Angie Lewin: Plants and Places
£20.00£23.80 (-16%)
The artist Angie Lewin has a unique vision of the natural world. Her hugely popular prints depict in intricate detail the native flora of a variety of environments, from salt marsh and Highland loch, to flower-strewn meadow and wild garden. Lewin finds beauty in each landscape, whatever the season, and is particularly inspired by plant forms: slender reeds, stately goatsbeard, spiky teasels and sculptural seed heads. ‘Plants and Places’ presents over 70 of Lewin’s beautifully crafted linocuts and wood engravings. The works are grouped according to habitat such as coast, woodland and hedgerow, and garden together with drawings, paintings and collages from Lewin’s sketchbooks of grasses, seed pods, seaweed, shells and other objects that she has collected on her walks. In an engaging introduction, Leslie Geddes-Brown meets Lewin in her studio, discusses her artistic inspirations and her fascination with plants, and describes how she creates her prints.

I have admired Angie Lewin’s work for many years. I “discovered” her first through her greeting cards, and then some time later I saw her beautiful prints at various exhibitions. This book is fantastic; a wonderful showcase of her amazing work. Whenever and wherever I see certain wild flowers that appear in Angie’s work, I always think of them as “Angie Lewin flowers”… I strongly recommend this book to anybody. It doesn’t just sit on my shelf, this book is very much loved, and looked at very frequently…

Angie Lewis’s lino cuts are amazingly intricate and something to aspire to.

Came across this in a bookshop last week and instantly loved it – hints to husband fell on deaf ears so whilst stuck in traffic on the way home I went on Amazon and treated myself. It is an inspirational book, of course the illustrations are stunning, but the writing puts it all into context & deepens the appreciation and understanding of Angie’s work. I particularly enjoyed the insights into the different printing processes that she uses and the links with the places that inspire her work. The explanations are thorough without being patronising or detracting from the enjoyment of the images. A fascinating insight into the work of an inspirational artist. It takes pride of place on my coffee table 🙂

This is one of the most beautiful of coffee table books. Angie Lewins prints are gorgeous and this book shows so many it would be hard to choose a favourite. Beautiful to look at – good quality paper – one I will dip into often. I work with textiles and this book is very inspirational – I can see many of the ideas translating to fabric whilst still working in my own style.
As other have said it doesnt go deeply into Angies working methods but if you are a printmaker there is plenty I would say. If you are not a printmaker – buy it anyway – its a truly beautiful book.

I love Angie Lewin’s work and for a birthday present I was treated to a print of her work by my husband. I was delighted to find that there was a book about Angie Lewin and her work.
I bought one for my friend and one for myself and the pottery group I run as we often look at Angie’s work for inspiration when decorating our work. This book is beautifully illustrated showing many pieces of her work and her inspiration for them. It has some of her drawings too and how she has created her prints. It is a delight to dip in and out of. The quality of the paper and the illustrations give you a sense of dipping into her creative world and it inspires me. Amazing book for the price.

This is a seductive book, providing a fascinating insight into the world of a very talented printmaker and artist. The chapters are divided into “coast”, “woodland and hedgerow”, “river and loch”, “meadow and garden” and “studio”. Each chapter opens with some beautiful photography and text detailing the background to the locations for Lewin’s art as well as interesting personal details “..we accidentally found a derelict croft on the side of a hill looking out on to Ben Rinnes and later bought it…..the views are truly wonderful and ever changing”… The illustrations throughout are utterly beautiful, I can happily sit with a cup of coffee and browse through the pages for hours. What is very special is to follow the artist from inspirational pebble, seedhead or wildflower via sensitively rendered, delicate notebook drawings to finely detailed and skillfully produced print or fabric. Completely absorbing and deeply inspirational. Highly recommended.
