The director Peter Dews prophesied: “You’ll be alright when you’re forty, and even better when you’re fifty.” It turns out that Peter Dews was right, almost to the month.
In a study of British theatre through a varied acting career spanning over sixty years, Oliver Ford Davies explores the many changes within the performing arts scene through his experiences on various stages, in a variety of productions, across the country.
Davies charts the ups and downs of British theatre in the last sixty years, while offering a unique perspective on life behind the curtain and the daring journey from leaving behind an academic career and into acting.
From Shakespeare to Shaw, Chekhov to Pirandello, this is the story of an actor initially struggling to make a mark before making his breakthrough at fifty, winning the Olivier Best Actor award and being propelled into thirty years of leading roles.

This is a brilliant book from a brilliant actor
by tartuffeclunes
A brilliantly written book. He really is a wonderfully inclusive writer and actor and I’ve ordered his book on playing Lear to spend more time in his company!
by M. K. Davies
A beautifully written history of theatre in the last 60 years, full of funny stories and insights. If you love British theatre, you will get so much pleasure from this book!

No idea why a previous reviewer gave this one star when they clearly enjoyed it, but I’d give it an extra one if I could. A witty and incisive memoir by a character actor of great talent who has managed everything from Shakespeare to Star Wars. His previous book ‘Performing Shakespeare’ (not to be confused with John Barton’s ‘Playing Shakespeare’) is an invaluable book for actors at all stages of their careers. Highly recommended!
by M Attenborough CBE DLitt.
One of the most talented actors I have ever directed. Collaborative, intelligent, generous (and ludicrously modest!), he possesses a deeply irritating habit of making it all look so easy!
This book is full of insights and inspiration. You disregard such experience and wisdom at your peril.
Read, enjoy and inwardly digest.

This will make fascinating reading for anyone interested in English theatre in the past seventy years.
