In 1997 sixty-two containers fell off the cargo ship Tokio Express after it was hit by a rogue wave off the coast of Cornwall, including one container filled with nearly five million pieces of Lego, much of it sea themed. In the months that followed, beachcombers started to find Lego washed up on beaches across the south west coast. Among the pieces they discovered were octopuses, sea grass, spear guns, life rafts, scuba tanks, cutlasses, flippers and dragons. The pieces are still washing up today.

This is an brilliant read. Well written and fascinating, taking you through the magic of beachcombing and revealing the incredible story of the lego spill that has left some beaches with treasures to find. It is laid out with easy chapters so you can dip in and out of the many stories that make up this book – it’s like a treasure chest – i ended up reading it cover for cover as it was too good 🙂 . Anyone who cares about the environment, loves the sea, or likes finding hidden gems should read it. it is informative and moving without being at all preachy! Very impactful- would make a great gift !

If you own a holiday cottage, a pub with rooms, a b&b, and you’re near the coast in Cornwall or Devon, you need this book. You probably need multiple copies of it, as it’s likely to go missing more often than the toilet rolls. You could probably turn a profit taking the cost from the deposit. Prior to, or the evening after, a day on the beach, this is the perfect coffee table book reflecting on how those quirky bits of plastic that we spot and have to carry around in our pockets because the kids insist, or you just like picking up, came to be there. Beautiful but thought provoking writing, stunning art, all so carefully curated. A book to immerse in rather than just read. BUY IT!!

This is a lovely book to read, full of interesting details, humour & lots of pictures. It is both fascinating & sad, as it sheds light on how much we pollute our worlds seas. Perfect for beachcombers, Lego fans & anyone interested in protecting the environment.
