We are not OK…
I’ve been fortunate enough to meet many remarkable people over the last decade of making documentaries – sometimes in incredibly hostile environments, where they’ve been really up against it – and I’ve seen the devastating effect that poverty, trauma, violence, abuse, stigma, stress, prejudice and discrimination can have on people’s mental health. It has always been the common thread.
Every week, 1 in 10 young people in the UK experiences symptoms of a common mental health problem, such as anxiety or depression, and 1 in 5 have considered taking their own life at some point. In this book, Stacey Dooley opens up the conversation about mental health in young people, to challenge the stigma and stereotypes around it.
Working in collaboration with mental health experts and charities, Stacey talks to young people across the UK directly affected by mental health issues, and helps tell their stories responsibly, in order to shine a light on life on the mental health frontline and give a voice to young people throughout the UK who are living with mental health conditions across the spectrum.
As well as hearing about their experiences directly, Stacey speaks to medical experts, counsellors, campaigners and health practitioners who can give detailed insights into the conditions profiled and explore the environmental factors that play a part – including poverty, addiction, identity, pressures of social media and the impact of Covid-19.

Stacey – Do you realise the people who get to go into the mental health wards are actually the lucky ones?
Theres a huge swathe of people in the system that are just given medication that isnt reviewed and doesnt help. Theres zero follow up help. Most people are actually put under the “care” of someone in a GP surgery at this point. Its a joke…..please do a book showing how the mental health service really is.

Struggling from so many of the contents page, almost gave me a blanket of comfort, feeling reassured that I am not in my own. I have struggled with anorexia over the past couple years and honestly from just reading page 61 of the chapter of “eating disorder” has really summed up EXACTLY what it feels like. This book is something that everyone needs to read, mental health is an invasion to so many peoples life’s and Stacey’s pursuit of interest in mental health is outstanding in many ways.

Having both personal and professional experiences of mental illness, I looked forward to reading this book. The writing is very accessible and explanatory, so even if you don’t know anything at all about mental health you won’t be lost along the way. I particularly liked that Stacey covered the lesser known/lesser talked about mental illnesses such as psychosis, post-natal depression and personality disorder, and also touched upon social issues such as poverty, racism and LGBT hate crime and how they contribute to mental health difficulties. I think there is still such a lot of work to be done around mental health, because sadly the stigma and lack of appropriate support services impact so many people living with these problems on a daily basis. Books like this are so very important to open up people’s minds and start the process of understanding each other and our diverse experiences a little better. Recommended

When I first started reading the introduction I was worried that this book was written through rose tinted glasses, but thankfully it wasn’t. Through the cases discussed in the book it does acknowledge the bad state mental health services are in in this country, which I have unfortunately experienced first hand.
