Asia Light: Healthy & Fresh South-East Asian Recipes
£2.90
Asian ingredients are fresh, vibrant and renowned for their health benefits, but Asian recipes often aren’t as healthy as they seem because of their use of lots of sugar, salt, unhealthy oils and fatty cuts of meat.
Asia Light offers nutritious and lower fat ways of cooking classic dishes, such as Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Laksa and Beef Rendang, as well as Ghillie’s own creations, including Steam Baked Salmon and Vegetable Parcels with Asian Dressing and Vietnamese Chocolate Coffee Pots. These recipes are packed with superfood ingredients and have the traditional South East Asian balance of hot, sour, salty and sweet.
With chapters on: Starters; Soups; Salads; Rice & Noodles; Baked, BBQ and One Pot; Stir-fries; Curries; Ices, Coolers, Cocktails & Sweet Treats; plus a bonus Basics section on how to make more healthy versions of South-East Asian pastes and sauces, this is a cookbook that can be used every day and by anybody.

‘Asia Light’ languished on my Amazon wishlist for many months before I finally ordered it. Maybe because the title isn’t as snappy as some, maybe because I had forgotten reading that the author lives in Singapore.
It is a shame I waited so long because this cookbook is very much as described: a collection of “healthy and contemporary [Southeast] Asian recipes”.
Each chapter is illustrated with a quartet of small photographs of market life and street food in Singapore. The food styling is so evocative of the Far East that you can almost reach into the page and grab a forkful! Dishes are charmingly presented on delicately patterned china bowls and platters, alongside coordinating spoons or chopsticks.

A loving this new book from Ghillie James, so far I have made the Nonya Rice Salad, Roasted Pumpkin with Rocket & Lemon Miso Dressing and Crispy Seaweed all of which have been completely delicious! This is a really lovely new book with some interesting and unusual recipes with mouth-watering photographs along side. I thoroughly recommend it.

Wow, Ghillie has written another highly informative and slightly ‘different’ recipe book. I always avoided cooking asian food as it was laden with salt and fat, but this book explodes the myth that these two ‘baddies’ are needed to make a really delicious meal. The recipes are clear and easy and I highly recommend this beautiful and clever book.

Amazing recipes, particularly the curries and cashew stir fry.

Not just refreshingly healthy and tasty recipes, but also blissfully straightforward to create and you don’t need a cupboard full of random hard-to-find spices. I’d always put cooking anything other than a stir fry in the ‘too much faff’ box, being put off by recipes’ endless list of ingredients and time factor, but now no excuses – and I’m relishing the delicious results! Great for both daily eating and dinners to make an impression, plus I love the fact the recipes are inspired by the full spectrum of Asia, not just one country. The photography and graphic design also deserve five stars – simply beautiful.

Fantastic cook book. Packed full of delicious recipes invariably well under 500 calories a go, most between 200-300. Despite being low cal/fat, because of all the fantastic Asian flavour, you don’t feel like you’re missing out like you do when following other healthy diets and having cooked a number of recipes for friends and family now, everyone has raved about the dishes – the red snapper was to die for!! Ghillie James is clearly very down to earth and suggests staples for your larder but you don’t end up with hundreds of strange ingredients you’ll only use once and then sit there wasting away. A quick trip to the supermarket and you can stock up on fish sauce and the like and you’ll find yourself using the ingredients all the time. I always avoided cooking Asian food in the past because I thought it was rather complicated but I was SO wrong and cooking everything from fresh ingredients is incredibly satisfying, not to mention lovely knowing what you’re actually putting into your body. Beautifully written and delightfully satisfying, I can’t recommend this book more highly!
