At a Glance is a great series of books aimed at students and the newly qualified alike, this is an excellent handbook that is well laid out with plenty of illustrations, a comprehensive text and is overall an essential point of reference for anyone involved in adult nursing. I fact anyone interested in the medical process can glean something from this accessible but detailed reference book.

One of our family friends is a student nurse and, in order to write a review for this book, I borrowed some of the textbooks that she is currently using so that I could make a comparison. Because I am not medically trained I can only comment on what I could see but I was immediately struck by how visually inviting Adult Nursing at a glance was. I thought the lay out was excellent, particularly the impressive illustrations. Whereas many of the textbooks my friend uses were dull and uninviting this book actually draws you in and makes you WANT to read it; I found myself reading large sections of it and now know more about the respiratory and immune systems that I ever thought was possible. As I wrote earlier I have no medical background whatsoever but I found the text easy to follow and the style quite engaging. I would, in fact, have kept the book as a reference (we all sometimes like to self diagnose an ache and pain rather than visit the doctor!) but I had promised it to our friend. She likes the book too, and intends to use it as a “quick” reference book, meaning that she will probably refer to it when she is looking for information instantly, but thought that other books would be consulted for more detailed information.

Concise detailed sections, mainly spread over two pages = quick and easy access, perfect as a quick reference for busy busy nursing staff.

It also carries some excellent detailed drawings to support the topics outlined.

Really well laid out and not overly wordy, perfect.

I have little negative to comment on this excellent textbook, if indeed at all. It has been extremely well produced on high quality grade paper, which makes it a pleasure to read, and it is very easy to locate any topic. All nurses will gain benefit from having this textbook to hand, whether a new undergraduate, or qualified nurses needing a brief top-up the number of topics that broadly cover various syllabuses. With the CourseSmart function of the website it proves a great corollary to this hardcopy version, and can be a handmade tool for the keen student to make the most of their studies.

Overall a great nuts-and-bolts text that does the production team much credit, and won’t pinch the purse too much for a textbook that will sustain in its use over a few years. I speak as a qualified nurse both in mental health and adult nursing who has practised for 40 years.

Another excellent addition to Wiley Blackwell’ s extensive range of nursing textbooks.
Developed using the most current NMC guidelines, this is a super study aid. The addition of access to Wiley Blackwells E learning resource makes this book a great investment for both students & qualified staff alike.

These are just really great reference guides. The layout and presentation are fantastic. It’s not that huge a book and covers a lot of conditions so depth wise it provides a good overview in way of clearly labelled diagrams, then structured text sections on key facts common signs, symptoms etc, Essentials of best practice and so on.
I wouldn’t even say this was one of the best books in the series but the high standards are all there and its immensely accessable.

As with all the “at a glance” series it is very easy to find the information that you are looking for quickly. The combination of good illlustrations, tables and lists of relevant information serve as an important reference, but I do feel that text isn’t as enganging as it could be in places. Long lists of bullet points are sometimes overwhelming. I do not quite understand as to why “older people” are treated as a seperate species in reference to good communication.
