The First Graphic Adaptation of the Multi-Million Bestseller

’12th June, 1942: I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.’

In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse.

Aged thirteen when she went into the secret annexe, Anne Frank kept a diary in which she confided her innermost thoughts and feelings, movingly revealing how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with the daily threat of discovery and death.

Adapted by Ari Folman, illustrated by David Polonsky, and authorized by the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel, this is the first graphic edition of the beloved diary of Anne Frank.

‘Faithful to the spirit and often the language of the diary… Mr Polonsky’s beautiful artwork offers a charming and convincing view of Anne on the page’ THE ECONOMIST

‘Folman and Polonsky have reclaimed Anne Frank in all of her humanity, and they allow us to witness for ourselves her beauty, courage, vision and imagination. And, in doing so, they have elevated the tools of the comic book to create an astonishing work of art.’ JEWISH JOURNAL

‘The illustrations [. . .] retell Anne’s diary with great compassion, wit and ebullience’ StANDPOINT

It’s a lovely book, very well made. I read the ebook version first but decided to get the paperback one as well.

I love this book. It is a beautiful adaptation of Anne’s real diary, and while it shortened the diary a little I thought it picked out key parts to include well. The artwork was amazing; I especially liked the depictions of the residents of the annexe sitting down to eat dinner adapted as animals, of Anne’s mother, Peter’s mother and Peter’s father as fire-breathing dragons, the picture of Anne incorporated in “The Scream” by Edvard Munch and the picture of Margot incorporated in Gustav Klimt’s portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. The artist is clearly very skilled. My favourite picture is the one of grown-up Anne reading to younger Anne. I would recommend this book to anyone aged 10+ who loves Anne Frank.

Bought for my 14 yr old brother. Anne Frank is the current subject in his history class so i thought i would buy him this picture book as its more entertaining than a long diary, especially for a teen. But he was really excited to read it, and i may even buy myself it too! Really great quality pictures and the pages are really thick so they wont tear.

Our 10-year daughter is quite historically-aware and somehow has a keen interest in the second world war. In addition, she loves to learn about women that stand out. And she is very much into graphic novels. So this was the perfect Christmas gift. The book is filled with beautiful art and is a spectacular adaptation of the Anne Frank story, that adds another dimension to the narrative. The style and colouring match the late 1903’s and war years. Our daughter already read an Anne Frank biography before so she knew the story and details (and was horrified by it). This graphic novel however it doesn’t not address nor depict the Bergen-Belsen camp part of her way too short life. It is an abbreviated version of the dairy but its captures the essence very well with the artist perfectly rendering some of the Anne’s thoughts and perceptions that she trusted to Kitty, her diary. It is a gripping story about growing up in unusual and grim circumstances, while the humanity shines through though Anne’s wit and grumpiness. The

The book and its stunning art gives gloom impression of Anne’s circumstances, it is a touching visualisation of event and her thoughts, the boredom and despair. You will get cross section part of the secret annexxe “achterhuis” and god explanation fo several events during the war as well. In contrast to many comics there is a fair amount of text, but it is highly readable and a page turner. This is simply very powerful story telling. Very well done.

My 9-year-old son absolutely loves this book. I bought it as he was studying WWII at school and I thought I might con him into reading around the topic by buying the graphic novel given his love for Dog Man – but I wasn’t really expecting much, and wasn’t sure if it might still be a bit old or serious for him. But he read it from cover to cover on day one, has been carrying it round in his school bag and has since read it six more times. He says he loves everything about it, has been talking about all the issues it raises, and has asked his teacher if they can do an Anne Frank week as part of their lessons so he can share it with his friends. Plus it’s beautifully illustrated and really captures the original voice from Anne’s diary (at least as I remember it!). This graphic novel is a work of art and clearly really engaging for kids – makes history come alive! Highly recommended.
