FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER THE CALLER

A freak accident in rural Wyoming leads the Sheriff’s Department to arrest a man for a possible double homicide, but further investigations suggest a much more horrifying discovery – a serial killer who has been kidnapping, torturing and mutilating victims all over the United States for at least twenty-five years.

The suspect claims he is a pawn in a huge labyrinth of lies and deception – and he will now only speak to Detective Robert Hunter. These interviews begin to reveal terrifying secrets that no one could’ve foreseen, including the real identity of a killer so elusive that no one, not even the FBI, had any idea he existed . . . until now.

Have read all the Robert Hunter books love them all and read them all twice. This one is the best most memorable it keeps you up all night and keeps you awake just thinking of the serial killer and Robert what a chain of events this book is. A must read all of them are and what a writer Chris Carter is. Exellent.

I have read several of Chris Carter’s books, yet for some reason this one didn’t quite do it for me. I found the first part of the book slow and a bit of a slog. Then it picked up pace and interest and I started to race through it, enjoying the twists and turns until almost the end. An ending which felt a bit too, I’m not sure of the best word, contrived? unbelievable? As I am very happy to suspend disbelief when it comes to films and books, I’m finding it hard to put my finger on just why I was a bit disappointed. I won’t let it put me off trying another of this author’s books as, on the whole, I have enjoyed them. Give it a go and see what you think.

Best read in the series so far, hooked from start to finish and once again Chris Carter has smashed it. Can’t wait to start I Am Death, this author amazes me with every book I read.

OMG, what a book, what a series!!!

I was introduced to Chris Carter’s books via someone I met on holiday who recommended Written in Blood. I normally never read books out of order but it is just irresistible not to read as you buy.

Anyway, to An Evil Mind, irrespective of this being based on real life cases which would normally escalate such a book to higher ratings, this does not need it, so gripping is the storyline.

I am currently 85% in having reluctantly put it down to cook dinner but I am sure the ending will be as amazing as the rest of the book.

Need to buy the rest now then I’m going to re-read them in order.

    Thanks Chris. Keep them coming.

I have read the previous Robert Hunter books by Chris Carter and enjoyed them a lot but I think that this one is even better. You don’t have to have read any of the previous books to enjoy this one – although I recommend them. In fact, the author takes Hunter away from his usual environment and his partner when a possible killer in custody will only speak to him and he joins with the law enforcement officers to try and unpick what, if anything, that his old college friend has done.

This is an exceptionally well plotted book with lots of twists and turns and it has one of the best opening sequences I have read in quite some time – you are gripped from the beginning. The author specialises in surprises for the reader but although the psychological tension is very high in this book and it is difficult, if not impossible, to predict what will happen next I felt that the goriness level was actually toned down and I didn’t feel, as I have before, that the book was revelling in the evil that one individual can inflict upon another.

Robert Hunter is an inscrutable character with an above average intelligence, insomnia and an amazing memory. In this book we see a little more of his past and understand some reasons why he behaves as he does. The author makes Hunter human to such a degree that he can even be fooled by a serial killer. His inability to rest or take a holiday plus his budding relationship with a female officer all add layers to his character.

The author writes his book in a series of short chapters, Each chapter changes point of view or moves in time. I like this way of writing and it meant that the book was fast paced and exciting. What I like less well is the author’s habit of ending each short chapter with a mini-cliffhanger. After a while this is not only wearing but you begin to look out for it – when your mind is on the writing style it is away from the story. An example is where a box is found under a mattress – those who find it look inside and are shocked by the contents although the reader doesn’t know what they are. Other people are then shown the box and the next chapter ends with them too being shocked although we are still in the dark. Finally the narrative switches to the killer who muses on how the police will feel when they find the contents of the box. Eventually we do find out what is in the box and it is shocking but the constant mini-climaxes wore me out. The author doesn’t need this stylistic quirk. This is an excellent, gripping and exciting novel without it.

This is one for fans of Tania Carver, Jeffery Deaver, Lisa Gardner, JA Kerley and Jonathan Nasaw. It is an excellent example of the serial killer genre.

Yep. Another Robert Hunter book and another 5 stars. Is this the most readable thriller series ever? Possibly.

I’m still amazed that these books have the page count than they do. They feel much shorter than they are Mr Carter certainly knows how to tell a story that’s for sure.

Here he obviously pays homage to Silence Of The Lambs with a fantastically twisted serial killer romp that is as gruesome as it is thrilling. Throw in a bit of “Se7en” vibes too and we have posssibly the best in the series yet.

I’m trying not to read these one after the other because I am enjoying them so much. There is a format to them but the stories are so varied(and twisted) that you actually enjoy the familiarity of thr structure.

So yeah 5 stars again for Mr Carter. My kind of clever twisted and enthralling thriller series.

Can’t wait to read the next one but I will. I want to make them last a bit longer.
