, which are slightly more difficult questions to stretch. The pictures used draw the eye: counting exercises using birds, knights and longboats helping with a number line, surfers helping with partitioning, fish, and a nice break with a game of snakes and ladders and appropriate supporting questions.
What I like is the variety of activities; the bright colours used which will attract a youngster, and the way that learning is made to be fun. This was eagerly accepted by the grandson who was soon working his way through the exercises on offer. For just £3.50 this is definitely value for money, which is something CGP never fail to provide regardless of the age range or exam targeted. They’ve clearly taken the curriculum apart and created a book tailor made to bring out the best in 6-7 year olds. The tasks are:
• Using Counting
• Using a Number Line
• Number Facts Up To 20
• Partitioning
• Adding and Subtracting Ones
• Adding and Subtracting Tens
• Puzzle: Snakes and Ladders
• Adding Two 2-digit Numbers
• Subtracting Two 2-digit Numbers
• Adding Three Numbers
• Checking Calculations
• Missing Number Problems
• Real-life Problems

This is a good book and is challenging for kids but just a bit thinner than I would have expected.

All the young one should learn basic what they don’t seem to be taught in schools anymore

My grandson has just started infants school so when I saw these books I ordered one for spelling and another for simple equations.
After having a quick look through the books, I found the maths one to be very easy and something that any parent can help their child with, the English book I though to be a quite advanced in some ways for a five year old but then again it was many, many, many years ago that I was at school, lol, so obviously things have changed somewhat.
This book concentrates on basic addition and subtraction which is something that every child needs to get a grasp on as early as possible just for everyday use as much as for school. I actually though this book to be a little young for a six to seven year old but then maybe school curriculums nowadays start with spelling and English before maths.
All of the answers are in the back of the books, so just incase the parent does get stuck they can look up the correct answers, just don’t tell the child, lol.
This set of age related text books will definitely help to give a child a boost in early learning and hopefully help them as things grow slowly harder.
Recommended.
