How can we look afresh at Shakespeare as a writer of sonnets? What new light might they shed on his career, personality, and sexuality? Shakespeare wrote sonnets for at least thirty years, not only for himself, for professional reasons, and for those he loved, but also in his plays, as prologues, as epilogues, and as part of their poetic texture. This ground-breaking book assembles all of Shakespeare’s sonnets in their probable order of composition. An inspiring introduction debunks long-established biographical myths about Shakespeare’s sonnets and proposes new insights about how and why he wrote them. Explanatory notes and modern English paraphrases of every poem and dramatic extract illuminate the meaning of these sometimes challenging but always deeply rewarding witnesses to Shakespeare’s inner life and professional expertise. Beautifully printed and elegantly presented, this volume will be treasured by students, scholars, and every Shakespeare enthusiast.

A bedside book worth every penny. Well presented with good explanations of the language and a modern “translation” for each sonnet at the rear of the book. One to keep and dip into every so often.

I purchased this book in preparation for a professional Shakespeare job and it didn’t disappoint. The sonnets are laid out in a unique fashion and are presented with accompanying footnotes to help make them even more illuminating to the reader/performer.

As Judi Dench says on the front cover, the sonnets are indeed brilliant training for an actor and, when presented in this way, make them even more interesting to perform, read and study with. Highly recommend!

As the book says it is all the Sonnets. This means it includes those in the plays as well as the canon of 154 individual sonnets normally collected in one volume. I love Shakespeare and have found this edition sublime. There is a sonnet for every occasion.

A beautiful edition of the sonnets. I enjoyed it. Having them arranged chronologically, and with an informative commentary, cast a new light on them for me.

I love the book, but I got the Kindle edition and was disappointed to find it was not compatible with my Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. Ok on Kindle app on iPhone and iPad.
I think it’s because the publisher wishes to retain the exact page layout of the print edition.
