Fashion is a big bubble, and sometimes I feel like popping it.’ Alexander McQueen, 2009 This definitive publication on Alexander McQueen (1969 – 2010) invites you into the creative mind and world of one of Britain’s most brilliant, daring and provocative designers, and the many themes and references that shaped his visionary fashion collections. Accompanying the V&A’s landmark exhibition Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, and taking the key themes of the exhibition of tailoring, gothic, primitivism, naturalism and futurism, this comprehensive catalogue features previously unseen material as well as groundbreaking essays and feature spreads by multiple authors and leading fashion commentators. This kaleidoscopic approach explores themes central to the designer’s work and his collections, such as the psychology of fashion, natural history, the theatre and spectacle of his shows, and the key creative collaborators during McQueen’s lifetime. Alexander McQueen also offers an encyclopaedic survey of McQueen’s catwalk collections, illustrated with striking images by leading fashion photographers, and specially commissioned photographs that capture the breath-taking skill of his designs and awesome theatricality of his shows. Accompanies Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (14 March to 19 July 2015), developed and expanded from the 2011 blockbuster show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

This is THE book of McQueen. As another has mentioned, much better than the Met catalogue of the Savage Beauty exhibition, read on to find out why!

This is not just a book of photos (although there are plenty of those, and a good mix of catwalk shots, behind the scenes shots as well as images that would have inspired McQueen), but a comprehensive overview of McQueen’s career. The are around 25 essays on various aspects of McQueen’s career. This is a book that will take hours to properly get through, so most definitely value for money. The book is not in chronological order but split into themes which isn’t my preference but makes for an interesting take on McQueen. All images are clearly captioned and relate well to the text.

This book is almost the opposite of the Met catalogue – rather than one picture per page and a lot of blank pages filled by a singular quote, here each double page spread will almost certainly have a combination of text, and a few smaller pictures and or one larger picture. It’s a bit of a sensory overload but I feel that’s more in McQueen’s style than the minimalist design of the Met catalogue! I particularly like that this book has a ‘Encyclopaedia of Collections’ which gives a small summary of every single collection Alexander ‘Lee’ worked on. The paper quality is excellent as expected – as an aside, this has a glossy finish and the feel of a deluxe magazine, whereas the Met book uses slightly thicker, matte feel paper.

This is probably the most comprehensive fashion book I own – whilst some may find it a bit text heavy, it’s brilliant for a scholarly overview and there are a good mix of photos from different sources. I would say the focus of this book is McQueen’s career as a whole and what he was influenced by, and who he was a person, and how that made the clothes. Whereas the Met’s book is primarily focussed on the visuals/structure of the clothes themselves with no context. It’s interesting how one exhibition can spawn two very different catalogues. Those with an interest will probably want both as they serve different functions, however, if you’re only going to get one, get this one.

This book just arrived yesterday but was the final book I needed for styling in my grey and copper kitchen/livingroom area, therefore, the colour of the book is perfect. The copper/rose gold writing on the front and spine of the book is a lovely touch. I have put it together with the Christian Louboutin and Tom Ford Book and all 3 books are perfect together. This book is really high quality, has hundreds of beautiful high quality prints and lots of interesting information. I’ve only had a quick flick through it and already learned that Alexander McQueen is Scottish (as am I) and has had two seasons where he included tartan in his designs. It came wrapped in cellophane and well packaged. Great statement piece for a great price!
